  • This video is doubly SHOCKING this time quite literally as I'm restoring the front forks to factory condition. But before you watch the video please check out my Patreon page link below.

So in todays episode I'm pulling apart, fully restoring and rebuilding the Showa front forks for the CR250R. The first job is to separate the shocks into there component form, to do this I need to loosen but not remove the rebound adjuster from the base and then take the top cap off the fork tube so that i can drain all the oil out, there is a drain on the fork leg but as the shock is coming apart its quicker to to just drain it through the top.
When all of the oil has been removed I can then fully remove the rebound adjuster and that allows me to remove the spring and damper assembly from the fork tube and slider. As long as the spring is in good condition and isn't shorter than what Honda specifies then there is no need to pull the assembly apart.
To separate the fork tube from the slider first I need to remove the dust seal it chaps out very easily, then to remove the oil seal I need to remove the locking ring and then use the fork tube as its own slide hammer to drive the seal from the slider body and with that disassembly is pretty much complete.
To restore the forks the sliders were blasted, filed, sanded and then vapor blasted some more to restore the natural satin alloy finish. The rest of the components were given a thorough inspection and cleaning before being re-used and of course all new bushings and O-rings were used throughout the assembly phase.
So I hope you enjoyed this episode and ill see you all again very soon,
    Enjoy

@@robertriesshozerlover4 You'd be forgiven for thinking that as from the 90's onwards it was red and white all the way but in the 80's Honda was all about the blue highlights. Haha dont worry its only that clean as its brand new at the moment just wait until a little later in the series i can guarantee it will be all oily and beaten up haha. Nice to hear from you again :)

It takes some serious confidence in your knowledge and skill to be able to carry off some of this work, for instance laying into those fork sliders with a file, but the results speak for themselves. Outstanding.

Thank you, glad you enjoy my work :) Haha yeah I should have said in the video as a warning incase anyone thinks its easy but if your not competent with file don't go anywhere near your fork sliders.. your gonna have a bad time! haha

Loving the file action. I can remember being taught how to file with a roll action in Metalwork Class at Secondary school. Back in the day we were taught everything from how to mark out and scribe, how to draw and read Technical drawings how to use hand tools and then if you were good enough, move onto Lathe work and milling. I feel that so much has been lost in this "digital" age.
Keep up the good work Bud.

I've raced with Honda Cr's from 1985 to 1993 (then switched to Suzuki and Kawa) and this was one of the best looking bike ever. You are doing a fantastic job. Can't wait to see it finished. A lot of good time with this bike. Love to see you are keeping her stock. I'm curious to see the engine video. Keep an eye to the water pump assembly because it was usually a mess of corrosion after a few years if the owner used the wrong coolant or worse only water. Usually the pump cover is carved by corrosion so keep an eye.

Little trick if your fork tube takes more then 3 cracks to break free then heat up the outside tube a bit to help loosen up the bushing thats being stubborn it works everytime and with bushing that aren't in bad shape you can then reuse them, banging then a lot of times and hard can damage the ends of the bushings.

Seeing you crank down on the vise holding the fork tube with only a rag between it and those serrated jaws really made me wince. You're guaranteed to have deformation in the tube while holding a round tube with flat jaws. A machined 2 piece fork tube clamp in the vise is the correct tool for holding fork stanchion tubes. The diameter in the tooling insures even clamping pressure across the whole diameter of the tube.

Fantastic work as always! Small tech tip. I would always lose sin, not remove, all the nuts and bolts on the fork to while it was still installed on the bike. Much easier than then when it’s in the vice. Sometimes if somebody has worked on the bike before you and over tighten these things it can be a problem. Fantastic channel. You make the rest of us look like amateurs😁👍

Hi …… another great methodical restoration 👍
When it comes to dressing the forks or any other gouged ferrous & non-ferrous metals you should try dressing the gouges with a small ball-pein hammer, this retains some of the original metal by dressing it back into the gouge then draw filing to finish, I use these methods on my vintage air rifle restorations, it works especially well on Chewed up slotted screw heads just leaving you to redress the slot, keep up the fantastic work with the videos 👍
