  • Welcome to another episode of the 1986 Honda CR250R restoration project. This time it the wheels that are in the spotlight for restoration so sit back , relax and enjoy, But first,

    So what's involved in a wheel restoration? Well in this case way back in episode 3 I stripped these wheels down and sent the rims and hubs out for replating as they were scratched, corroded, peeling and generally beaten up from years at the track. While they were at the platers i ordered all the parts I would need to rebuild them
    stainless steel spokes and nipples
    Inner tubes
    rim bands
    rim locks
    new tyres
    Then when they arrived back it was simply a case of putting all of those items together, so first up was the lacing of the wheel, each wheel has different spokes and angles and a particular order of assembly so its important that you know what you are doing because if you don't you'll get the the 36th spoke and it wont fit and you'll have to start all over again and risk damaging your nicely plated wheels so beware.
    After the lacing process its time to true the wheel as the rim is never perfect from the factory as you can see from the amount of run out in the video. To true the rim it involves finding the high and low spots and evening them out using the inner and outer spokes to pull the rim one way or the other and its the same for the vertical run out. Once true to within 2mm or less the nipples were torqued up and then it was time to fir the tyres.
    If you are watching and reading this then I'm sure I don't need to explain tyre and tube fitting as it would just bore you but if you are new to all of this watch the video its pretty self explanatory
    After all of that it was simply a case of fitting the sprocket and brake disc and then getting set up for the next episode teaser.
    So I hope you enjoyed this episode and ill see you all again very soon,
    Enjoy
    RRC

    Superb work. There’s something so satisfying about watching someone who knows what they’re doing just get on with it. No American sensationalisation because they changed an oil filter, just work done properly. Looking forward to more!

    An absolute pleasure watching you work. I've worked as a tire changer in an automotive garage, and I've been changing dirt bike tires with tire irons and blade screw drivers since I was a boy but I've never seen a dirt bike tire changed on a turn table, very slick. Looking forward to seeing the completion of the bike, the perfect year and model in my opinion! Cheers lad!

    Good tip coming from a Honda motorcycle mechanic, when installing the wheelspacers into the oil seals, try to push as much grease you can between the wheelbearing and oil seal. Keeps the seals well lubricated so they last way longer and don’t tend to wear out as much, which would mean that dirt and debris can get behind the seal. But as always love the video’s, your workspirit, quality jobs!! Keep up the good work!

  • @EliteRock

    Deeply satisfying, as always! I've built and trued a few bike wheels (pedal and motor) over the years, I always used a marker or 'sharpie' (whiteboard or permanent) to highlight runout, it makes it so easy (erase the mark instantly with a swipe of a wet finger or cloth). Got to the point I could get off a pedal bike, sit it upside-down and true a wheel perfectly in minutes without even letting the tyres down (assuming I had the spoke key and marker with me). Of all mechanicing jobs, I found it to be one of the most satsifying.

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice tip, i think I'll try that next time as I'm always terrified of scratching the rim with the pointer. It is a very satisfying job when you know what you're doing :)

    • @EliteRock
      @EliteRock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RRCRestoration If you hold the marker in your hand (with your palm braced against the jig, bike frame, whatever), the give in your fingers means get a mark that varies from barely visible to a thick line. I guess you could solidly mount it, but this way you end up with longer sequences of spokes to tweak precisely indicated around the the entire circumference as the mark fades in and out. I'm actually surprised it isn't the way everyone does it!
