I'm so glad I'm not the only one that does this! My family thinks that I am crazy, but little pieces and stings make my heart sing. Thanks for the video!
I love it. Years ago, when simply quilts was on TV, they had a guest who took all of her little bits, spread and sprinkled them all over a piece of fabric, covered it with a water soluble sheet, then free motion quilted all over it, dipped it in water, the soluble disappeared and exposed everything. She said the same thing as you, lol, making fabric ❤ they also do the same thing but, instead of the soluble, they put tulle over it. It stayed like that. If I remember correctly, I believe that one was framed and hung on the wall ❤ Thank you for sharing yours. I love the striped look ~ Robyn
You are so welcome! Oh my goodness do I miss Simply Quilts! I remember watching this when my kids were little. I would set up an activity station for them while it was on. 😀 I learned so much from that show! That is a wonderful way to use up threads, scraps, etc. I have used this method before as well, but it has been awhile. Thanks for the reminder and sharing!
where have you been all of my life! I have made quilts for 40 years and have learned more from you in a few weeks than I learned in all of those years. You make everything so easy. Other channels start talking and I go blank. they make things so difficult. thank you for having such a wonderful channel.
Oh my goodness! Thank you SO much! I am thrilled this has helped you! This comment has made my day! I am a former high school teacher. I miss being in the classroom, but I am also thrilled that I get to teach quilting online on this wonderful platform. 🥰
I save everything, I keep crumbs, and I do love crumb quilts, strip quilts. I love, love, love what you've done with these scraps. I have a suggestion if you and your quilty friends here want to try something, and not worry about fraying. Place a piece of tulle over the blocks and quilt over that. It makes it fun to save threads if you're freeing up a bobbins or have a bunch of trimmed threads after long arming projects, add ribbons, thin strips of fabric, and silk flowers (like rose petals for weddings), to the fusible, place tulle over and quilt it. It's fun, it's fresh and the sky's the limit on what can be created. Love your videos.
100 years from now. . . Someone will pick up your table topper and wonder. . Were they poor? Not much fabric? thrifty ? OR super creative❤ love tiny bits of fabric. Great idea
Nah they’ll be like “this handmade work of art would have been placed on a table or other flat surface as a casual 24/7 nonsubscription color moment for the house. I know it sounds crazy, but these colors are not stimulated by your implants. This is made with real dyed cotton! Back when people didn’t work for AI overlords, they used to have “hobbies” and “make things” for “fun”. This magnificent piece is a testament to human ingenuity.”
I'm going to be totally honest here. I love a scrappy quilt! I love the whole process of making odd colors of all sorts of fabrics & weights come together to make a beautiful quilt. With that being said, I just don't have enough time in my days of sewing to justify using these tiny straps of fabric to essentially make pieces of fabric. However, I just want to say Kudo's to you for doing what you obviously love to do! Your blocks & finished pieces are beautiful & eye - catching worthy of your time & effort! So nice to see you enjoy the process! Thank you for sharing.
I completely understand this! I usually toss these tiny scraps too, but one day I was just wondering what I could make with them. I am so thrilled with the results! I am not sure I will always save the trimmings, but when I see colors that go together like these did, I will probably think twice about tossing them now. 😀 So glad you enjoyed this video! Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts on this.
I love this! I am not a quilter, but I sew all kinds of things. What a great way to keep micro-scraps out of landfills and the result of your work is delightful!
You converted me! I was totally skeptical when the video began and I actually said out loud to throw those scraps away. I’ll definitely be trying this now!
I love how that turned out. I'm wanting to do something similar with my little triangle cutouts from sew and flips. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
I so loved all the things you made. I'm going to do the same. I especially loved the pillow, it goes so well with quilt. It really adds to it. I especially love how thrilled and happy you are with what you came up with ❤. Just like our precious Creator. He makes something so lovely out of what others discard... and He too is just as pleased and joyful. How lovely to discover the Father's heart.
Your enthusiasm is so infectious! I have a box of flannel scaps left from a Duckworth quilt I made from a friend's flannel shirts (he passed away) and I will make a pillow or two to go with it! Thanks for the inspiration!
Wow! A fun new project I have not ever heard of! I have heard of string and crumb piecing. I have never heard someone save and use those tiny shaved strips! And how fun and beautiful! Well done! Great new idea!
Thank you Thank you thank you!!! I also keep the little scraps and have been looking for a tutorial but everyone uses the bigger pieces. Those blocks are so cute. I have been making baby quilts and have a ton of scraps and now I will make a new one using your method. 🎉😊
I love all of the scrappy projects! im a scrappy girl too. They make me so happy- especially love the table topper but the pillow is adorable too. Great job thanks for sharing this.
This looks so much fun. I have kept all my micro scrap/strips for awhile. So I will have a nice assortment of fabrics to choose from. Currently have a bunch of batik micro scraps. Fun in my future with this for sure! Thank you so much for this idea.
Awesome video! I have a bag of scraps like that too! I love that you were honest about the mug rug/coaster so that we can keep those issues in mind if we plan to make these!
I absolutely love this!!! I'm digging through my big ole FULL paper sack of trims to try to make one of these today! AMAZING how nice yours turned out!!!
Loved loved this entire video, thank you! Your happy attitude is infectious, lol. Can’t wait to start saving all those micro scraps that I’ve been throwing away.
Usually I cut these into tiny pieces which I use to fill in puppets or pillows mixed with fluffy stuff ... But your project is much nicer 😊, thanks for sharing ❤
LOVE this! I'm a new quilter and have been saving those little scraps from a quilt I'm making. I can't wait to make matching 'fabric' from these scraps - that might even land in the quilt. Thanks for sharing!!🥰
Always have fabric post cards Hand Stamped/Cancelled at the counter. Or better yet enclose in a clear envelope/pouch. Getting the address legible drove me crazy until i just used adhesive blank labels with block print writing. My hand stitched letters & numbers were atrocious....lol
These would make some great pet quilts or even fabric pet toys for pets of all sizes. And if you don’t have a pet of your own, I bet your local animal charity would love these as super snuggly gifts that don’t show up dirt & stains too easily but have fun mouth texture
I love this idea Kris. Your table topper and pillow look lovely. It looks great fun. There are times when I want to be at my machine but I don't want a challenge. Just sit and sew. This would be a perfect thing to do. Like doodling while your talking on the phone, this would be a fun thing to do at sewing guild days while chatting with my friends.
How neat ! Been cutting up strips since yesterday. Going to try it out tonight. Looks like fun. Many thanks. I liked the pillow the way it matched the quilt colors.
I love this, and your energy! I have a bag of strips so I am on my way to give this a go. I made a pin cushion years ago with selvages. You are so much fun and delightful!

😮 I was blown away how BEAUTIFUL the little table topper looked! Wowzie!!! So cute! I’m so doing that! First time to watch your video and I’m subscribing!❤
Well, I must confess 😬. I have always thrown away those types of strips. I just watched your video tutorial on what to do with them 🤔. I was so amazed and fell in love with the outcome. These would be so fun to join with a cover stitch on a serger. The cover and chain stitches would add to the design and even bring a bit of cohesion to all of the colors. I love your idea! On the bigger “block” it might be neat to do a couple directions on the same project batting.
Wonderful ideas! Thank you so much! Love it!
Thank you for this tutorial ❤

I love the name micro scraps. I use mine for making fabric postcards. Many times I’ve gone back into my trash can and pulled out scrap bits to play with. I don’t save everything, just what looks fun to me. Otherwise I’d be drowning in fabric bits.
