You guys don’t need to pin and actually it doesn’t help the fabric lay flat. I use glue or that wonder tape. Super simple don’t need to spend time taking pins out as you’re sewing it’s so fast I found a similar type of wonder tape at Joann fabric and it works just as well. And I got a lot more for a dollar the wonder tape brand is a little bit more pricey
@@dcwatashiThat stuff is spendy and has issues of its own! I love my love my yellow-head pins, 500 pack! You should see the ladies at the shop flip.over my nice crisp intersections on my *heavy-fabric, with everything from cordouroy to sateen finishes, damask, upholstery, etc, 1199+ separate squares* --- that stuff goes walking no matter how you hold it! Yes, perhaps basic cotton holds itself in place almost perfectly, but most other fabrics have other ideas. Longer pins enable you to pin without buckling the fabric, and also assist in stress-free "taking up" of excess length, since you sit and split the difference with pins until you like the distribution, then as you sew you can relax just trust that you placed the pins well, and enjoy your beautiful seam!
Thank you for not being "ashamed" to be pinning your pieces, but also teaching how to pin. I have been having trouble with smaller piecing and learned from Just get it Done quilts to think of each piece as having a beginning, a middle and an end. If i do that AND use pins it comes out so much better. And unlike almost every quilt tutorial on TH-cam you promote pinning, like its a necessity, not like its a newbie thing to grow out of. and do not let anyone see you doing it if you do.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment-it is so sweet and truly made my heart happy! I love that you've found a technique that works for you, combining what you've learned from Just Get It Done Quilts, too! It's such a great mindset to think of each piece as having a beginning, middle, and end-what a fantastic way to look at it! In my opinion, pinning is such an invaluable tool, no matter your experience level, and I'm so glad you feel encouraged by my approach. It’s definitely not something to be "ashamed" of; it’s a skill that can make all the difference in the final result. I’m thrilled to hear that using pins has helped your smaller piecing come together so beautifully. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you for taking the time to share this with me-it means so much! ❤️
Hi Chris. I just watched this video today, 9.2.23 because I have a tub of 5" squares to make donation quilts. I've tried just sewing them randomly together and it isn't appealing to me. Your special block really makes the block look awesome. I watch all of the videos you post and really enjoy them. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Thank you so much! This makes my heart so happy! 🥰 i am sorry the block isn't working for you. 😔 Maybe try just one or two colors from your scraps? Let me know if I can help you with this.
I was thinking fussy cut fabric for the middle, applique works, too! Thinking I might start a leaders and enders with Christmas fabrics for a quilt like this -- or several!! I've got a LOT of Christmas fabric!! LOL!! Thank you for sharing!
I’m a first time viewer to your channel and am now one of your newest followers! If the rest of your videos are anything like this one I’ll be a follower for life….👍🏻💖👵🏻
Silly question. Where did you get that clever sign in your studio "PARKING FOR QUILTERS ONLY.....VIOLATORS ....PRESSED TO THE DARK SIDE." I love your channel. Fun to watch.
Oh thank you! I am still learning, but I am so much better than I was when I started. Now to get that lighting right. I find that to be the most difficult aspect to recording videos like this.
@@SewtheDistance when I was in college for post production I remember our instructor saying something like it doesn’t even matter what the subject matter is as long as you have good lighting and good audio. Do you have an external monitor hooked up so you can see in real time what you’re filming? Yes lighting is very tricky. Or you’ll have to upgrade to a pro consumer camera but that takes a little bit of a learning curve and then you would have to learn some video editing software.
Thankyou thankyou Kris for this video. Your object might have been to show us how to do the scrappy quilt block and yes, I really enjoyed this but what I valued most was the lesson on how to square up your block. I was given a whole bunch of blocks made by different people and asked to sew them together. My mind went blank because all the squares were, well, not uniform in their square and I didn't know where to start. Especially too because I had cut and made some blocks to go with it too. Mine all matched, other blocks matched each other but nothing was uniform. Now I can fix it all up. Finally, I know what I am doing!!!!!!! Thank you.
As an experienced quilter, i appreciate that you move along and don't waste time demonstrating sewing and pressing EVERY seam. The instructions and demo as still clear! It saves time so i can watch more of your videos (:
Thank you so much! I really try my best to streamline it, although sometimes I still get hung up on recording those details. 😀 I am always asking myself, "Is this something the viewer needs to know?" You are so sweet! So happy you love my content! ❤️
I discovered you during the 12 days of Christmas quilts. Have enjoyed and learned so many things watching your videos this last year. I enjoy your teaching examples and enthusiasm for quilting. Thanks
I absolutely loved them! Perfected for our end of year bunches & bunches of scraps. I do have to add I love the older quilts. I have 5 right now I punched from an older sweet woman.. She just didn’t want them any longer😢 I felt I had to rescue them!!! 😊
I built this quilt block using a scrappy look, though a bit planned. I alternated a dark blue on the four corners with red. I did not put sashing between. Lots of matching. But did border it for ease in binding.
I just found your channel today!! I have a lot of scraps and this block will be perfect to use them up!! (or, at least some of them) I love your teaching style and your bubbly personality.
Love this idea! I think I’ll use full sized jelly roll strips and cut them down into 2 patches and just toss ‘em in a basket until I have a whole pile to make into a quilt (putting the 2 patches randomly all over the quilt so it doesn’t get matchy-matchy). Thanks for sharing!
I cut my own 5 inch squares and assembled them in sets as you demonstrated for the first method. I set them with a deep royal blue in a different way. Was really happy with results and gifted it to our nephew who just graduated from college. He was thrilled! Thanks so much Kris; all of your blocks are lovely. I will definitely be making this quilt as I adore scrappy quilts!
Could you do with 5 inch squares on the outside of center block using in larger inside square, I know it would be double the size, to make less cutting and sewing.

Yes, my BIG quilt is still waiting for me 😂 am I procrastinating on that project maybe??? Thanks Kris.
I am doing this very pattern, with each square representing each quilt I have made! Can't wait to get back in my sewing room to start assemble. Have no idea how many squares I have!
