How to Capture Creative Sparks of Inspiration for Abstract Paintings
Ever feel a spark of creative inspiration but struggle to turn it into a painting? In this art demo, I explore how to capture those fleeting ideas and transform them into an engaging abstract painting. Whether it’s a color, texture, or a pattern that catches your eye, the key is to act on that inspiration before it fades.
In this video, I take you through my painting process, starting with a test piece inspired by ornate cobblestone streets. The interplay of shapes and colors reminds me of weathered art, like aged mosaic tiles or faded stained glass. Using acrylic paint in Prussian Blue, Naples Yellow, Titanium White, and Mars Black, I let the layers build up, creating a rich, textured surface. Then, I sketch loose, curved diamond shapes with charcoal to enhance the composition.

    • @chrisloudart

Hey Teresina! I gesso my canvases, but typically don't gesso the paper in my sketchbooks. If I'm painting on a loose sheet of paper, I will sometimes apply a thin layer of gesso. The paper in this particular video is mixed media paper (98 lb, 160 gsm), but I also like to use watercolor paper (140 lb, 300 gsm). I hope that helps!

I know your inspiration was cobble stones, but Its like a fishing net floating on the surface of the water, you can feel it bobbing around in the water. Periodically the salmon from the fish farm near where I live, escape the confines of the cages. And I was inspired to do a painting based on one of those escapes. I had fish breaking out through the net and swimming for freedom. I used as a stencil, one of those net bags that we get our oranges in, I made some of the hole bigger then after the stencil area dried I painted in the fish. It came out pretty good, and was a lot of fun to do. As always Chris thank you for the video and the inspiration, make your week and awesome week. Cheers!

I hadn't thought of a net! That’s such a great visual-fish breaking free, dodging the net, heading for open water! I can totally picture the movement and energy in your piece. And using an orange bag as a stencil? Love it. I collect those netted bags as well for stencils and collage. Thanks Mhairie! I hope you have a wonderful week as well! Cheers!

@chrisloudart well, I'm glad I passed that on, mind you my salmon probably don't really look like salmon, but the thought was there and the imagination can do the rest. 😆😆. I shall endeavour to make my week memorable! Thank you Chris. Cheers!

This is an excellent idea. Especially the idea of it being in a totally different medium. It helps to free up any inhibitions of it having to look like and be like a finished product. And for me it helps break through the inertia of having to set up my paints which I usually have lots of clutter in the way of accessing. So I love your idea.❤🎉

Thanks so much, Garnet! Yes-sometimes the best way to loosen up is to switch things up completely-glad this approach works for you!

Another great video that’s given me inspiration to try out these techniques in a piece of my own. The two paintings you produced definitely have the feel of seascapes - either the shore of a mainland or even an island. When I do these kind of exercises, I’m somehow drawn to seeing figures or faces or animals (pareidolia) but I think I ought to broaden my scope a little and think outside of the box in terms of landscapes or botanicals. Keep up with the great content, Chris.

Thanks so much, Tom! I hadn't seen these as seascapes before, but I can totally see what you mean.
