❤❤❤Excelente!! Gracias, Interesante técnica en acrílico. 🥰🇨🇱🙏🏻🙌🏻🕊💙🌍👏👏👏
Great video, great teacher! So many ways to use these skins! Thank you!!🐟🐟🐟
Thank you so much-glad you enjoyed this!
Pls more like this! You are a GOOD art tutor. I taught 16 - 19 year olds Literature, Grammar, and Composition for 25 yrs. Art was always going to be my retirement gift to myself : thx for so much 4 dendritic neuron firing you give me
I really appreciate your kind words! It’s fantastic to know that the videos are inspiring you. Art as a retirement gift sounds perfect-keep those creative neurons firing!
Thank you for your inspiring lesson on abstract painting.
I'm so happy you liked it and found it inspiring, Janet!❤️
Nice details on fins and fish ! 👍👍👌
Thank you!😊
That is such a great and innovative, creative way to use up stuff that would otherwise just go straight into landfill. And those fish are really lovely. You could make some wonderful baby mobiles to hang in a childs nursery using this amazing technique. Thankyou for sharing.
Thanks so much, TC! I love the idea of using these for a mobile!❤️
I make skins by mixing acrylics with pouring medium and house paint and then pour it out onto either silicone mats or ceramic tiles. It’s basically just a regular acrylic pour but with the intention to peel it off and use it as a skin. I like adding the layer of house paint underneath the main colours (use it as a liquid pillow) because it makes the skins thick and leathery, and I have been thinking about using them with other textiles to create something but haven’t got around to it yet. I also put them in collages and make jewelry from them.
That sounds like a fantastic method for making acrylic skins! I love the idea of using house paint as a base to create a thicker, leathery texture. Do you use any particular type or color of house paint? I've seen a few jewelry pieces made with skins which were incredible! I'd love to see what you come up with when you start using them with other textiles! Cheers!
Thanks for the tip silicone surface, , this is v. new using skins ,great idea , Chris’ fish were excellent with a few
pen touch ups, really enjoyed the video, really learning a lot I never learned in art class , 👍👍🙏🙏🌎🎨🎨
Oh crap!… I wanna try this so I can add if in with my abstract photography! Thank you for this
That's a great idea! I hope they work out well for you!
I am SO HOOKED ( pun intended) on using acrylic skins! I’ve done 2 paintings with it.
I also have incorporated using cardboard. Showing how to get to the corrugated part was so helpful in one of your videos.
I'm so happy to hear that, Katy! Aren't they fun?
This is exciting!!! Thank you!
Thanks, Molly!😊
I’m grateful I happened upon your tutorial “10-min abstract artwork…”; you make it all comprehensible and approachable and fun. I was close to committing “abstract-art suicide” (I.e to giving up trying to transition to it from decades of painting representational watercolors). You’ve given me a new lease on artistic license🎉
Hey Elizabeth! I’m really happy you found the 10-minute tutorial helpful! Transitioning from representational to abstract can be tough, but your experience with watercolors will bring a beautiful depth to your new creations. You got this!
I just use the grease proof paper for my pallet its pretty cheap I get it in the supermarket. Yeah acrylic skins are fun to use, they make great rocks and mountains in landscapes. Thanks Chris for sharing as always it's been very interesting watching your process. Cheers!
Greaseproof paper is such a great option for a palette! I'd probably be using that all the time had I known about it before buying these palettes. Acrylic skins really do add amazing texture to landscapes. Cheers!
@@chrisloudart yes they do! Hills and vegitation with almost no effort😊 Grease proof paper is great, I've used it since I was a child, there wasn't enough finances to go around to get fancy pallets (at ages 5 and 6, I thought they were fancy) so mum would tear off a bit of grease proof paper and well it works. Have you ever thought of making acrylic skins on glass or plexiglass? You could make a really huge one, and make larger things with them. Loved the look of the fish, and you've inspired me to try something with fish, I've done a lot of fishy paintings weird ones and a little more realistic, I can add extra depth doing it your way, thank you for being inspiring. And thank you once again for the videos. Cheers!
That's such a wonderful memory-I used greaseproof paper yesterday and really does the trick! It's nice that not only can you get thick skins, but you can get really thin skins which is difficult with a palette. I've never tried making acrylic skins on glass or plexiglass but I like the idea for creating larger pieces. Cheers!
@@chrisloudart yes it is a nice memory, and I'm still using grease proof paper, hey if it's not broken why fix it! Mum thinks she's not artistic, but I keep reminding her that she's a Weaver and that's her art form, and mum forgets that she's the one who taught me how to draw, and I remind her of that too, art doesn't require paints and brushes. Anytime we wanted to know how to do something mum would go to the library and get the required books out study some of it then teach us how to do it. She did the same when I was learning how to play a guitar my grandparents got me for Christmas, mum did her homework then taught me what she'd learnt, very resourceful. There are arty people in my family tree, my great great great great etc grandfather was a master potter in Scotland and there's some of his work in the Rutherglen/Glasgow museum, I'm hoping something arty dribbled down the family tree to me 😊😄. Its probably a good thing that mum was involved with our education, we went to a small one teacher primary school in the country, and because the area was considered as a non important bush school there wasn't a lot of teaching resources. At 4yrs old and in kindergarten I use to get into trouble a lot because I was upset at having to read the kindergarten school readers. My parents had us reading early, and its always helpful having siblings who help as well, so I was reading and understanding what was written in the books that the 6th graders were reading and beyond, I thought the books were baby books😄😄😄. I loved reading and still do and as a child I was very sick and missed a lot of school, so reading, drawing, and playing my guitar was my thing especially if I was hospitalised. Oh dear! I've just realised I've been waffling! Well, as always thank you for the videos and the inspiration. Cheers!
It sounds like your mum was an incredible teacher and resourceful in so many ways-she's definitely artistic in her own right. It's amazing to hear about your family's artistic legacy and how those creative influences shaped you. Thank you for sharing these wonderful memories, and I'm so glad my videos can be a part of your creative inspiration. Cheers!
I love this! I hate wasting my paint what a great idea!
Thanks so much, Sue!
What a great idea! Thanks 😊
Thanks so much, Jodi!
Always tell my pour painting buddies/students to put down some parchment or wax paper under their pour paintings to collect overflow paints. Put them away for a week or so and you have splendid pieces for glass jars, wood boxes, window stickers, jewelry, and much more. Great video Chris - now new subscriber.
Thank you so much! That is an excellent idea not only for pour painting, but for those of us who tend to be messy painters (including myself here.) Love that suggestion!
Wow! Inspirational video, thank you so much. My art studio is in construction in my garden and I am bursting with excitement to have the space and time to try this out on my art! 🖼️ ❤🎉
Thank you so much! I'm excited for you! 😊
I call them paint chips. I scrape them from my palettes and I save them in a giant fishbowl. I never thought to use them in my art! cool idea!
Thanks, Toni! I've seen people make cool jewelry with them as well.
@@chrisloudart mind officially blown now! lol
😂
I love these ideas!,, Thank you so much! I don’t know what else you do - but I subscribed, so I’ll be watching more!
Thanks so much, Barbara! Welcome!
Thankyou! Great video i never knew about this. I threw out a whole heap of skins that peeled off paint tin lids today 😭 lol i wish i watched your video first. ❤
I’m so glad you found it helpful! It’s a shame about those skins, but hey, at least you know what to do with the next batch. 😉
Super cool! Love the fish! thanks for sharing your techniques!
Thanks, Madison! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this, it's great! Now I don't need to stress so much about wasting paint. Love the ways you use it, great looking fish!
Thanks, Christie! It's great to hear how useful this is.😊
Just found you and subscribed….you have some great videos - thanks for sharing
Thank you so much, Stef-and welcome!😊
Great video! I keep all my tape pulls that created my sharp boarders and they are fun to use!
Thanks, Debbie! Great idea! I think I've only done that one time, but had good results with it. How do you store your tape pulls?
@@chrisloudart I layer them on plastic cutting boards. I’ve had good results if the tape overlaps without the layers of paint coming off.
@@chrisloudart the cutting boards stack in my art bin for storage
@Debbiegibb Love that idea!
I love using them in my art journals. I have shown videos on this a few years ago! Great fun!
Aren't they so fun to play with? I've started incorporating some in larger canvas paintings, but so far they've been much more effective in my sketchbooks.😊
For what I'm doing you and AB Creative are my most inspiring and go to .. thank You
I'm so glad to hear that, Kate!❤️ I'm not familiar with AB Creative-I'll go check them out.
Thanks for all these wonderful tips
Thanks, Theresa! I'm happy you enjoyed them. 😊
Great video! Answered so many questions I’ve had about acrylic skins. Many thanks!
@@1510Susan Thank you, Susan! I'm so glad to hear that 😊
I just found out that you can get acrylic skins off of surfaces by soaking it in water for the ones that dont want to come off easily. Great video, Chris!
Thanks, Carrie! I've never tried that but I will have to give it a go. Thanks for the tip!👍
You should write a children’s story and use that technique to do the illustrations. Love the look! It has a spontaneous appeal.
That’s a great idea!👍 I might have to give that a try!
Waouh 😮😮😮😮 fabuleux ❤❤❤❤ merci merci Chris ❤❤❤❤
Merci beaucoup Martine !❤️🐟
That’s a great idea, I can’t wait to have a try at this, thank you.
@@vivienbarton7912 Thank, Vivien! I'm excited for you to try it!😊
I just love how creative this is
Thanks so much, Maria! 😊
11.24 Switching to acrylic from watercolors is dicey business for me ; ) The Skins are marvelous and make me encouraged to Try. Your work with cardboard is intriguing, too.
Thanks, Diane! Switching from watercolors to acrylics can definitely be a challenge at first. To ease the transition, try adding a bit of water to your acrylics-this will make them behave more like watercolors and help you get more comfortable with the new medium.
@ I'm making Skins today : ) Yes....thining the paint helps...but I'm timid ; )
@dianesharp1886 Nice-you got this!
I've been cutting out underwater and landscape scenes using textiles and stitching. So many froms of cutouts can B some beautiful wall hanging art. Skins also as backgrounds used as displayed art decorations with solid color peels for a 3d look behind glass...as under the glass of a table. Ann
That sounds incredibly creative, Ann! I love the idea of using textiles and acrylic skins to create such unique and beautiful wall art pieces. -Chris
Cannot WAIT to try this, thx!
It's so much fun and quite addicting!
Super cool fish! I used to pull the paint out of the sphere shaped wells and saved them for abstract pieces. I never would have thought to cut out shapes from the flattened skins. I used to peel those off too. It's so satisfying haha.
Thank you! I agree, I could spend hours peeling paint 😂
Thanks for this video. I’ve always been curious and you answered it. Love your videos🇨🇦
Thanks so much, Helene! Glad it was helpful 😊
So happy to find your channel! Great source of inspiration, including the comments. Until I saw you, I thought I was the only person to create entirely with acrylic skins... I use 4ml polyethylene drop cloth for mine, I cover my table with it and mix right on the table. Peels off really easily. If the paint is not thick enough yet, but I like the look of an area and want to use it, I put a thick coat of gel medium on top. I call mine "paperless collage."
Thanks so much, Leslie! "Paperless collage" is a perfect name-love it! What an innovative process with the drop cloth and the gel medium!!! I'd never thought of either.❤️
This is so cool! Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks, Debbie!😊
Love this video, Chris!! 😍🫠Thank you! If you ever wanted to do more vids w/skins, I wouldn’t be mad about it. 😂 I love your style!
I second that!
Thank you so much, Gina!❤️ I can guarantee there will be more videos with skins. I love using them 👍😊
Thanks, Lena! More will be coming...
Found this video really useful. Thank you for explaining it step by step.
Another thing for me to have a play with. 😊
Thank you! I think you'll have a great time playing with acrylic skins. Using these can get quite addictive.😊
Wow!!! Love these
Thank you so much!

Hi I just found your channel. What a great experience, watching your video. Thank you for the content.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoy them 😊
I like it as its own piece of art
I agree! I have many that I peel off that I think would look good fixed to a canvas as is.😊
Dang it!! You made me late for work again!! 😂
Fantastic video Chris - learned a lot! THank you thank you thank you

Thanks so much, Kate!
Great video! Very useful tips. I've gotten some great peels from the brayer I use for gelli prints. As always, thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, Marte! Do you peel them from the brayer or use the brayer to roll out the skins on another surface?
@@chrisloudart I peel the built up layers of paint from the brayer. I'm not always successful but when I am it's great. I also use a smooth glass cutting board as a palette sometimes and I can get peels from that as well. Thanks for the tip as to how to store them.
Peeling those layers can be so satisfying, and using a glass cutting board is a great idea. Glad the storage tip helped!
Great timing thanks Chris! I've been thinking last few days about how I can make/use acrylic skins. I use parchment paper with a diy wet palette, but I also have the silicone coated baking paper mostly used in the uk, I read somewhere that they peel off easily.. I'll probably just keep a piece next to me whilst I paint and periodically apply blobs, and left-over paint off my palette. Those fishies are so cute! I like the effect when you use little cut pieces of the skins in your paintings, and will revisit those vids for inspiration when the time comes
Thanks, Lena! They do peel of parchment paper nicely. One thing I forgot to mention in the video was that you can easily get really thin acrylic skins off of parchment paper (if so desired) compared to a palette. Thin skins usually tear and break when you try and peel them from palettes. Adding little bits to paintings is my favorite way to use skins. 😊
@@chrisloudart Thanks Chris.. I have ideas bubbling! 😁
When I tried my hand at paint pouring I was aghast at the wasted paint leftovers, dripping down over the sides so I stuck parchment paper underneath to catch it. I gave up on the pouring technique (it was okay, I guess, just not my thing) but was left with a huge stack of these skins! Some I've cut into tribal-looking mask shapes and they're really quite striking. Love the fish!
Thanks, Mrs. Noodles! I haven't tried acrylic pouring, but I don't think it would be my cup of tea either. But you never know. It does seem like a lot of wasted paint to me. I'd love to see the tribal mask shapes, they sound really interesting!
This was cool, thanks
Thank you, Jane!
Great Idea, Great DIY, Liked & Subed!❤
Thanks so much! 😊
Thank you Chris. I've been saving, but put it on a canvas and now it's stuck. Lol. I'm going to make a floral arrangement from them.
Haha, I've been there before. Have you glued it down or is it just stuck? If it's just stuck, you can try heating up the back of the canvas where it is and use a palette knife to gently get under it. I've had success with that before. Good luck! 👍
@@chrisloudart well damn. I got most of it off, but will use your idea next time!! Thank you bunches!!
So, so helpful! Rjx, Chris
So glad you liked this, Kathryn!❤️

Thanks, Lisa! ❤️ The royalty free image website I mentioned is pixabay.com/
Wondering if parchment paper for baking would work ? Skins look very cool , Ph.
Thank you, Philip! I think parchment paper would work as well. Give it a try
Those are beautiful. Have you thought of doing a world map with them?
Thanks so much, Diane! No, I haven't, but I LOVE that idea! Are you going to give it a try?
I love this! I wonder if it would peel off Saran Wrap. Great video!!
Thank you! I tried plastic wrap and didn't have much luck. Let me know if you're able to get it to work 😊
@@chrisloudart Was also wondering about glass as I know some artists use glass pallettes (thinking of trying this also).
I've had many people suggest glass. Let me know if you give it a try.😊
love this. new sub
Thanks, Kathleen! Welcome! 😊❤️
I just started to try this. Things I have learned is the skins do peel off of my disposable pallet paper just as easily as on a non stick pallet, maybe easier. Plus it works best if you add medium to the paint, i.e. like GAC 100. Thats even more important if using pourable thin acrylics which without medium is impossible to peel off even on a non stick. Maybe I use different acrylics, I dunno. Gamblin, Windsor Newton.
Oops. I meant Golden, not Gamblin.
Hey Ann! I appreciate the heads-up on your experience-thanks for the great tips on the palette paper and GAC100! Adding a medium like GAC 100 is such a smart move to ensure everything peels off smoothly. It’s so interesting how different acrylic brands and mediums can affect how the skins peel.
Haha...thanks for the clarification on the Gamblin comment. I was just starting to look that brand up online because I'd never heard of it before..😂
@@chrisloudart Glad I caught my error before you bought some Gamblin by mistake 😂. They are mostly oil painting related products. Their varnish, called Gamvar, works on acrylic paintings btw.
@@chrisloudart Just wanted to add, a big Thanks for introducing me to this. My first try was incredible. I have never had acrylics pop like this. I put the skins over titanium white. The skins were made using Golden Fluid acrylics that are transparent. Made basically a collage of these skins overlapping on the edges. Wow! Like stained glass.
Ew subscriber to your channel. Thank you for the detailed explanation on acrylic skins. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Take care
Thanks so much, April! Welcome 😊
😮😮 Omg !!! Lurvvve these 🤌🏻 some make jewellery with skins also
Thank you!❤️ I've seen some pretty amazing jewelry where the artist used acrylic skins. Quite unique!
@chrisloudart You are very welcome ☺️ I started a paint skin on baking paper last night but think I did it too thickly because it is still not dry...but then remembered that sometimes thin layers on pallets take different times depending on the temp inside your house.
@tamb3938 Yeah, I'll usually leave mine for a few days before I start peeling. Sometimes the underlayer is still not dry enough to peel after a day.

Hmmm, I like that idea...sounds like a great thing to test. I bet the slices would be really cool! I'll have to do an experiment with this-thanks for the suggestion 😊👍
More please :)
Will do 😊👍
The issue I have had which you did not address is when using skins in a journal, even after long dying times, if that journal is kept closed, the skins will stick to the other page and destroy the work when you try to open page again.
Hey Diane, great point! I definitely wish I would have addressed that. I typically do one of two things: Go over at least the areas with acrylic skins with a thin layer of acrylic gel medium and let that dry completely before closing my sketchbook, or insert a piece of parchment paper in between the two pages. Typically, I insert a layer of parchment paper.
Love the recycling concept, better than throwing plastic in the bin ❤
Thanks, Debbie! I agree on the recycling-plus you can get some really beautiful material for future projects.
How about covering each page with skins with parchment paper , work ok?
The painting at 8:33 reminds me of Everest.
