I forget how wonderful it is to just work with just black on white paper...the simplicity and the complexity-you achieved some really cool compositions. Thx for this demo Chris 😊
I really struggle with focal points in my paintings and they get really busy sometimes. Thank you for helping me see differently. I understand why you call a section the focal point, but I saw a different focal point on these. I get so confused sometimes. I hope you never stop doing this. I love what you create Chris., Maybe if I keep doing and watching I'll come to understand this great way cope with life. I love art!!!!!
I really appreciate your kind words! I totally understand where you’re coming from-it can be tricky to manage focal points without things feeling too busy. I'm so glad my videos are helping you see things differently! Keep experimenting and watching, and I’m sure things will start to click for you. Keep loving art!
I love the black and white painting - especially for this lesson. I think it shows definition more easily than colors sometimes. I appreciate how you teach how to look for the composition , contrast and focal point Love the stick marks!!
These are really cool! I like the after (extra?) spray outside your sock packaging stencil. The marks with the stick are really neat too. Thanks for sharing your process Chris❤️🇨🇦
I'm so happy to hear that, Kate! Thank you! ❤️ That's why I went with the little cans of water-soluble spray paint-I think they were only $5.50 each. With that said, I'm about to place another order for a few more colors.😂
Your first painting I’m calling it the exploding tire…love the curve. That piece you spray painted is so cool. Your second makes me think of lattice with that spray painted pattern. The third one is like a caricature of a face looking left with a big mustache while you were painting it. Very cool. Very enjoyable. Thanks Chris for the inspiration.
Hi Chris. A few years ago I experimented with similar art to the ones you show here. I used sepia paint and a 1 inch brush. I used to exhibit my black and white photography, fine art prints and digital art. I still make some of my digital art in B&W. I can't image me ever giving up working in that medium. It's possible to produce very dynamic, graphic art, with monotones in general. The ability to see patterns in things like clouds, fires, random objects etc, is built into the brain of humans, thank goodness! Your demo has rekindled my interest in the type of work you show in this video. Thank you so much for this.
Hey Gordon! It’s wonderful to hear about your background in black and white and digital art. I’m really glad my demo could spark your interest again-there’s so much to explore with monotones and dynamic patterns. I've only played with digital art, but I really want to dive in when I have a little extra time.
I loved these. The last one when upside down you saw a face. I did too, but it looked like a samurai to me and the face you saw is much higher up when compared to the one I see. Basically the “S” shape was the hair, the long triangle was the nose with some facial hair below it and the smaller brushstroke and splatters were the eyes for me. Pretty neat! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Thanks, Prisbot! I've been staring at this for a while and I just now saw the samurai. I don't think I would have noticed that without your help, but that is really cool! Thanks for describing it for me😊 That's now what I see in this one.
Love these! As always I like the way you explain how you look for the portions of the paintings that work best. Helps me consider my work differently. Not so all or nothing. Do you sign your work? I assume yes but I never sign mine because I am scared of ruining it! I guess I could sing the back. Having been looking for water based spray paint since I watched this!
Thanks so much, Nicole! I typically do sign my work, but if it's one that could be hung in different orientations I'll just sign the back. My guess is that there are more than one company making water-based spray paints, but this is the company an artist I know that does murals recommended to me - www.sprayplanet.com/collections/mtn-water-based-100-spray-paint?sca_ref=6609230.N1hDRPsBoW So far I really like their products.
Chris Loud this intuitive abstract painting with just black and white. I could see a face. Like the mark making. I am debating what shall I do with the two colors I took; orange and blue, black and white.
I truly enjoyed this episode. I’m a huge fan of black and white (and grey). I love all three pieces, especially the two you cropped. However, I like those two in their original format of long and narrow. It appears the dimensions are closer to fibonacci sequence of 8:13. I’m curious what it actually is. Please note, your videos are helping me move through my experimenting with abstraction. And yes, composition is all important.
Thank you, Pat! I'm so glad to hear these videos are helping. Funny you say that you liked the longer format, although, I did end up cutting these, I think I am going to play with that format a little more. It was such and engaging size to paint on.
Do you have any recommendations for reading about abstract painting? Readings that you find interesting because I really like your style and I think I should read something other than continuing to paint in that abstract style. Thank you very much. Julio
Hey Julio! Here are a couple that have made an impact on me-Acrylic Solutions: Exploring Mixed Media Layer by Layer by Chris Cozen and Julie Prichard (amzn.to/3Yv3cIC), Acrylics Unleashed by Glyn Macey (amzn.to/3BS5ys8). There are so many out there. I typically go to the library and grab a few for inspiration. I hope this helps!
Very nice! It reminds me of the 1920s darkroom experiments by Man Ray where he layed out some objects on photographic paper. (I saw a face in the vicinity of your monkey face btw., just not a monkey...)
Thanks, Marco! Love the Man Ray comparison! I'll have to go back and look for the face. In another comment by Prisbot, she saw a samurai face on the last orientation.
I am not a big fan of black and white paintings, I feel like one more color should be added or white drops of ink. On the other hand, maybe it belongs to its own category of sketching with ink/ painting. The last one is definitely Panda hanging from the tree. Thanks.
It's definitely not for everyone, but I always encourage people to try it a few times. It's can help you think a little differently about what you're doing with the paint, since color doesn't come into play. Ha ha, all I see when I look at the last one is a panda now.
I usually tape my paper off to a size of pre-cut mats that I have in case it turns out to be something I would like to mat and frame. I've sold a few of these pieces doing that. For the page with two taped off areas, I was planning on taping it off into four sections and decided not to at the last minute.
I usually prefer not to comment but I am absolutely in love with how these turned out. Thank you.
@@GOODNIGHTJLR Thank you so much for commenting, Jessica! I really appreciate that you did. I'm so happy you liked these😊
much better now that you talk about your reasons as well as real time.
@@SandraBarber-h4m Thanks, Sandra!
I’d like to see more monotone work. Thank you Chris.
Hey Janet! I'll add more to my list.
I forget how wonderful it is to just work with just black on white paper...the simplicity and the complexity-you achieved some really cool compositions. Thx for this demo Chris 😊
Thank you, Ann! ❤️ I have to remind myself now and then to do this type of exercise and every time I come away so happy I did.

Gorgeous! I LOVE THIS!! Thank you for sharing with us!
Thank you so much, Jackie! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I like this painting in black and white. It just shows you don't need a lot of paints to make art and have fun 😊
Thanks, Susana! I totally agree with you-it strips things down to the basics and its pretty freeing.
I love the black and white painting - especially for this lesson. I think it shows definition more easily than colors sometimes. I appreciate how you teach how to look for the composition , contrast and focal point
Love the stick marks!!
Thanks, Kelly! I sometimes forget to do these simple black and white exercises, but whenever I do them I come away with so many ideas.
Your videos are so informative and well put together. Thanks so much.
I really appreciate that! Glad you found them helpful. 😊
These are really cool! I like the after (extra?) spray outside your sock packaging stencil. The marks with the stick are really neat too. Thanks for sharing your process Chris❤️🇨🇦
Thank, Helene! Yeah, the spray outside of the stencil had a nice effect and added a mid-tone to the piece.😊
Thank you Chris, I love how you always inspire me. Much love and peace from London UK ❤🎉
Thank you, Kari! I love to hear that 😊
Another great demonstration!
Thanks so much, Katy!😊
Loving your tutorials, inspirational, thanks
Thanks, Andrew! So glad to hear that.
Great stuff, cheers Chris 👍
Thanks, Paul! Cheers
Love starting my day with you, you are so inspiring! Now I want some spray paint, good Lord Im gonna go broke. Lol

Haha, "exploding tire" is a great name! Love your interpretations of the paintings ❤️ Thank you!
Love these a lot, my style too, hopefully see you do more like this thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks so much, Debbie! I plan on doing more of these 😊

Chris l like where you're going with this I'm seeing a face I'm not sure about that but I think I sm, I love what you choose , it's amazing.

Chris this is great and I love the shading. Is the black acrylic paint?
Thanks, Kelly! Yes, it's Mars black acrylic paint.
