We’ll start with some intuitive mark-making-scribbles and splatters that are all about letting go of perfectionism. This isn’t about creating a masterpiece; it’s about enjoying the creative process and finding stress relief through movement and color. Expressive abstract painting allows us to release physical tension and engage with colors that soothe or uplift our mood. It’s an art therapy session that combines mindfulness and creativity.
As I layer acrylic paints and explore spontaneous shapes, I’ll share how this practice supports mental health and stress relief. It’s about more than just painting-it’s about finding art's inner peace and permitting yourself to be messy, free, and in the moment. This therapeutic art approach creates a space to unwind and recharge, all while exploring the magic of intuitive creativity.
If you’re new to this, don’t worry! This art therapy tutorial is accessible to anyone, and you can use whatever materials you have on hand. Spend 15-20 minutes splattering, layering, and seeing where your intuition takes you. It’s not about the result; it’s about the joy of creating and the stress relief it brings. Join me as we let go, play, and discover the calming magic of expressive abstract painting. Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments-I’d love to hear how art has helped you unwind!
And remember, keep on painting!

Been using art to channel many feelings lately. Hubster was just laid off from his job of 25 years due to corporate greed. My art ain't great right now but invaluable to my health, and usually results in a much calmer home. Problem and opportunity: no longer buying supplies I think I need because who knows how bad Bad is fixin' to get, so I'm having to improvise, which is the opportunity.
I'm really sorry to hear about your husbands job situation. It’s wonderful that you're using art to stay calm and find peace at home-improvising can lead to some unique and creative breakthroughs. Keep going, you got this! Things will get better.❤️😊
I learned recently that when I paint, my blood pressure drops so low that I don't need meds! I just need to paint every day to stay happy!
Wow, that's amazing! It's incredible how much art can have such a positive impact on your well-being.
Wow it was so freeing to view this video. Too often I put high expectations on myself to perform well in order to “deserve” to do art. I haven’t drawn or painted anything in months. This is a great influence on me. 🎨
I'm so glad to hear that, Stella! We all put seem to put that pressure on ourselves now and then. It's not always easy to convince ourselves to just show up and enjoy the experience of slinging paint around. You got this!
You’re the best Chris!
Thanks so much, Syl! I appreciate you 😊
@ your my hero in what you do and give to me
Merci Chris j'adore les coulures les éclaboussures, trop beau ❤❤❤❤
Merci beaucoup Martine ! C'est amusant de jouer avec eux.😊
love the splatters! I hate watching those commercial tutorials where they end up with a respectable, realistic painting within a minute but ruin it with perfect little stars. This somehow gives me peace
Thanks, Yazzie! I love splatters too-they're so unpredictable sometimes.
Art is unwinding for me as you know and i certainly don't do enough quick ones to loosen up, always to focused on getting the big stuff done.
Love this video for the wide range of strokes and ideas.😊😊😊
Thanks, Emmanuel! I know exactly what you mean about getting bogged down in the big stuff. It feels like that's where my focus has been lately. How's school going?
@chrisloudart overwhelming. Just surviving😊
@@emmanuelpower2439 Hang in there 😊
I love creating this way. My favorite is with Neocolor 2s in my sketchbook. Sometimes I’ll start with a Tombow marker under painting then go over with the neocolors. Love how the water mixes the two of them also.
Love your technique, Jane! Starting with Tombow markers and layering with Neocolors sounds like a fantastic way to add depth. The water mixing must give your artwork a really unique look.
Thanks , Chris .
Thanks for watching, Samuel!
These days, I pretty much only use art as a way of getting out of my head, letting new things in, re-setting my nervous system, etc. Definitely going to try that stencil brush splatter; thanks!
It's so great to hear that you're using art to help you relax and reconnect. 😊
Great art, great commentary... thank you😊
Thanks so much, Jane! 😊
i love what youre doing. youre an absolutely amazing person gto watch and follow. god bless your imagination, mind, health and yourself. thanks for all your efforts in these videos you upload for us.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind compliment!
Geometries are my fave!
Hey Marina! Me too!
Thank you for this video. I have been unable to create lately, but, you reminded me that when one creates, stress drops. Stress makes one stop everything, at least for me, and, the sad part is, getting some art supplies out would take some stress away, but, when stressed, it is hard to get your art supplies out. What a vicious cycle it is, but, you reminded me how beneficial it is. Thank you kindly. Wishing you a wonderful day.
Now I want to make Mini Art Kit Altoid Tins for Stressed Artists--one at your desk, one velcroed to the car dashboard, one magnetized on the fridge, one in the bedside drawer.....
@WPMaine I love that idea!!!❤️
@musicalemily5464 I totally hear you, Emily! Stress has such a way of shutting things down, but getting even one supply out can make a difference. I’m so glad this video helped remind you of the benefits of creating-wishing you a calm and creative day!
@ That is a very sweet idea! How lovely. Thank you for sharing.
@@chrisloudart Thank you very much. Wishing you the same.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support, Kathleen! I truly appreciate it ❤️

Thanks so much, Patricia! I love the energy of abstract expressionism! Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Greetings! New subscriber! You just came into my feed this morning even though I've been watching art tutorials for over a year. Algorithm is so weird.
You are my new favorite artist to watch and learn from. LOVE your vibe as well as your technique and style, both in painting and guidance. 💖✨
I'm 63 and recently started exploring printmaking and mixed media. I received my BA in studio art in 2001 with a focus on sculpture and wood carving, but had to give that up years ago due to chronic pain, particularly in my hands and upper back. I've tried pen and ink drawing and been playing with watercolors and watercolor pencils, but I need something looser to accommodate the difficulty holding tools for any length of time.
I'm really interested in expressing my emotions and frequencies through painting. Printmaking and collage just doesn't seem to do it for me in that regard.
I deeply appreciate your using tools other than a paintbrush. Eager to try! Thanks! 💖🙋♀️✨
Hey Barbara! It’s wonderful to have you here, and I’m thrilled to hear that my vibe and techniques resonate with you. I'm sorry to hear about your chronic pain. Your experience in sculpture and wood carving is incredible, and I understand how challenging it must be to adapt due to pain. Embracing acrylic painting, mixed media and alternative tools can open up so many new ways to express yourself. I'm honored to be a part of your creative journey-thank you for subscribing! ❤️
Love this!
I use art for my therapy daily: mostly abstract journaling, my prompt typically is: what if? So I can explore medium combinations via layering. Love your videos thanks for sharing; love your art too!
Thank you so much, Cathy! I love your "what if?" approach-it’s such a great way to stay curious and explore new possibilities.
Really inspiring, it would be great if you would consider making a X number of prompts challenge in a live weekly or monthly format next year.
Great idea!❤️ I'll give that some thought and try to work that out.
Stress sure is sneaky! I also love bold, bright, vibrant juicy colours, you can almost feel them resonate and they do when I play music, then the weird starts😆😆. Thank you again for an inspirational video. Cheers!
Stress is sneaky, but bold, juicy colors and music sound like the perfect antidote! The "weird" is when the fun really starts, right? 😆 Cheers!
@chrisloudart Oh yeah!! That's a whole other story😆 cheers!
Next level unlocked with brayer work!
I do love my brayers!
Fun!,
Thanks, Katy!
Great video! Sometimes I get involved in painting for hours at a time. It's the best therapy!
Thanks so much, Peggy! Letting yourself get lost in creating is such a wonderful experience. ❤️😊
Oh man i wish😂. I am such a neurotic I could never let go like this. Stresses me out just watching.😮 yikes I have to go and, as controlled as possible, place shapes and colors just so I can calm down.
Haha...I don't think you're alone, Rich!
I have recently started watching your videos and find them so inspiring! Thank you!
Hey, Kathleen! I'm so glad you're enjoying them! ❤️
Amazing, love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your talent 💜
Thanks so much, LM!😊
Love this piece ❤️ plan on trying after a “trying” day at work 🙂 thanks for sharing Chris❤️🇨🇦
Thanks so much, Helene!❤️
❤🎨☮️
Thanks so much, Rebecca! ❤️
Funny - this is what I did last night - scribbled then painted in it - around it but now I have to go throw splatter marks on it 😊
And thanks a lot
Now I have the “let it go” song stuck in my head 😂😂
😂😂I'm here for you-think of the day ahead of you with "Let it go" as your earworm. Tis gonna be a good day!
@ oh the torture 😂
🤣🤣🤣
U have turned into Mr. INFLUENCER. Ann, Florida fan
Haha, thanks Ann! Glad you’re enjoying the art from sunny Florida! ☀️🎨 Looks like I'm in for a snowy Thanksgiving.❄️
this is great! I sort of do the same with my fast sketches-
Thank you very much!
Should we feel guilty for copying techniques? Also how do we know when to stop an abstract painting? - loved the painting.❤
No need to feel guilty; experimenting with others’ methods is part of growing as an artist! As for stopping, when you catch yourself tinkering endlessly, that might be the perfect moment to call it done.
@@chrisloudartthankyou ❤
Do you bother to gesso your sketchbook pages before painting on them? Great message, BTW! Definitely trying to loosen up with no expectation of results. For my own mental health it should be a daily practice, and that is what I will work towards.
Thanks so much, Betsy! I don't typically gesso my sketchbook pages, but I usually do gesso any loose paper I paint on. It's a great daily practice to make a habit both for skill development and mental health ❤️
Can you provide a link to those fine line squeeze bottles? Thanks!

Love this one! so stimulating! Chris would you like to come to Sardinia? ( Italy) I live by the sea with big garden en you could do some workshops here and stay at my house! Bring your partner ( if you have one:))
Thank you so much, Joya! That sounds like such a wonderful art adventure-maybe some day!
This looks like great fun but I'm too much of a perfectionist. 😩
I hear you-I really enjoy these kind of quick painting sessions, but you definitely have to set your mind in the right place about what you're doing keep your perfectionist side at bay.
