I’ll walk you through two small acrylic paintings, exploring a little color theory with a palette of cobalt blue, vermillion, cadmium yellow, and titanium white. Mixing complementary colors like blue and orange, I’ll show you how to create neutral colors that aren’t just muted but deeply harmonious. These tones set the stage for vibrant hues, making them jump off the canvas while adding complexity and movement.
Neutral backgrounds don’t just balance a composition-they’re a secret weapon for creating contrast and making your focal colors stand out. By warming or cooling my neutrals with subtle tweaks, I discovered how abstract art neutral tones can elevate a painting’s dynamics. This technique is perfect for avoiding backgrounds that compete with your boldest strokes. Instead, they’ll complement and amplify your creative vision.
Throughout the demo, I also discuss color schemes in art and how complementary tones can unify a piece, ensuring everything works together seamlessly. Whether you’re new to abstract painting or looking to refine your technique, this video is packed with tips on color theory, how to create neutral colors, and crafting color harmony painting. Plus, I share insights on using acrylic paints for maximum versatility and impact.
If you’re ready to make your abstract art sing, join me and discover how abstract painting neutral colors can transform your artwork. Let’s make your paintings pop!
And remember, keep on painting!

Bonjour Martine ! Je suis ravie que cette vidéo vous ait plu. 😊❤️
The splash effects absolutely made these paintings!
Thanks, Dawn!❤️ They definitely gave a little something extra.
So much to learn. Mixing background from your colours, it really works. I saw a dog in this one then you said about a wreck. That's what's so fun about abstract; It's all there, you just have to see it.
I love that you saw a dog! It’s amazing how abstract art can spark so many different interpretations. Glad the color mixing stood out to you!
Awesome idea! Neutral colors definitely make such a difference to pop the colors which I see the bright colors stand out & my eyes go straight to the artwork which is a ideal way to show your abstract🥰
Thank you, Dawn! Neutral colors really do let those brights shine, don’t they? I’m so glad it drew your eye in just the right way!
I love these! Thanks for describing and guiding through the process!👍👍👍🩵

I'm so glad to hear that, Helene!❤️
Excellent explanations and techniques 😊
Thank you so much!❤️ I'm glad you enjoyed this!
you do a good job describing ,,im not educated in art ,i am art ,,i just paint ,,ive been at it for over forty years ,i went from painting the old masters to different techniques of abstract and now im hooked on abstract , i learned in oil ,the flemish style ,now im an acrylic painter and my paintings paint themselves ,,iu start with color and let it tell me the next move ,thanks for doing this video ,,im about to launch myself into the artworld and i dont know the terminology to use ,people need videos like this one because they dont understand color and the relation to contrast rather than form ,i studied form ,for years and there is noting i cant draw or sketch ,but the purity of color is it for me right now,,have a good day
Thank you! It's inspiring to hear about your passion for art. Good luck jumping into the artworld! The terminology will come-I'm a self taught artist and I come across plenty of art terms that I've never heard before. I think your approach to letting the color guide you is a great way to paint.
Beautiful and so informative! Thank you for sharing….
Thanks so much, Cathy!
I have been a follower of Cathy for a while ~ she is amazing ❤

Thank you so much, Patricia! I'm glad you're finding them helpful!
I've been working on keeping to a minimal color palette and using them together for a background. I've found your discussion of color mixing very useful in moving forward with this idea, and painting a subdued background is very effective. Thank you.
Thanks, Gail! I love hearing that the color discussions are beneficial!❤️ Sounds like you’re on a great creative path.
Very cool
Thanks so much, Phoebe!
Love seeing the process from beginning to end!! The vibrancy of the colors really do pop against the neutral….I would love to see more on color theory. Honestly, i just discovered your TH-cam and I’m just devouring every one of them!
I set out 4 yrs ago to dive into abstract but was immediately drawn into the intuitive process as it seems to reflect my neuro-divergent personality. I love the undisciplined beginning and really appreciate your reflections on taking in to the next level. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experimentations!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words! Exploring color theory can be really exciting, so I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future content. It’s great to hear that the intuitive approach resonates with you-that's my favorite way to create.
Wow!!!
❤
Thanks, Kathy! ❤️
Lovely paintings. I see a goldfish with its mouth open in one of your paintings . Thank you for today's lesson ; I will try it .
Ok brother, you can do tiny, Now let's C U make a 4 or 6 footer😂❤ we're waiting,,,
Thanks so much, Tisha! I think I see the goldfish 😊
Hey Jawad! They're not as easy to film in my small studio, but I'll get it done. I have a gessoed 36x48" ready to go. Stay tuned...
Another great video that’s given me inspiration to try out these techniques in a piece of my own. The two paintings you produced definitely have the feel of seascapes - either the shore of a mainland or even an island. When I do these kind of exercises, I’m somehow drawn to seeing figures or faces or animals (pareidolia) but I think I ought to broaden my scope a little and think outside of the box in terms of landscapes or botanicals. Keep up with the great content, Chris.
Thanks so much, Tom! I hadn't seen these as seascapes before, but I can totally see what you mean.
Thank you for all the tips!😍
Cathy WHO??? I can google if I just get a last name!

@chrisloudart Thank you very much been watching you for a while! 😊🙋♀️
@JanaBerg-f6v My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
When you put the colors on the neutral background, it appeared as revealing or uncovering the color rather than applying it Exciting
Thanks, Merri!❤️ Awesome observation!
