How I Beat an Art Slump with 2 Abstract Landscape Paintings

  • When I hit an art slump, it can feel like I'm staring at a blank canvas, unable to break free from the artist block. But in this painting demo, I share how I tackled that slump head-on with two abstract landscapes in my sketchbook. By revisiting past paintings and incorporating familiar elements, I found a way to reignite my creativity using acrylic paint. This process felt like art therapy, helping me move past the creative block that was holding me back.
    In this tutorial, I explore how working quickly and loosely in a sketchbook can strip away the pressure to be perfect, making it easier to overcome that dreaded art slump. I also tap into seasonal inspiration, drawing from the upcoming autumn colors, which added a fresh perspective to my abstract landscapes. The collage work in the second painting demo added texture and depth, allowing me to see the artwork in a new light.
    If you're struggling with an art slump or artist block, this video is for you. It’s all about overcoming creative block by reconnecting with the joy of painting. Whether you're using acrylic paint or another medium, the key takeaway here is to experiment, embrace the process, and remember that these quick sketchbook abstract paintings are more about movement and less about perfection. Join me on this journey of exploration and rediscover the excitement of creating abstract landscapes in your sketchbook.

    I've been blocked since a health crisis with my Mom that started in June 2024 and is just settling down now. It involved several hospitalizations and eventually moving her cross country to live nearby in an assisted living facility. Life is finally returning to normal, though a "new normal," (I am now her caregiver along with my sister), and it is excruciating that I cannot paint, knowing that it used to make me so happy. So I'm watching videos of abstract landscape work, which is my passion, and hoping for some 20 minute sketchbook sessions that I manage once in a great while. And trying every day to be kind to myself rather than feel the pressure of HAVING to paint. I am new to your videos and am loving them, especially as you are frequently working in a sketchbook. Thank you so much for your inspiration.

      Hey Betsy! It sounds like you’ve been through quite a lot, and it’s inspiring that you’re finding your way back to art, even in small steps. Those little sketchbook sessions can be so powerful-just enough to recharge and rekindle that passion over time. I’m so glad the videos are resonating with you and hope they continue to bring some inspiration during this new chapter. Hang in there!

    Great video- it's a huge challenge to get out of a slump. I agree with having some sort of beginning process to your art, the comfort of a process (at least at the beginning lol) is underrated. Thanks so much for articulating these issues that are in our artist heads but hard to pinpoint sometimes. Excellent job!!

    Such great insight. I like the idea of: I don't have to love it but it keeps me moving forward. I feel stuck a LOT so it's a real challenge for me. And then often, once I get started, I get lost in the weeds so I stop out of frustration. I enjoyed watching you persevere with the second one--it made me think that maybe I stop too soon? Hmmm.
    And, great advice about going back and looking at older pieces. I've done this and it has sparked new ideas or new variations on a theme many times. Love your work, Chris. So glad I happened upon your channel.

    One of the artists on Facebook showed how to take extra paint & add it to a small canvas & then turn it into an abstract painting. I balance it as I add the colors & shapes. As a bonus it allows me to use less paper towels & not having to change my rinse water out as much. Pretty cool.

    I love using collage as a starting point.
    There are many reasons we do art, and a lot of them are not to create that wonderful masterpiece to sell.
    Being able to do art for the inspiration it brings, the emotional release, the unlocking of paralysis, to see what feels good, for fun, are all very valuable reasons to create. And the end results of the piece are kind of irrelevant.

    • @chrisloudart
      @chrisloudart  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well said! Art can be so much more than just making something to sell. The process itself-whether it’s for inspiration, emotional release, or just for fun-can be incredibly fulfilling, and that’s what truly matters to me.

    Hi Chris,
    You evoke some really important issues and I don't think there is an arist alive who has not been through those blank moments. I get those periods when I don't have inspiration, buttry not to feel guilty about it, or any sense of responsibility. When the urge returns it returns. And sometimes, I just pick up some colours and paint - nothing, but just paint and make marks and then leave it. And then return the following day.
    at any rate, the discussion is a really long and complex one...

    • @chrisloudart
      @chrisloudart  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, Emmanuel! You're absolutely right-those periods of no inspiration can be tough, but I love how you approach it without guilt. Just picking up colors and painting, even without a plan, can be so freeing and in my experience leads to something special later on. Are you back to school soon?

    I often see you using a brush to blend the colors on the paper, in this video for example 1.21 min. Can you tell me what kind of brush this is?

      Hey Marc! The brush I used to blend with here is a 1/2 inch mop brush. I also use a 1 inch mop brush quite often.
      I'm planning on using two of these as inspiration for two medium size canvas paintings (18x24 inch, 45x60 cm) or maybe slightly larger, but I probably won't get to those for a few weeks due to some other projects I'm working on. 😊
