How to Edit Your Magic System
Sometimes, no matter how hard we try or how much effort we put into our magic system, we get things wrong. There's a power loop we didn't see, a contradiction between the rules and what our characters do, or we just don't know how to narrow down all the options into what we truly need. So let's talk about the different steps and tricks you can take when trying to edit your magic system

    So one thing I absolutely love for when you can't let your character do a thing that they have never done before, but that they absolutely should be able to do in theory is just that it doesn't work and I don't know why. The best part is that if you want them to then be able to do that same thing later it only requires some magical techno-babel to justify that change, it becomes a discernible marker in the power growth arc rather than an inconsistency.

    About the disability thing I used to like this book called Outlaws of Sherwood st. It's a Robbin Hood type story. I reread it this year and I hated it. There's a group of kids that get magic powers from this magic bracelet. One of the kids have glasses and one has a stutter and can't really speak. The girl with glasses when the power is working has perfect vision. When the power is working the boy has a perfect voice. 12:06 I set up a minor antagonist to becomes a god after their complex plan finally comes together. The last remnants of the old generation almost get the most improbable of wins, but due to infighting and old grudges they essentially allow the new villain to kill them all. Now I have my protagonists with no old gen help and against the most difficult foe possible... and I've written myself into a corner. Really sucks to suck. :/

    • @hyronvalkinson1749
      @hyronvalkinson1749 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@themagicengineer5314 Thematically the old generation was full of hubris (in different forms) and insane egos. These flaws essentially came full circle and thematically closed the loop on their arcs by having their failures manifest itself into an unkillable god that they accidentally created. They had lived their lives as superior in almost every aspect to everyone else, so having the new antagonist kill them (and only by them fighting each other instead of the obvious threat) was long-deserved comeuppance. The best of them did hint in his final words that final hope still exists via the protagonists. So thematically, avoiding that scenario is difficult but doable. However, I want to leave it mostly untouched since it's such a great ending for everyone who died and such a great ascension for this new antagonist. However, now he has reality-warping powers (who's only limit is his mind - this could possibly be exploited but I can't figure out how) and the protagonists (powerful as they are) are hopeless against such a threat... except some of the old gen have hope in the protagonists. Why? I'm trying to figure that out. And I'm stuck. How do you access the mind of someone who has powers over seemingly everything else? This is final boss sort of stuff so thankfully I don't have to worry much about story-breaking after-effects. The antagonist should (hopefully) be put down or at least meaningfully-threatened.

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@hyronvalkinson1749 Well you have a couple of options you can explore. - Maybe the god's power isn't as overwhelming as they THINK it is. There might be nuances and limitations they can discover and exploit as the story progresses - maybe the god's power CHANGES over time, developing flaws and weaknesses - Maybe the protagonists ultimate goal is to become a rival got that is equally powerful. Not necessarily defeating the antagonist, but balancing it out - they could defeat the god through non-magical means by tricking it, taking advantage of vices, or otherwise acting outside the magic system. A lot of times when we end up in a "corner" it's because we've become too focused on using a specific type of solution. We have LOTS of tools at our disposal as writers, so if you can't find a solution with one tool, spend some time considering what other tools you have and how THEY might do the job. I hope this helps. Good luck defeating the unstoppable god!

      @@themagicengineer5314 Well, right now I've just the barest phantom of an idea, but I'm leaning on internal: most of the magic itself happens during the crafting of a magical item, when the artisan "programs" the magic into the object while making it. That said, I'd like to give importance to categories of Materials, Technique and Purpose of the item so, for example, a Metal shield, Forged for Protection would have a different effect than a Wooden shield Carved for Protection. End users, those who get the items, wouldn't need to be mages to use them, just "tap" into the magic (... somehow).

There are a lot of cause and effect relationships happening that I know but the characters dont. Its basically the standard mana pool combined with animism. So everything has a mana pool since everything was created with magic or at least a few characters claim. Its mostly basic elemental but also light and darkness magic and a little bit of necromancy. @17:00 Why this creature, not that creature? Easy. Biology. In order to be able to control a creature's body, you have to understand how that body works. It takes time to disect and study a creature to understand how their particular muscles, tendons, etc. move. For me, a magic system must require some level of learning. Simple, brute force magic requires less so, but the more powerful, but defined you want an effect to be, the more learning is required.

    I thought of a magic system where magic used tru focus points in every humanoid creature (aka humans elves ect.) . Both magic and non magic users have focus points (side note the densest concentration of focus points is in the hands mostly in the fingers) and an aura is emanated from all focus points .The aura can be felt better if more basic Mana(or elemental Mana) is released. No one is limited to just one element and can convert the basic Mana into elemental Mana . Beginner Mages are trained to manipulate the Mana inside their body and cast directly a element ball from their hands (fireball, waterball , earth shot, wind spike, etc) and an barrage of smaller element balls from their fingers (fire flares, water drops, stone bullets, wind streams ) the single shot cast type is more intense on the user's body than the barrage , because they have to draw way more basic Mana and then convert it to the desired element. Everyone who uses magic has a drawing limit on their Mana and reaching it usually for the average beginner mage will lead to them exploding the receiver focus points or at least damaging them. Eventually that limit can be broken by concentrating and releasing more extreme amounts of Mana, but still less than the current limit. This exercise is for the extension of the safe drawing limit and the draw limit at a lesser scale . There is also an indirect version of these cast types where the user utilizes their aura to decrease the pressure to the primary focus points ,but it requires a really great skill in energy control. There are also beam casts , laser casts, laser barrages and sub-elements like electricity, ice, metal etc.

      Also Mana is restored in a few ways: passively(by converting nutrients to Mana) and by consuming food the more nutritious the food the more the Mana is recovered.

      When fire beam, ball, etc of one user collides with the water beam , ball, etc of another user it creates a steam element that is harder to control because the two users have different energy signatures and can't control the blob of the two signatures.

    Ummmm is mine ok?: This Magic system is about the energy types which is: Kinetic Energy -natural Potential Energy. -natural Gravitational Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy Thermal Energy. -paradoxal Chemical Energy. -paradoxal Electrical Energy. -paradoxal Radiant Energy (Light Energy)-paradoxal Nuclear Energy. -artifficial Mechanical Energy. -artifficial Sound Energy. -paradoxal Magnetic Energy. -artifficial This Magic system came from nature and knowledge explaining the origins on each energy.(Paradoxal means both artifficial and natural) But there are limitations to Magic such as: -with modern Magic you can create simulations but if you try to get NPCs out of it, it'll have serious consequences as well as your energy draining and getting weaker and when that happens there won't be enough energy to keep the simulation alive but if you have lots of energy you can keep it alive for a short Time. -if your Magic type's the target type you Can access to a bunch of unique abilities but you cannot control weither you want to use it or not unless if you're chill in danger. -You cannot use any other Magic types that doesn't contain your energy type -You can gain another Magic type by just finding an extremely super rare ribbon And rules: -You can only use Magic if your energy isn't below 30% -you have to find a energy source to charge yourself And there are some other things that you need to watch out like paradoxal(Real) évents for exemple: -people going missing -static appears as a wall -mysterious Doors with the number "666" written on it -corrupted people that has a watery looking like black silhouette and that has multiple eyes all over their body.

    • @AceProductions10
      @AceProductions10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@themagicengineer5314 the definition of natural and artificial energies is not so complicated, so first of all natural energies can generate from natural objects like flesh, blood, bones, plants and many more. And cannot come from artifficial objects making it impossible for natural beings like humans, wolfs ext to have artifficial energy types... Unless if you find the extremely mega rare ribbon... And artifficial energies generates from artifficial objects/beings like robots, Hybrid, and many more and just like natural energies they cannot come from natural objects unless you find the ribbon... And paradoxal is both of them making them free so that's why all magic types has respective energy types and for the costumized ones or NULL ones like the target type are chill in danger so here's your answer!

    One thing I think could be really cool to see-and something I’ll design for a story-is to have necromancers have a “code of conduct” when it comes to their magic and rituals. To give an example: while necromancers still use reanimated corpses to act as minions and free, cheap labor, they also have laws in place that says only those who *agreed* to *willingly* let their bodies be used post-mortem can be reanimated. Then, you could have things like a society where people have something akin to a fantastical version of a “organ donor” status: when they die, their bodies are sent to the local necromancers to be reanimated as they are used. I also think a cool idea could be to have necromancy be used similar to exorcisms: in this case, necromancers find dangerous spirits (poltergeists, phantoms of murderers or murder victims, etc.) and forcibly send them to the afterlife (or whatever is after death) to help protect the living.

      @@themagicengineer5314 I’m glad you do! And yeah, that is a good comparison! Also, if you haven’t checked it out yet, the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir also has heroic necromancers who might have some aspects similar to Constantine (as of writing this, I have only read about the series but haven’t read it yet, but I hope to). To be honest, I even have a character in my head for this kind of story that would fit a lot of Constantine’s character as well (cynical, anti-social, snarky, etc.). I’m even brainstorming the story, and while I still have a ways to go, I do have a title and basic conflict: The Last Necroturgist-since technically speaking, “-mancy” is a suffix that just means “divination” while “-urgy” is a technically a suffix that means “work/technique for working with” I’m going to rename a lot of magic-users with that suffix in my story-and the main story will be about a group of five other mages trying to find the last remaining necroturgists/necromancers to stop an invading “zombies” with the catch being the zombies are biomechanical, H. R. Giger-styled, eusocial (and Hive Minded) creatures that actually have a *very* hard time working with dead and decaying matter. I’ll be sure to send you an email about when it’s available, if you’d like. 🙂

    We call it the basics of magic but the basics are the building blocks so really, the basics are the most powerful if you build on existing pillars of truth. Oh, is this not as above, so below. Wizards master the basics and sorcerers master self will. Tolkien didnt write fantasy he just repeated the story.

    I find that actual linear growth will feel like it is slowing down over time. This is like how the difference from having $10 to $100 feels more like the difference from $1,000 to $10,000 rather than $1,000 to $1,090. For progress to feel linear, it should be exponential. Or put another way, dragons tend to cover a wider range of power levels than street thugs do.
