Watching a video discussing magic system structures on a Wednesday morning reassures me about the progress of the human race. Valuable content like this is precisely why I invest in Alphabet stock. This channel has been instrumental in my recent improvements to my own magic system. It’s just wild that I have access to it from a rectangle in my pocket. Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks so much for those kind words! I'm so glad my content is helpful technically with your magic system and more wholistically with the oppressing sense of ennui of the modern day :) Be sure to let me know if you have questions!
Awesome! Glad to hear it man. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or are running into stumbling blocks. And I do offer coaching and free consultations if you're really stuck
TH-cam don't demonetize Heisenberg. Also as far as the ice magic vs tanks thing goes I might focus on thermomatics, so something more akin to fire magic than just conjuring frozen water, and then super cooling the tanks to the point where either the diesel engines are refusing to combust, or where the fuel is gelling inside the lines before it reaches the engine depending on how cold it is outside at the time and if the magic is better at cooling by a certain amount or at heat dissipation into the environment. I've always loved the bit in wizards first rule where they couldn't cool the water so they made a fire on it's surface out of all the heat in the water to freeze it.
Good suggestions! You could even take it along a route of magic dealing specificaly with hydrolics and hydrolic systems or maybe a more general technology or heat-transfer based concept. That just gave me an idea of a crewmember in the tank being one of these mages, pulling heat and energy from the air to increase the power behind their tank round while simultaneously creating a friable armor of ice
@@themagicengineer5314 what about using a cryonasist(?) to super cool one side of a sterling engine while heating the other side from the radiator of the engine then using that mechanical force in charging up a vandergraph device. Then you can discharge that through some copper electrodes on the outside of the tank, either to shock foot soldiers trying to get in, or electrify the mud in a trench, or maybe power a rail gun using super cooled rare earth superconductors, or have a pneumatic canon powered by tanks of liquid atmospheric gasses released all at once. I tend to find an actual engineering heavy take on tech-magic to be much more interesting than my gun is just a wand with extra steps take on it.
That sounds pretty awesome@@TheMichaellathrop There's honestly a lot that could be done simply being able to enhance the efficacy of a heat exchanger or radiator.
A great video. Thank you. I've never heard of the term 'Seed Crystal' but in my case it truly was the very first thing that I had cemented before writing my magic based YA fantasy. Without it, I could not have created both the world and characters which populate it. Furthermore; knowing the magic system and how it works with a fine tooth-comb, was vital to driving plot outcomes and believable action/reaction scenes. To my mind, there is nothing worse than reading a story with a vague/soft magic system, where a solution to a character/s problem is suddenly resolved by a piece of random magic pulled from a characters arse without any prior explanation, or reasonable legitimacy for it existing without prior explanation.
So glad you enjoyed the video flatdude! There's defiinitely a place in fiction for vague, soft, and irrational magic systems, but you CANNOT use them in your story the same way you use a concrete, hard, or rational magic system. And what your talking about at the end, solving problems with magic, that's something I want to dig into in a livestream/videos soon
@@themagicengineer5314 I've noted that date on my calendar in case I don't get a notification. Thanks for the heads up and have yourself an awesome Christmas until then.
I was glad and felt a sense of this video, as before I tried to write a few Zombie stories, but it was not happening as they had no flow or like referenced as "disjointed", then after listening to audio magic stories, as I had listened to every Zombie storyline. Then I was saying I could write that much better and off I went, I thought it would be a bit harder than writing about Zombies, as I had a limited view of magic as in making the magic system. I spent zero time being prepared from a writer's perspective, of "world-building" Etc. It's when I got to book/chapter 7. It was when it was about making the book physical I ran across all of these influencers. I call mine the Codex of Magic Systems where one needs a Codex deciphering tool as in math to language or a Magic System Seed Crystal I also use this system in my system as well, it's roughly just expanded like saying Magic "Mana" system Seed Crystal, As Mana is like a wall, and if you slam into the wall enough times you're going to get to know it from experiences in defining it, as we begin to unravel it from the other stuff attached to it as crystallization is one of it's roots of math. Like looking at the chalk blackboard the magic math is written upon, what is the math of the chalk blackboard and how is it holding "up" the magic math written upon it, as there is another math magic chalk blackboard holding the one up in the reality of the world, as there could be a multitude of math chalkboards each holding up another chalkboard of math this type of thinking. Naturally, I had to start at the conditions from effect and cause being first the mana wall as math goes in and changes then comes out the other side all different from which you are denied seeing it. I arrived from Earth into a magic world as this is a Mana World, versus an electrical one as its functional base in the physical world of reality. So yes great video as always! Thank you for your efforts in giving out to others.
It's just me in my explanations, really, stuff from the past has left me somewhat "broken" in my reality - I'm a shattered piece of reality, For instance, my Death Experience at 13 also being a Sigma INFJ and a Savant of sorts from being Dyslexic in Dyslexia born out from frustration from trying to punch through a learn curve wall, I sort of just sort of went under the wall and came somewhere else in left field and then travel back to you where or are by bridges of articulation so then you can travel out to the left field as well. simply to experience it for your own amusement. Once you find the "magic Seed Crystal" only then will the momentum happen "all" on its own. As the words fly onto the paper gripped in the storyteller of telling. As most of the readers are "extroverted" as being Introverted is rarer, I'm also severe at it, niche-wise that is. As INFJ we love to solve problems and to simplify it, and hone it at 9000+ levels of diamond stone under magnification to perfection, inner amusement perhaps or just habit-forming thing. We like patterns as well, especially my death experience patterns are much different than there are in Quantum energy signatures, similar to computer handshakes there is always an exchange of math with addresses as it's recorded and stored. Once you open the folder and the living math appears, it is already too late. You are pulling at things and beyond your 5 senses, rather than trying to articulate them into words, at some point, you need a deciphering tool, which can become patterns of math, then you might not realize your language is referred to as Morse code, as you think of it as fiber optical, as your shown something far beyond your grasping yet your interacting with it somehow like breathing, and is this the result of the magic seed crystal, yet it's a wall to you like death is a curtain. Unless it comes to visit you in your sleep, that is. Or you see it in your living reality doing things as your intuition goes off, the little man with the flight deck suit appears with the red lights begin hailing at you, "over Here" he yells jumping up and down until you see him, then it begins flashing until you look at it, to stop the flashing, then you will know great knowledge in an instant. then it's all gone, like it was never there. @@themagicengineer5314

Sorry mate you lost me on this one! You’re defining it by A) an abstract analogy to actual crystals B) explaining the consequences of not having it C) by similarity to elevator pitch and D) by examples. If you’re making up your own terms you need a clear definition! Why can’t ”Ice magic stopping an army of tanks” be a seed crystal? From your examples it appears a seed crystal is a magic system elevator pitch that explains the aesthetic, core mechanic(s) and dramatic premises of the magic. Is that what you mean?
A seed crystal is the core concept you as the creator are focusing on and building the rest of the magic system around. Your definition also works. And there's no reason that "Ice magic stopping an army of tanks" couldn't be a seed crystal... if it's working for you. The problem was that it wasn't working for this guy so he needed to either modify the idea into a seed crystal or find one that worked better for him. Hope that helps. As always, I appreciate it when people express their confusion (and in some cases) frustration in a courteous and collaborative manner. Thank srasmus! Keep pushing me for answers and clarity
