The planets could be different aspects of the Stars power so if you have an ice like power for your star than one planet could be in charge of reducing temperature and another could be in charge of crystallizing and another planet could be in charge of spreading like snow

External magic. When you steal a Star, the energy is still flowing, it just is redirected to a different user. Just because the flow can't be interupted does not mean it is internal. Even an internal flow can be interupted, like Chi and chakras.

People have whole solar systems. Number oand type of planets affect elements/fields of magic while the star type/size determins how powerful the person's magic is

That's kind of what I was thinking. If you wanted to make an more complex and well documented system, that would be a ton of fun.
What kind of effects or classifications would you associate with the different planets?

@@themagicengineer5314 I'd have to give it more thought, but I'd probably categorise planets by their type (Gas Giants, Ice Giants, Terran, Dwarf, etc...) for the effect/school (mancia/divination, urgia/workings, enchantment, etc..) and their location within the system (Sub-Goldilocks, Goldilocks, Super-Goldilocks, Kuiper Belt) for the element (fire, earth, air, water)

@@themagicengineer5314 I am not well versed on the different categories of stars and planets, but ultimately, it is all a matter of creating a table or spreadsheet. Planet types, (gas giant, ice giant, terran, etc...) for columns giving the school/type of magic (Divination, Transformation, etc..) and where the orbit is (inner, goldilock, outer, etc..) for the rows giving the elements (Earth, Fire, Air, etc../Energy, Life, Matter, etc..)

I was catching up on the 20BooksTo50K Vegas videos, and I came across your lecture. I then had to look you up, and I have been learning so much from your content, got both books on making magic systems (I'm writing grimdark fantasy currently). And these videos are a BLAST. Dr. McTier is great, I will check out the Fate & Fabled playlist, and her book! And these two videos with Dr. McTier are perfect for people like who enjoys brain-picking.

The Source is finite, but so long lived that for the individual, it might as well be infinite. When somebody dies, their Star bonds with a newlyborn or newlyconceived person.
Maybe this is true soul trasnference/reincarnation from one life into another. The Star is bonded to a soul, which gets reborn for as long as the Star exists.
