  • Sometimes, no matter how hard we try or how much effort we put into our magic system, we get things wrong. There's a power loop we didn't see, a contradiction between the rules and what our characters do, or we just don't know how to narrow down all the options into what we truly need. So let's talk about the different steps and tricks you can take when trying to edit your magic system

So one thing I absolutely love for when you can't let your character do a thing that they have never done before, but that they absolutely should be able to do in theory is just that it doesn't work and I don't know why. The best part is that if you want them to then be able to do that same thing later it only requires some magical techno-babel to justify that change, it becomes a discernible marker in the power growth arc rather than an inconsistency.

That's a great way to take advantage of foreshadowing and hanging a lantern on something

Thank you so much for the kind comment! I'm glad it was useful. Is there anything else you'd like me to cover or something you have questions on?

@@themagicengineer5314 I actually would love for you to give us tutorial on how one should format their magic system in Google doc or something similar. It would ease my current pain on how exactly should I categorize my magic system to make it readable or tidy.

@@themagicengineer5314 I actually would love for you to teach us how we should format magic system into categories or section that will be tidy and readable. It would help me tremendously on my current issue where I have a lot of notes and currently struggling on how I should compile it all together neatly

@@themagicengineer5314 how exactly should the info about our magic system be split into? Magic type? Spells? Ability? Perks?
How to judge the thing your writing falls under what part of the magic system?
Like, how exactly should one compile their notes about the magic system?I'm not exactly literate but I think that's what I try to convey here.

I think you should rename the video to "How to Expand Your Magic System". Encouraging writers to 'future proof' their magic system is a great idea, I'm doing that right now.
