Duality in character writing
มุมมอง 35Kวันที่ผ่านมา
This week we're exploring duality in character writing. Both in how it's used in many different stories across genre and how Frieren: Beyond Journey's End used it to enhance their protagonist. Frieren's exploration of demons is really interesting. It's probably the thing I got the most hung up on in my first watch through. After spending a lot of time thinking about it I feel like I learned a lot about the way I want to think about media. It ended up giving me answers for other shows I struggled to enjoy. Interesting. in general, most character in demon slayer has this "mary sue" problem. either because the story is too short. or too many character introduced too quick for us to relate. or just shit character writing. The power scaling and its power ups also too steep.

    I think the way they could have made Zenitsu work is by focusing more on the relation between him and his grandpa. It is established that he was the one person who never gave up on Zenitsu and because of this he is deeply grateful, it is why on mount natagumo he fights through beeing poisoned long enoughto be saved. And while they could have been more explicit about it, him becoming and staying a demon slayer is probably because of his grandpa spending so much time training him and Zenitsu not wanting to waste that effort. Spoilers: His grandpa is also the reason why Zenitsu suppresses/leaves behind his cowardice for the finale. Where it is shown that Zenitsus grandpa committed seppuku because one of his students became a demon, and Zenitsu as a result becomes serious and goes to fight this demon. The problem is that all these points are kept either to vague or are just thrown in whith little development. It also didn't help that conscious and unconscious Zenitsu where almost two separate characters.

    I like your videos! Frieren is great and I've rewatched S1 a couple times on top of reading all the manga that is (or well, was out- I'm like 20 chaps behind I think since I've been ignoring it 'till it's fully finished since I don't want to do stop/start reading as the chapters come out). Similarly as far as comparison to Demon Slayer goes: while I rewatched Demon Slayer to catch up when the latest or previous season aired (I don't remember) I don't really recall noticing anything new and ended up just skipping through things after a few episodes because I largely remembered everything while with Frieren I noticed details I never did the first time and I never skipped anything because it's just so well-done it's enjoyable even if I know what's going to happen. As far as Mushoku Tensei goes S1 I think was great but past it was incredibly disappointing. The overall plot was pretty interesting but the specifics, especially for Rudy's character development (or lack thereof past halfway through S2 or so), were a letdown. For context: I read through all of the LNs when S2 started airing because I couldn't wait for the episodes. There's many things that were done extremely well in the story, most of them early on, but similarly there's an astounding amount done so poorly I'm left genuinely confused. Any time I think of things I like about it I inevitably think of some other aspect which annoyed me to no end. Do yourself a favor and don't watch or read anything past S1 (or even S1 if you won't be able to leave it 'unfinished'). == MUSHOKU TENSEI SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING (and rant warning lmao) == While I think the ending is actually pretty nice there's some genuinely infuriating events to get there and the character growth is overall lacking. I'm not sure he ever truly grows out of being excessively horny which while it IS a core part of his character and I don't fully expect that; I mean if your libido is high it kind of just *is* and I don't think that changes what I DO expect is for him to not question how "strange" it is that he *isn't* attracted to his sister(s) nor his own children, holy shit. I mean yeah he's NOT attracted to them but like what normal person thinks about that? Multiple times, no less (iirc there were at least 2 of these in his internal monologue at different points in the story). Oh and don't even get me started on the things his alternate-future-self did (and the future-self thing itself being stupid and thinking about it more I wonder if that only even happened because the author just couldn't explain how Rudy would come to realize Hitogami isn't his friend and settled on ~TIME TRAVEL MAGIC~. I think it much more likely Rudy would actually fall into a deep depression and end up killing himself (perhaps indirectly, via taking excessive risk from apathy) given what we'd seen up to that point in the story NOT end up on a revenge-quest and figure out how to time travel so he can die in his previous self's basement though I guess maybe multiverse can explain that away.. sigh. Perhaps most importantly though, the things his alternate-self did strike me as simply the author going "yeah it's really bad for Rudy if his wife dies he becomes a terrible person, see!" when like.. his wife dying itself is bad enough? We don't need some extra justification for him to prevent his wife from dying in the form of him becoming the worst piece of shit imaginable: this actually reminds me of what was said in the video where increasingly terrible things should be similarly important to the story and be given the respect they deserve which didn't happen here. It doesn't help that I correctly predicted what would happen with his relationships like 1/3 of the way through and *also* predicted it would make sense (as to how it all comes to pass in the story) but simultaneously piss me off and feel forced. He ends up marrying all 3 key chicks (in polygamy) and while each one makes sense it's still dumb as shit *especially* Roxy's sequence of events. I could rant about this for actual pages I've deleted like 5 versions of this post so I'll just leave it here. Sorry but nobody I know has read all of MT and I've sorta needed to get it off my chest, I guess.

    I think that you shouldn't go into Zenitsu's character if you haven't read the manga, because it's really in Infinity castle where he shines the brightest. If you don't want to get spoiled, i advise you don't read more, because this is some heavy spoilers for the next movies. Zenitsu in Infinity castle is another Zenitsu from any of the other arcs. If you looked at the end when he fell in, he looked serious and ready for combat, but he actually also had his eyes open. Think about it. Even the hashira are all just confused and perhaps panicking, but the one person we know who is the biggest coward is more calm than most Hashira right now? You know, the crybaby we expect would be screaming off the top of his lungs to get out. There are glimpses for this development, as we see he is acting more calm when Tanjiro had passed the boulder test and heard Gyomei's backstory. Zenitsu had received a letter that his master had comitted Seppuku (Basicly suicide) because the other student we saw in Zenitsu's flashback had turned into a demon. In response, Zenitsu dramatically matures to the point he is as calm as a Muichiro. He's capable of fighting with his eyes open. I won't spoil anything more, but Zenitsu is an entirely different beast at the end of the series than he is now

    I don't think it's correct or fair to call Stark or even Usopp a coward. In order to be brave, you have to have fears. Bravery is the very act of overcoming your fears and without fear, you literally cannot be brave. A coward is someone who does not overcome his fear but stark and usopp constantly do so. And to take it one step further, an insanely powerful character who is not afraid of anything is not brave. Being able to face something that poses no danger to you is not brave. It'd be like saying I'm brave for being willing to face a fly in mortal combat.

    Zenitsu was funny at first, I remember laughing at his quirks at the start of the manga. But then it stayed a recurring joke with no resolution and I can't even remember if he lived or died by the end of the series. One of the central characters in the story is literally a joke, nothing more than that. Which is sad, I agree with you that a coward is an interesting archetype. As anxiety being one of the lead mental issues and every person is affected by it in at least some degree in their lives, it feels therapeutic to watch a scaredy cat getting a hold of themselves and amount to something. It just hits home.

    After watching this whole video, I kind of agree?? Not so much but not none atall, mainly with your points of why he stuck to being a demon slayer and so on, he's doing it because the old man that taught him actually believed in him, not many people actually believed in zenitsu, he was bullied and always looked down upon, its explained and its reinforced later on when you see he gains that confidence in order to make a significant change, actually winning a fight without being unconscious, though its still never explained WHY he's able to do that in the first place. While its missing writing points its not completely neglected.

    SPOILERS FOR LATE INTO THE SERIES ONE PIECE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I really hated the fact that so many people were mad that Usopp was still a coward during Wano because most of their reasons for being mad made no sense. One of the main arguments I saw back then was “he has no progression,” but he does. He obviously still runs, but that’s quite literally the only thing keeping him alive; he is a sniper who honestly should not have survived some of the beatings he’s gotten. Another argument I saw many people make was, “You’d think he would’ve gotten over his fears by now," when that’s even dumber, the last fight we see him have is between Trebol and Sugar, then the very next real fight we see he has is against Big Mom, page one, and Ulti three REALLY huge leaps in combatants.

    • @realo3503
      @realo3503 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The Nami crying scene was especially terrible because a lot took it as very face value as usopp not having faith in Luffy's dream and showing he would lie if he was in that position to save himself, despite as far back as Alabasta, it showed he was willing to die for his beliefs in Luffy and his dreams and was willing to continue fighting even if he didn’t believe he could win. That scene wasn’t him not having faith in Luffy's Dream, but a scene showing he cares for Nami. At this moment, he wanted her to lie, not because it was something he would do but because he wanted nothing more in this moment than for his nakama to live.

    • @realo3503
      @realo3503 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Also, to add to the Nami scene, people seem to forget the events that happened prior; both of them were back in a very tight corner before their escape. A heavily injured Usopp, who was already demoralized because none of his attacks were working, was then headbutted through a wall, with Haki unable to help while Ulti was prepared to kill Nami. He then heard a way out for her, and of course he would want her to take it because it would mean his nakama could live another day.

    I do feel bad for this youtuber, because while usopp is amazing pretimeskip, post timeskip many of one piece's main cast become shells of their former selves. Many of the unique interactions and abilities the crew possessed before or after meeting luffy can and WILL be forgotten in the race to make one piece characters more "attractive" or "humorous" looking at sanji and his timeskip training arc smh

  • @kerroseir4764
    @kerroseir4764 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Before watching this a coward becomes annoying when they never grow mentally or physically. Look at usopp his post time skip self is known to be equal to pretimeskip zoro and yet his skills are far above zoro's. The issue I have is that usopp has strength but refuses to use or acknowledge it leading to moments where he tells nami to lie to the enemy to their face about strawhat not being the king of the pirates one of his worst scenes and made him my all time unfavorite for life Yet, look at nami she is weak as well but doesn't give up and is steadfast for luffy. The two issues these characters face is that nami's strengths as a navigator get removed and forgotten as the story goes on being replaced with "look at her chest, yep thats her only character trait yall" whereas usopps gets his strengths turned into negatives. he's no longer cunning or a sharp aimer he's just a coward and someone who doesnt make the strawhats look strong but actually makes them look weaker because of his involvement or lack therof writing a coward shouldn't become writing a traiter, yet that is all usopp ever is (looking at demon slayer zenitsu is a coward but his issue is never acknowledging his strength until he reaches the end of the story, but because peeps haven't seen his full arc they are quick to dump him as an unserious rude man and honestly after the final arc he does go back to being pitiful and that is where demon slayer also fails by making him a terrible human being) TLDR-don't write your cowards to be negative aspects of human beings like traiters or bums, make them scared individuals who aren't meant for the situations they're put through but still go through those situations anyway because they care (trust me usopp gets worse)

    Well done on this video, but I did have something to say about zenitsu. I can understand why people don’t like his character, since it’s kinda the point in the beginning, but I wouldn’t argue that it’s realism for why he acts like that. Both zenitsu and inosuke are introduced as annoying and irregular people. We see zenitsu being a a huge coward, and lecherous. However, zenitsu’s is not just playing the coward archetype, but the something more like the crouching moron/hidden badass. We see that behind all that fear and idiocy, there is a competent demon slayer underneath, but he can’t. Because of this hidden skill that he has, it creates more of a mystery as to how he was able to hone this skill and why he’s so afraid when he can be so capable, something that is explained much later in the story (I won’t spoil it if anyone wants to read it). I’m not saying you can’t hate zenitsu, that’s kinda the point (even characters in the show acknowledge his shitty behavior) but overtime, we see him slowly begin to change, towards being both more responsible and less selfish. And with the crescendo of his character arc happening soon with the movie trilogy, I expect people will be changing how they view zenitsu.

    Hearing your thoughts after watching Frieren, I’m curious what you would extrapolate from To Your Eternity

    Even worse, zenitsu protecting the box is partially just set up for his other annoying trope where he chases Nezuko around.

    i want a fantasy anime where people with bizzare disorders are given highlight, especially those concerning with thoughts and imagination. How would they translate a wizard who has that thing where they can see music as colors? those who sleepwalks as their other persona takes over? people who got maladaptive daydreaming

    the point of zenitsu's character is to show how he found a solution to being afraid and the trade offs are; He is usually late to join the fights despite his power, The lack of respect for him as a person showing why he can't grow as a character, His reliance on him being unconscious as a crutch showing why he doesn't grow as a character coz him being unconscious is a reliable way(in the meantime)for him to fight and leading him think he shouldn't change if his method works, People praising is power making him actually feel wanted and making him not want to change. All this is going on in the head of a coward who is despised by nearly everyone around him for how he acts, who failed to learn all but one form of his breathing style, who can only use that one breathing style when he is literally knocked out, then waking up to injuries he has no recollection of. I like his character and his rare moments of heroism despite how he acts and that the consequences are internal. His annoying character tropes are clever way to contrast his immense power and how he could be way more if he changed. His character is also realistic in the way he doesn't change because many people don't change just because they are wrong. The beauty of zenitsu's character is that he is in this cycle of "im weak" to "im actually strong" to "i dont remember being strong but people say i am" to "people dont like me except when i am strong" to "since im strong when asleep, i can make myself strong" to "i dont need to change since im already strong." Seeing him in this cycle makes him very interesting to watch.
