I very much agree that the whole point of making a live action is to make a movie. a movie that more or less follows movie rules in terms of shots etc. I cant understand why people want live action to look like anime, thats what you have anime for to look like anime. Adaptations of manga are the same as adaptations of dc and marvel comics - just normal movies

God what an underwatched channel. Deserves way more than 2k subs. At least for once i can actually say i was an og viewer before a channel got popular 😅

After watching the show myself, something that hit me was just how *effectively* they used their new medium- My two favorite parts of OPLA, were, genuinely, the cinematography and the acting. The cinematography was off the fucking charts at times, and the acting made the characters feel so unbelievably real and likable. For me, personally, those are two things you can't really strike *as much* in animation, most of the time.

OPLA strikes the perfect middle ground. It's not so different that I go "I don't know what I'm watching, but it wasn't One Piece.", but it's not so similar that I go "..Okay, but why don't I just go watch the anime?". It stands up on it's own as a series, and as a story it's trying to tell. It succeeds where other adaptations fail because it doesn't even feel like it's trying to *adapt* one piece, so much as it's just telling that story again, in a new medium, with new rules, and new writing.

Coming from someone who has consumed all three versions of the story, I fully agree. The live action was beautifully done, some of the script a little cringy but that's to be expected, the characters are goofy. I love and greatly appreciate the way that it allowed people who were so put off by the high episode count to enter into the world without needing to commit to the whole thing. It also gave non anime watchers an easily consumable medium a way to enter the world of anime and show them what the stories can be about. :)

Id always felt the problem with anime live action adaptations was theyd either go TOO much into the wild anime visuals or TOO little. One piece struck a perfect balance: the world was wild and wacky and wonderful. They didnt try to make it too "grounded in reality" as so many other studios have. But they also understood what whackiness would work in live action. The action lines in anime are cuz theyre adapted from manga... and as manga is a still medium theyre necessary to understanf action on a page. However in live action it feels like a visual overload and looks cheesy. OPLA was camp. And it did it amazingly.
As u mentioned in the video, the character writing took this from a good adaptation to what i would say is a GREAT one. It added the necessary depth to the characters that werent in the earlier parts of the anime and manga. Which i believe is in part due to the og demographic but more so OP being a mew story and Oda not being 100% sure of character arcs. Which i would like to say isnt a bad thing, its incredibly common for writers and other creatives to not know how their character will develop till they start writing and they begin to take a life of their own.
I had watched up until alabasta but was stuck on it for years. (life getting in the way of watching the show. Other pieces of media taking precedence) but OPLA made me pick it up again. I think its an amazing adaptation that understood what visual elements were needed to keep the whimsy and whacky of the One Pieve world but understood how to ground it in character writing and acting. Some ppl complained the actors didn't act "animated" enough... but i thought they hit the perfect mix of the twoo, especially Iñaki Godoy. His Luffy is just amazing.

I’m gonna say it people who try to make live action look like anime is bad. It looks corny as hell and it’s not embracing the media they’re filming for. Animation has different rules of story telling compared to live action. Anyone who has at least done a year of film study will know this. The One Piece live action is amazing, I love it, the cinematography is amazing, the choice of lens, angles, it’s all just, mwah! Ya know?? It took a franchise that was targeted for kids and turned it into a story that is more grounded and matured while still keeping those story beats and that’s honestly amazing

I watched the first 100 episodes of one piece during lockdown but never really enjoyed it, but eventually my friend convinced me to start reading it, I’m now 270 chapters in and really enjoying it. I haven’t watched the live action due to fears of it being bad but this has convinced me!

I think the pacing changes cannot be overstated. I started watching the anime over 10 years ago, and, even back then, it was daunting. It was daunting and it had some unnecessarily lengthy scenes or repetitions between one episode and the next episode's recap. The longer you watch the anime, the worse it gets as they stopped making filler content but desperately avoided going on hiatus... and that ultimately killed my desire to watch the anime.
It took like 1000 episodes, but I dare say that it got to a point where a 23-minute episode would have maybe 5 minutes of actual content. The live action was just pure joy to watch though. I'm really happy with how it turned out, but I think they'll have an even greater challenge going forward due to some characters...

this was a very fresh and nuanced take, pretty nice
as for your take on adaptations needing to adapt to the new medium and being different, the Martian did that, the book & the movie are very different but it's one of the only book adaptations that is as good as the book, just in different ways, for different audiences

@@PeyTalksAnime Yesss Project Hail Mary is my favourite of his, you can see how much he evolved as a writer. It's much more accessible as well, even my non scifi reading friends loved it and could not put it down.
To add to the original point, I think lots of anime also do that for manga adaptations - Mob Psycho 100, AoT, Demon Slayer too for that matter - we just are too used to anime doing anime things to a manga, but not so much for live action. Edge of Tomorrow comes to mind, it adapted the same source material as All You Need Is Kill, but it took advantage of the western hollywood context and what a great movie, one of the best scifi ones. I don't think we should put stories in a box, that they should only be made a certain way, it just loses its charm if it tries to be something else and people can tell

I also started watching the anime because of the live action! I had tried so hard a few years ago to start, but I couldn't get myself reeled in. Once the live action came out, I watched it all the way through and finally got to starting the anime again-- and am 100 episodes deep already

I grew up with the Anime and Manga; and have sadly grown out of it. I vaguely heard that there was a Life Action Adaption of One Piece, but wasn't really interested. Until I stumbled over your video. Now I am rather intrigued to give it a go. Thank you! Also, I just subscribed to your channel.

I am also so baffled that one piece of all things is what did it for me 🤣🤣

I agree... I also gave a try to the anime after finishing the LA, but 10 minutes in I was like "Nah... I am good" and turned it off. The thing is I watched some episodes on TV when it was coming out in the late 90s and at that time I found it to be the least appealing anime that was airing... And the LA was pretty compact and with clear direction where to go from there.
For me the most distracting part of the LA was the anime like hair color of some characters. In anime it is to distinguish different characters but in a LA it was out of place.
And one more thing... when I grew up there were a couple of TV shows about pirates and watching the first half of LA made me pretty nostalgic that these kind of shows are not made anymore... shows made for children and young adults but not everything is sugar and rainbows and a layer of reality and adult themes was present... not lecturing but giving the audience a chance to form their own ideals and opinions they take from the show into their lifes...

Lovely video, though it made me sad to hear such a show as One Piece described as 'content' to be 'consumed'. Storytelling media is more than content and should be lived through and experienced.

One piece is an outlier basically, managed to skip the curse of live actions, cause they respected the original source and had the original author and actually listened to him worked hand in hand, comparing to the ither projects where original creators are non existent or neglected to the borderlines. It seems that One piece live action production team has cracked the code, like *this* is how you make a good live action. But still they make all the same mistakes with the long awaited Avatar live action also by Netflix. It is somewhat infuriating. Like come on! 😢

whats sad is the live action just goes to show that you would love your 1st read thru on the manga or anime. you just want to "start" with every one else. if this ever could keep up the same energy and magic one piece has in anime or manga form you'd easily watch it to 1000 episodes. don't let this spoil the actual series. its a great summary of some interesting parts *not even the most important parts or people are here*

great is when they don't change major story and doesn't change character personality, and when they don't change merry from a cute sheep to a satanic goat.

I am a fan of One Piece, the animated series. I never got a chance to read any of the anime. I havent watched any of the recent anime adaptations like Cowbow Bebop, even though I also like that series (Mostly cus I don'thave a Netflix account anymore) But just looking at the clips you've provided, I see a LOT of care put into the actualization of different characters, and they are immediately recognizable without looking cring worthy. I have heard so many good things about the One Piece Live action from New Fans that I am eager to give it a watch. I had my doubts when I first started the show, and, in fact, HATED the artstyle, but my friend encouraged me to watch at least the first arc, and it was the story that pulled me and and the art style just became part of the quirky "charm" . Thanks for going over the differences that live action face vs drawn and animated mediums. I know it is hard but it's hard to know why.

no literally!!!! trying to do a shot-by-shot remake of an anime can work for like, a yt short or something- but trying to hold a viewer's attention for 8 hours with that same energy? there's suspension of disbelief and then there's disbelief rocketing up through the ozone layer. i would not be able to take it seriously or have a good time if i'm essentially watching 8 hours of overproduced cosplay (peace and love to those that partake. just not my thing, and not accessible to the majority of people.)

People watch their live action anime videos cus it's funny- cus it looks stupid. Characters look cool with their quirks and funny attire- you'll look silly, cus reality.
