  • here we are talking about Avatar the Last Airbender again. There have been a lot of comments on my other avatar videos. I ended up thinking a lot about them and decided I wanted to make a video about my thoughts. Avatar is so good man. Im glad I worked on this one, but it ended up being a lot of work. Hope yall enjoy it

    Something that I remember from Zuko’s final fight was that he was able to consistently maintain his base with his feet. Which was something Iroh repeatedly scolded Zuko to do during his Agni Kai with Admiral Zhao back in season one.

      Great find. That one shot of Zuko's feet show the writers/animators knew exactly what they were doing.
      Ik we've all done it before, but to just take a minute and appreciate the greatness of this show.

    In the Last Agni Kai, Zuko saved Katara with a water-bending move (lightning redirection), and Katara saved Zuko beating Azula with a fire-bending move (heat breath)

      I think it is, she even breathes out her nose the same way Zuko did, which isn't usually necessary for water benders to convert ice into water.

    I do agree. Zuko’s final fight is not just against his rival sister but also his growth in himself. He had the best character development of the series. Zuko and Azula also represented differing views for the future of the Fire Nation.
    Because even if Aang won, if Azula won the fight against Zuko/Katara, it would be difficult for any change to happen in the nation.

    I can't believe that after so many years, so many rewatches of this show, so many video essays about the show in general and even more specifically, I'm still blown away and learning new things... I never connected Katara's waterbending technique at the end to her first real fight with Zuko.

    I agree that the Zuko/Azula fight is the better fight in the finale, but more for the emotional weight than anything else. Don't get me wrong, the Oozai/Aang fight is everything a final fight between two powerful characters should be and definitely exceeded the high expectations set during the 3 seasons of build up, but at the end of the day it's a fight between two strangers.
    But we've gotten to know Zuko and Azula over the course of the show and to see their sibling relationship come to this tragic point is heartbreaking and beautifully captured in how the fight is shown on screen.

    What's interesting about him going into the Avatar State as a self-defense response is actually something that's been played with before in the series; we see him immediately start to enter the Avatar State upon realizing that the Airbenders really DID die, all the way back in Season 1, for example.

    I used to favour the Zuko vs. Azula final battle just because it was a little more unexpected and I found the characters to be a bit more interesting. But, as time has gone on, and i've watched both battles more and more, I prefer Aang vs. Ozai.
    It's the Avatar in their full "glory" and Ozai at his most powerful. The VA performance from Mark Hamil is just so good both when Ozai possesses the advantage and the disadvantage.
    I put "glory" in quotes because what I believe is the strongest element (intended) of the battle is the seeming ambiguity of the impact of the Avatar's power. It was shown (and mentioned) throughout the series as "awesome", striking awe into onlookers and opponents. Now, is that awe-struck feeling positive or negative? Throughout the series, It (the Avatar state) was always used for justified reasons and to stop "evil", making it "good" indirectly, but in a vacuum it's presented as this terrifying, destructive force.
    And finally, what makes this battle so great is the music. It's ambiguous between triumph and horror imo and it perfectly complements the Avatar at his most powerful and most terrifying (just look at Ozai's face at the end).

      Rewatch the end of book 2 when they are fighting in the catacombs he unlocks his final chuckra

    • @timocruz510
      @timocruz510 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, in the Crossroads of Destiny he "let's go" of Katara and finally opens the Chuckra and masters the Avatar state. But then he essentially dies and the Avatar state is lost. Until it's seemingly revitalized by him hitting his back in the final battle. Is it kinda contrived? Yes. But it's also what the people wanted to see, so I kinda like it.
      My issue is that you see Roku master the Avatar state and he has a wife and children. So what really is the price of mastering the state? Aang and the Guru crack it up to be this big deal but it seems Roku could master the state and also have and attach himself to a loving family. Seems a bit inconsistent, but hey even this series can't be absolutely perfect.

      My interpretation of why getting hit on his scar worked was because that was the point that broke his connection through and when he got hit there it snapped the chakra back to form so to speak.

    to add on to aang’s lack of mastery with the other elements from lack of training, i dont know if others have pointed out, but maybe the ball of death was a way for aang to compensate for his lack of mastery with a display of pure raw power - to form that ball, he not only compressed rock, which is hard enough, but also compressed water, something that is basically impossible in standard pressure/temperature conditions.

    It's clear that Azula when fighting Zuko is ready to kill him but people probably don't realize Zuko is trying to kill her too.

    • @bradleylewis3438
      @bradleylewis3438 ปีที่แล้ว

      If Zuko was trying to kill her, he wouldn’t have let her get up to start lightning bending. If he did spam he used on Aang when he teamed in the Basing Se Catacombs on a SC Enhanced level, Azula would be covered in 3rd degree burns at the very least.

    I always liked Zuko, especially because of iroh and, i always hated Azula but, on the end fight aang wasn't supposed to awaken avatar state, it was entirely on accident also the fight wasn't ended with avatar powers but, aang's willpower and resolve. I would say it is one of the best and most thematic fights in all of anime.

    So there were 4 over all fights going on. White lotus taking back earth capital.. team avatar against air ships. Zuko and katara against azula and aang vs earth king. Non of them hit me in the heart strings like the zuko azula fight. The music, the colors, and brother taking after mother and azula taking after father. Omg i will always remember their fight the most. But aang taking away the firelords bending? Oh that was the icing on the cake. In my top 3 animated shows

  • @masona7219
    @masona7219 ปีที่แล้ว

    Aang gains access to the avatar state because he locked the final chakra at the end of book two. When he starts the reopening process underneath ba sing se it is locked by Azula's lightning. The reopening of that wound (of which was healed by the spirit water before the chakra could flow) opens aangs final chakra (i believe there is a sound similar to/ reminiscent of the chakra opening sound at the end of book two when he impales on the rock.) The opening of the eartly attachment chakra is the moment aang isn't scared anymore. It is the moment he not only masters the elements but his own spirit and self control. You said it yourself early in the fight he is scared and running. But the mastery of his spirit upon the reopening of the wound (and furthermore final chakra) allows him to move past the internal state he was frozen in by azulas lightning and take the final step in his journey.

    • @masona7219
      @masona7219 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also argue that the reopening of this wound and chakra are a direct result of aangs timidity in the 1st stage of the fight, furthermore id argue that timidity is a result of his spirit/ chakras being frozen and locked since the end of book two.

    really well produced video but the criticism falls flat, avatar is too good. You said you're pretty much just nitpicking but the vibe of the vid is like there is some giant issue
    feels too negative, you can celebrate the show instead of trying to dog on what is a nearly perfect series
    avatar state and spirit bending are far from deus ex machinas
