With Ishigami’s backstory, an important thing that western viewers will not understand without context is that the girl’s boyfriend’s threat of putting out shaming photos was potentially life-ending for her. Japanese schools are socially vicious in a way condoned by the culture. Anyone outcast, bullied or ashamed will be targeted for bullying and shaming constantly, often pushed to “self ending” purposely. And the teachers see this as a necessary venting of negativity and expression of social stability. Bullying others is an institution of Japanese culture in a way that would be not just unacceptable in the modern west but borderline criminal.
Yk rewatching this some of these points actually faulter with manga knowledge (not about why its good but info not yet mentioned in the anime) however still it was actually very well written! Good job :)
At a certain point though, could you not say a manga and an anime are two separate entities/canons, despite one being based off the other? You could say we're pretty blessed to experience adaptations be so incredibly faithful to their source material, in cases such as with anime from manga/novels. In many other cases, standards can be very different. Hell, even anime a decade or two ago, but especially longer ago, didn't feel a similar amount of need to adhere so closely to the source. To me, then, just because anime in more recent years have gotten a lot more faithful and accurate to the source, it doesn't mean they _are_ the same entity. What happens in the manga could probably be considered canon to the anime if the anime doesn't contradict it, but, if the anime never showed it, how could an anime-only be scrutinized for holding a certain opinion just because it conflicts with something that was shown or said in the manga? Personally, while having extra knowledge from the source can probably be a plus, I don't think it's the be-all-end-all. Kaguya-sama: Love is War simply is the anime it is. It showed what it showed, didn't show what it didn't show, said what it said, and didn't say what it didn't say. Any conclusion derived from that is still a valid conclusion, in my eyes. I wouldn't say information from the source would falter any of these points. At least, not as heavily as you might imply.
@Querez8504 No I agree with you, it's just that some of these points actually change with information from the manga that the anime doesn't reach yet (please continue A-1 🙏) but anyway I'm not discrediting his points, all I was saying was if the anime is continued and the source was adapted some of the points would change or be wrong. Obviously though, like you said, we can't fault anyone because the anime hasn't got that far yet.
Amazing video, especially that last stretch when building up to and covering the film. Your point about the difference between longing and love was spot on and its so true that the movie dials in on that too. It's what really elevated the story to the next level. It's what makes the rest of the manga so good too; seeing Miyuki and Kaguya continue to work together as a team to navigate everything that comes their way. You much of a manga reader? I'd recommend it cause who knows if the anime will continue to adapt it.
Ive recently been reading more manga. I was never super into it but at some point you catch up to too many series in production. Then eventually you acclimate because some of the stories are so good. I'll probably start reading kaguya sama tonight actually
!!! Kaguya content !!! In 2024 !!! Thanks so much for this great video :D to anyone reading this who finished the anime, I highly recommend reading the manga since we might not get a season 4 ^^
Round of applause! As someone who rarely watches romance anime (nothing against them, and there are a few I love, like "Ouran High School Host Club") this one still managed to become one of my favorite animes. You've done an excellent job explaining why it's so compelling, and now I love it even more than before. Can't wait for a fourth season!
my favorite part of this video is from 56:27 to 57:47, most of my favorite pieces of media feel like this, i love how you described it very well done. also this whole channel is rapidly becoming my favorite, if not there already.
I love how you analyze stories. I love the show too. Its been a while since I finished the show since after season 2 I picked up the manga and only binge-watched the rest of the anime as it came (even though i enjoyed a lot of the newer anime content more than the manga). It's probably my favorite romcom however I had pushed it to the back of my mind for quite a while. I am so happy to stumble upon your channel and videos cuz you basically let me relive the entire kaguya experience all over again and it has made my entire week. Hope you keep making these and keep exploring Frieren, with the youtube treating you well cuz you deserve all the praise you get. This was the best story summary of kaguya I have ever watched, and probably the first one that gave me a new perspective beyond the things I had already picked up on. (and yes for anyone reading, the ova is filler non cannon and I will not hear you out)
Omg! this video is 1 hour long? I just finish watching it and didn't notice... It certainly carry a lot of weight that your writing for the videos is comprehensive and engaging when your channel revolves around storytelling =D Thanks a lot for the hard work!
Absolutely loved this video. The character relationships web in and of itself was a delight to see expressed in visual space. But the character arc analysis took it to a whole new level I've not explored in the two times I've watched through the show. You've given me a lot for a third viewing.
This video is an absolute masterpiece of an analysis, I generally love character analysis and trope talk in general, but your tone and editing are top notch
Holy shit man. Simply phenomenal essay. Really loved your take on what makes this anime goated. You probably have watched, but doesn't hurt to say. Mothers Basement also did a very comprehensive essay about Kaguya. You should. check it out as well.
Thanks for the compliment! I think I tried to avoid mother's basements video when I was working on mine to not be influenced by their POV. I'll check it out now that this one is done
Amazing work, and I've never agreed so much with a point like I did with everything you said about how *most* love stories end up after a confession. It was the reason I thought I disliked romance in medias for a loooong time and Kaguya-Sama is part of those really refreshing shows on that regard. Just discovered your channel with the female protagonist vid before this and I'll be tagging along for more :)
The reason Hayasaka has worked as a maid for Kaguya since childhood despite child labour laws is that Kaguya-sama's Japan isn't quite real Japan, it's an alternate version where the Zaibatsu conglomerates still exist and have the power to do pretty much whatever they want. I don't think Hayasaka would be able to work as a maid in real Japan.
Uh! You sold me on watching Love is War again! =D I started season 1 and, after a few episodes, I thought... "It's fun, but just like typical romance, it's going to drag on, and nothing will change for the sake of the joke." But it sounds like the story actually builds up to something, which is exciting! Recently, I started watching the new anime adaptation of Ranma 1/2. I was enjoying it, but I stopped as soon as I found out that, even though the story ends, there's no resolution to the main conflict. It seems like the story worked hard to keep things static for the sake of the jokes No character growth, no change in dynamics.
amazing stuff. I originally started watching Kaguya-Sama after watching Mother Basement's analysis of it that was over an hour long, and now I finally found a worthy successor to that video. 10/10, just like Kaguya :)
One of the ways I sum up Kaguya-sama is "Nothing is as it seems and your first impression is wrong". Every character has layers of deapth that gets intentionally mislead at first. Kaguya is your prim and proper perfect girl...except she is sooooo far from perfect it's hillarious how inept she can he when it comes to common sense. Chika is your typical cute and cairing bubbly girl except she can be extremely selfish and self centered yet also at first she seems dumb...and she is in a way, she is also very competent in a LOT of things, not a klutz you would expect. The lost goes on, every character has deapth.
This is an unbelievably good video but my main takeaway from it was you need to watch Kill La Kill. (Just stumbled across your content and this was the easiest sub of my life, keep up the great work brother.)
Thoughtful and substantive perspectives are scarce online especially in anime reviews, as I got fed up of frivolous anime reviews built with comedic interjections and sound effects. I came here through your friren video, and please keep adding stuff like these
You don't always need great writing if you want to have your story focused mostly on one place. You can also write a tragedy that respects the location unit, the time unit and the action unit.
Ishigami’s story genuinely hurt me. Why? Because the reason I spend all day sleeping and all night watching anime and gaming is because I wanted to do the right thing, but ended up hated by everyone for it. So bro is literally me.
"Go to hell" is excessively mean and ill-intended for Ishigami. Even if it's not literal, that line still evokes telling someone to go to a place of eternal suffering. That's the last place Ishigami would send Kyoko to, we're talking about the guy who let himself be known as a stalker just so her boyfriend wouldn't hurt her. In the original line he just tells her to shut up.
37:54 i have to disagree with that. Hurting kyoko or not, ishigami should've told what happenned between him and her boyfriend. If ishigami trully grateful for kyoko's help. She went and meet him, confront him because she inherently doubted her boyfriend. Wouldn't it just make him pushed kyoko to let that punk tramples over her? Good friend or grateful people dont let the one that good to them fall into a pit. I personally rather be the b*** that tells the facts (truth is a matter of persepective) and be hated than the goody 2 shoes that let someone i care about falls into a pit without jumping with eyes wide open, just not to "hurt them". because we cannot forced someone descisions.
3:49 I had to leave an angry comment because I think Chika is the most unlikeable members of the cast. I really don't like when self-centredness is played as a funny character trait, and Fujiwara does this all the time. To be fair she is still likeable (unlike for example Osana Najimi from Komi-san), but a lot less so than nearly everyone else in this manga.
A video essay of a beloved story that isn't simply a plot summary? This is my lucky day!
Had to reupload this because of weird copyright stuff
Oof, unfortunate
haha thanks for all the nice comments on the previous upload
@@PeyTalksAnime No problem man, I'll be back once I've watched the movie
The reupload let me find it :D
fantastic *mwah* 10/10 *chef kiss*

@Querez8504 yeah it's true they do somewhat falter off skipped content but nowhere near as much as stuff later on. 🫡

Thank you so much for making this video!!

Ian's narration was the best thing out of this amazing show
I love long essays like this and the Austrian psychologist woukd have been a rad addition, actually
oh this a really good video

Underrated video
what a solid video
SUPER appreciate you including dub clips. This anime has straight up one of the best English dubs ever. 🤣🤣

These video essays always freak me out with the dub...
Dubs will probably get better one of these years. Put the anime through an ai mouth change thing and víolá!
To me it's not Freud ego id superego, but Transactional Analysis Child, Adult and Parent :)
