Can I Find a Romantasy Book I Love? 🖤 Weekly Reading Vlog
In this weekly reading vlog I am reacting to popular fantasy romance books to answer the question: Do I even like romantasy? There are so many stereotypes in this BookTok favorite genre, and I am trying to decide if it can be for me. What works? What makes me dislike a popular romantasy book? We are going to find out in this weekly reading vlog.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's the thing about epic fantasy. You stated in this that it's making you question whether or not epic fantasy is for you. Reading epic fantasy requires a skill set of being able to pick up on off-hand world building remarks like little puzzle pieces and piecing that puzzle together, and when you're given so much information in such a short span of time it can be really challenging. You're not stupid you just haven't developed that skill yet. I felt a lot like you when I first started reading epic fantasy. The skill of picking up those pieces and putting the puzzle together gets easier and easier the more you read epic fantasy. Your take on Shallan saddens me a little because the reason why she's regressing is also the reason she's progressing. DID is a disorder that develops out of severe trauma. I'm pretty sure its been explained in the book by now, but she has had trauma induced amnesia for many years and when she bonded with pattern she's starting to remember but psychologicalically she's not ready to remember so her other persona is protecting her until she's ready. Sandersons entire point with the core cast of characters is to explore and empathize with people that have various mental disabilities, for example Kaladin has depression. As someone with my own mental illness this aspect of the story is really special to me. Sanderson has given us all an opportunity to step into the shoes of someone we may not have had the opportunity to understand before, to empathize with someone so different from ourselves and it hurts my heart to hear you complain about someone tackling their trauma as "annoying". I've spent my whole life being, "annoying" to everyone around me because of my ADHD. Shallan is becoming aware of her disability, and one thing about it is that it never goes away. People with these struggles spend their entire lives overcoming them. Sanderson has said in his own words that he's using these characters to try and learn and empathize with these disabilities and disorders, maybe reflect and try and take that journey with him.

You're not late to the party at all! Thank you for the well thought out response and WOW you gave me a lot to think about! I have been pondering your comments ever since I first read this. I appreciate your perspective on Shallon and also advice for epic fantasy overall, it will stay with me in the back of my mind as I continue reading the Stormlight Archives! Happy reading my friend!

Such a fun experiment! I also feel like I am still stumbling around in the dark when it comes to romantasy, there are some hidden gems but there's also so much of the same old tropey stuff... and yes, whiny audiobook narrators can definitely make the whole things just crash and burn hahah 🥲🤣 I personally bounced off From Blood and Ash at the time, but I think that may have been a mood thingy. I am still very intrigued about Plated Prisoner, especially hearing your positive thoughts on the progression in that sequel! Some that have worked super well for me and that I would recommend are Reign & Ruin by JD Evans, The Undertaking of Hart & Mercy by Megan Bannen (though this is more a cozy fantasy romcom), Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai (urban vibes), UMBRA by Amber Toro (scifantasy romance), Entreat Me and Radiance by Grace Draven and Swordheart and the Saint of Steel series by T. Kingfisher! 🥰

This was a GREAT review spot on. This is exactly how I felt while reading it and after . Totally agree you have to go into it knowing it’s NOT a love story, and it’s not a dark romance . Interestingly enough, there is really no love involved. I agree with everything that you said that it is about grooming and gives you an insight and how it can happen and how someone can be so easily manipulated. I also found it interesting that Vanessa could know certain actions were wrong and she was not into it but she continue to come back for more. She is the victim, but it is crazy how she never saw herself that way. You have to go into this book as if it is a lesson and at moments your thinking how could that happen but you find yourself feeling like you could also be manipulated in that way. I agree this was a great read, but you will be uncomfortable, and that is the point .Definitely have to be in the right headspace.

Great wrap up! I ended up really enjoying chain gang all stars, but I totally understand why you had issues with it, I had some similar struggles while reading, especially with all the POV’s. I also read edgedancer in July and pretty much had the same thoughts haha. I’m planning on starting Oathbringer today and I’m simultaneously excited and terrified! And I’m so glad you loved the Neapolitan novels, I really want to get to those soon 😊 My 5 star reads in July were Just For The Summer, The Things We Cannot Say, and Parable of the Sower (well, 4.75 but close enough)!
