- For my May 2024 TBR I am reading nautical books all month! I have been keeping a list of all the ocean themed books across all genres: non-fiction, fantasy, horror, romance. I have been saving them for May 2024 because I have an epic nautical vacation planned and this themed reading will really help set the ambiance for a great trip!

I went on a cruise when I was like 14 with my grandparents to Alaska. It was cool but I spent most of the time in the cabin because they had to nap multiple times a day and then they only wanted to go to the fancy restaurants. As a 14 year old I wanted to go to The Burger Joint and the buffet lol The Deep by Alma Katsu was my favorite book of 2022 but I'm also a Titanic fanatic.
Oh man that would definitely set an unfavorable impression of cruising! It is too bad they didn't let you run around alone - there isn't much trouble a 14 year old could get into on the ship lol You are making me think I should give The Deep (Titanic version) a try!
What a fun idea, I have The Wager and Our Wives under the sea. I found A Haunting In The Artic on Everand. I listened to Voyage Of The Damned and liked it. I love books about ships and shipwrecks. I also love cruising have been on about 7. I usually go by myself so these are good holidays for solo, always sail to and back no planes.
Ooh you’re the first person I’ve met that has read Voyage of the Damned, so I’m thrilled you liked it! Wow you are a cruising expert! What’s your favorite cruise line?
@@JAKandtheBookStack P and O . It took me awhile to get into the book, but glad I kept listening. Dangerous Woman by Hope Adams is good, its a mystery on a convict ship of woman going to Australia. I paired it with a non fiction The Floating Brothel.
You should also consider The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton. I’ve heard great things.
Great recommendation thank you! I don’t think I’ve heard of that one before 🌊
A Haunting in the Arctic is incredible. It's definitely a difficult read though! I love everything thst CJ Cooke writes!
I don't think I have tried anything by CJ Cooke so this should be the first! Ok if you second that it is a difficult read I will be sure I am emotionally prepared... definitely not a fun vacation read ON the boat it sounds like.
I loved A Letter to the Luminous Deep. It’s a new book by Sylvie Cathrall- kind of cozy fantasy with some romance and nautical themed.
This sounds right up my alley! Thank you for the rec… I wonder if I can squeeze this one in!
I was suppose to go on a cruise but then I got pneumonia and I haven't had a desire to try again. Hope you love A Ship of Bones and Teeth but I'd understand if you didn't. It's a fun time though. Love a good sea adventure book.
Oh man, I’ll lower my expectations for the book 😝 what a bummer to get sick and miss a vacation!
Hooray for Red Seas Under Red Skies! I think it helps not to think of the Gentleman Bastards plots as super serious (through there are some poignant, heavy moments). The missions are always a little wild and over-the-top, but they are so fun. The A Haunting in the Artic cover looks gorgeous!
I’ve never been on a cruise. I don’t know why the idea doesn’t appeal to me though I tend to love nautical books. I loved your Iceland photos! Have a wonderful time! 🧜♀️🌊
I agree the plot isn't serious... but what happened to the gang really threw me for a loop when the rest of the book had a light tone. I wasn't ready! Hopefully I can give you your fill of the cruise experience through my video 😂
@@JAKandtheBookStack That was sad, wasn't it! Bug! 😭
@@Johanna_reads I think that is what killed my enjoyment of it - the tone was SO fun I was not prepared for the emotional damage! It has taken me two years to forgive Scott Lynch!
@@JAKandtheBookStack ok, that's totally understandable! 👌🏼
Have a fun cruise!! I've never been on one and I'm not sure if I want to.
Thank you! I can see that... I don't mind cruises but I don't think you are missing too much... besides the unlimited food, which is usually amazing.
Hope you have a blast on your cruise!! The only cruise I have been on was when we went to Egypt, part of it was a cruise up the Nile which was really nice. The Twisted Tales are so fun!! A Letter to the Luminous deep is a super wholesome cozy fantasy mystery that takes place in and on the sea, it is told in an epistolary format which can be divisive, but it was so much fun. And yay Voyage of the Damned!!! It is very Agatha Christie-esque and was a ton of fun.
Ok you sold me on Voyage of the Damned for sure - I love Agatha Christie! I need to check out A Letter to the Luminous Deep, I love wholesome cozy vibes mixed in. A Nile cruise sounds like the ULTIMATE. I think you just added something to my bucket list...
@@JAKandtheBookStack yaaaas. It’s Agatha Christie but also queer. The one drawback is the main character is A LOT so if you find them endearing early on you’re in for a good time, if you find them frustrating or annoying it could be an overall miss. A Letter I think literally came out this week from orbit, it’s a mystery as two people are becoming correspondents trying to find out to their siblings who have vanished in an accident, so you get to see the correspondence between the missing siblings and see their sweet budding romance it was very cute. I think it might be even better on audio to really hear the different voices of the letters
Float Plan was very cute! Definitely a great beach read. Island of the Lost was good (definitely how you described it with respect to the two groups) but leaned a little dry for me b/c the author relies a ton on journal entries. Endurance by Alfred Lansing is my favorite boat-story of all time but I loveeee a good shipwreck book. I'm not a big cruise fan but I hope you have a great time!!
Ooh I need to look into Endurance if it’s an all time favorite! It’ll be interesting to see if ship wreck books trigger me ON a ship, but I’m optimistic of todays technology 😆 thanks for the insight with Island of the Lost, it helps to have the right expectations
❤📚❤️ Great idea and books sound good. Life of Pi was good.
I just read Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing. It was great.
I also loved Grania: She-King of the Irish Seas by Morgan Llywelyn. Both are based on true stories.
Enjoy your trip. I've never been on a cruise.
Ooh thanks I need to check out these recommendations! I love that they are based on true stories, that really fascinates me. I am really curious to see how the first time cruisers like the trip :)
@@JAKandtheBookStack I hope you all have a fabulous time!
@@starlasell5698 thank you!!
You should check out Price of Freedom by AC crispin a Captain Jack Sparrow saga before the Curse of the Black Pearl ❤
WOW where had that book been my whole life - it sounds amazing! Thank you
It seems the big gorilla (whale) in the room is "Moby Dick." 😸😆 Not a stodgy classic but a very eccentric and sometimes hilarious book, it was a flop when it came out and left Herman Melville to work as a customs officer and write unpublished poetry. But it survived to modern times based on its sheer strangeness 👍
Wow that’s cool, I didn’t know that! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that as a nautical book for the month! Although the length makes it unlikely I’d get to in in May
The Rivers Solomon Version of The Deep isn’t really “killer” mermaids. It’s like Lois Lowery’s The Giver with mermaids, and queer.
Ok that’s even better!! Thanks for setting my expectations for the story so I know what I’m getting into! I’m so intrigued
HAVE YOU READ 'DUMA KEY' BY STEPHEN KING BECAUSE IT'S THE BEST NAUTICAL HORROR EVER (very heavy though)
No I had no idea it was nautical!! I wonder if I can squeeze it in, I own a copy! Thanks so much for the Recommendation
@@JAKandtheBookStack you are welcome. It's my favourite by King, it's very creepy, a slow burn, emotional horror novel that's also very artistic and poetic. 🙂
