  • In this weekly reading vlog I am reacting to popular fantasy romance books to answer the question: Do I even like romantasy? There are so many stereotypes in this BookTok favorite genre, and I am trying to decide if it can be for me. What works? What makes me dislike a popular romantasy book? We are going to find out in this weekly reading vlog.

I think a recommendation video of "romantasy without moronically abrasive women" sounds excellent 😄! I would also struggle with that character type! A long while back, I read "The Raven and the Dove" by Kaitlyn Davis. I didn't continue the series, but I really loved it at the time! It's a Tristan and Isolde retelling.

Ooh I need to look into that one! Seriously this trend with FMCs needs to fizzle out now! They’re all so similar

I really enjoyed From Blood and Ash but didn't like the sequel so I didn't continue with the series. 😬 I'm still really looking for a solid, amazing Romantasy. The last romantasy I really enjoyed was The Shepherd King duology. Great video!!

Thanks! I’ll need to check that one out because maybe it will work for me too!

Ill be curious if you read the Flesh and Fire series by Armentrout- that one worked for me a lot more. I struggle deeply with Poppy.
    In regards to names:
so many romantasies have characters with similar names- Rhys being the big one or Rowan.

YES the names!!! Whhhy are these all so similar? It’s hard to layer that in stereotypical characteristics that are also repeated

Gold has been my least favorite of the series so far.

Oh man, maybe it was just the timing for me as to why I enjoyed it so much, rather than it being actually good 😆

@JAKandtheBookStack it definitely had a different vibe from all the others so I can see why if you weren't loving the other books it would be better.

Empire of Storms was my favorite of the series you are definitely going against the grain feeling like ToG got worse with every book lol and rated most people's fav of the series 2 stars lolol not the moronically abrasive female main character, truly ruins so many stories for me too

@@RodgersReads so far in EOS Aelin is not bugging me as much! Much more strategy and teamwork. And the multiple POVS is working for me!! Here’s hoping…

Such a fun experiment! I also feel like I am still stumbling around in the dark when it comes to romantasy, there are some hidden gems but there's also so much of the same old tropey stuff... and yes, whiny audiobook narrators can definitely make the whole things just crash and burn hahah 🥲🤣
I personally bounced off From Blood and Ash at the time, but I think that may have been a mood thingy. I am still very intrigued about Plated Prisoner, especially hearing your positive thoughts on the progression in that sequel!
Some that have worked super well for me and that I would recommend are Reign & Ruin by JD Evans, The Undertaking of Hart & Mercy by Megan Bannen (though this is more a cozy fantasy romcom), Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai (urban vibes), UMBRA by Amber Toro (scifantasy romance), Entreat Me and Radiance by Grace Draven and Swordheart and the Saint of Steel series by T. Kingfisher! 🥰

Ooh I need to take these recs seriously because it sounds like we are in the same boat with the genre being difficult. I loved Swordheart too! And you’re completely right there has to be a specific mood (and level of patience) for romantasy

@@JAKandtheBookStack Hope you enjoy them if you give some of them a shot!! We definitely seem to have very big overlap in our tastes, and I love that for us hahah
