Late Side-Step Landing - Poor Decision? | Matt Guthmiller Debrief
This is a review of a video I was requested to take a look at on a youtube comment of a flight instructor taking a late side step approach decision.
We will take a look at the decision making process used and debrief whether the manoeuvre was flown in a safe manner.
These aviation influencers who film their flying, particularly the instructors have a responsibility to promote safety. Do you think that is happening in this video?

Wtf is the beacon 😂 love it
I've been practicing the NDB approaches for UHMD and UHMA... This looks like an absolute blast to try out. The LRRS locations certainly were selected in some spicy locations 😅
This was a fun approach!
I was able to get the DC-6 in on my second go with some questionable visibility. The first one I can blame the sim ATC since they assigned an altitude that put me straight into a mountain haha 😅
Ironically, that's my neck of the woods. I live in Valdosta lol
It’s a Bonanza, not a swept wing jet. No aileron input will cause the wing to stall (even a half scale deflection like you see there and might in just about any gusty crosswind). The stall horn going off in the flare isn’t unusual for any landing. I don’t think it’s a poor decision to elect to do something you know the plane is perfectly capable of (like landing on a 1300’ runway for instance), but it certainly would have been to not go around had we not been on the ground by the 1000ft marks, even if we could stop in 700 or 800ft because then there would be too little margin left.
I’ll tell you what, when you’ve matured a bit and have a few thousand more hours under your belt, we can have this conversation again and see what you think then, if you make it that far. Until then I can only recommend that you consider carefully what you’re uploading for people with less experience and skill levels to see. The people who are impressed by this and the people who are trying to learn from you and other aviation content online will have a large overlap. Something to think about…
@@Taylair no pilot should go out and try something just because they saw it on TH-cam, just like they wouldn't attempt a demonstration at an airshow. How many thousands of hours do you have under your belt anyway?
That's not really how it works if someone considers you an authority on something or looks up to you. Not sure how much teaching you've done, but you can spend a lifetime trying to enforce safe good decision making, and the second a student sees you do something "cool" or cutting a corner of some sort, that's what they want to copy. I've not totalled up my hours since last year but somewhere around 7.5 - 8k now and have had people I know lose their lives and/or waste perfectly good airframes because they made a poor decision when there was a much safer alternative available. It's almost always the decision making that gets people and this is where the training lacks any real substance. Perhaps you might have a decent platform to improve this gaping hole in GA training with the large following you have.
Matt did a cool thing or two, he went around the world. But he seems to have caught the invincibility delusion. I hope he realizes this.
This is why I stopped watching his channel. It's entertaining, no doubt, but given the number of dangerous and reckless things I've seen him do, it felt wrong to encourage him to make more content like this by giving him more views. Sadly, I'm not sure this side step landing is even the worst one.
I haven't gone digging... I don't think I want to!
@@Taylair Yeah - for sure. There was one he did in his L-39 where he was low on fuel, but decided to try to weave his way through storm build-ups, rather than turn back or make an extra stop to fill up. Not near as dramatic to watch as this landing, but the same reckless decision making. Yikes!
Been watching him for a while and he seems to be getting more and more ragged with his flying. Seems to be only a matter of time until it bites him. Hard.
I only heard of him a couple of days ago when someone asked me to look at this scenario. The couple of things I watched gave me Trevor Jacob vibes...
I agree, it pains me to see how reckless he is becoming. Compare him to other aviation youtubers like FlightChops who have a very safety-first mindset and it looks downright dangerous.

Teardrop entry. But I think parallel will also do the trick because you do the same 15 degree turn after passing the NDB and stay in the protected area all the time. What do you think?
It’s a tear drop for me
Thanks for sharing. Well done. Seems I learn something all the time. I learned two things from you in this video: setting baro mins from the TIMR/REF window ( I always set it when setting up the approach) and another way to use FLC ( I always pressed the FLC, then UP UP UP a few times which reduces the airspeed for the climb, then powered up.)
Glad it was helpful!

I would do a teardrop
Parallel??

Lazy magenta liners!
So you’re an instructor as an airline pilot. So you must have TRE or TRI qualification?
What happens if both engines catch fire?
I work in a hospital. Medicine is inexact. Things go wrong all the time. There are security cameras in my workplace, but they are for security only, being in the public areas, waiting rooms, corridors, etc. There are no cameras or audio recorders for consultations. We don't think that either doctors or patients want such recordings to be taken, but we haven't asked them. This is the same in almost all professions: teaching, law, psychology, architecture, etc. Road vehicle crashes cause much harm and result from a currently private activity (driving), which is not recorded at all. The argument that cockpits should be videotaped should start with the question: where do things go wrong most? People dying in hospitals, buildings collapsing (eg: Champlain towers south), everyone driving their private cars. Then start videotaping the most risk-prone situations first and video in the safest places last. First will be video in your car recording your actions, and sending data to the authorities. The cockpit will be last on the list.
Actually it’s very common for truckers to be recorded by their companies, and most buses do too (at least where I am). They will often have both a dash cam and a driver cam.
The problem is, you are using the exact same excuses that the police unions used to try to prevent officers from wearing body cameras, that it would cause safety issues and make officers act differently, yet every day we have new videos of police who know they are being recorded, committing crimes and violating citizens rights. Thos excuses don't fly. I have a dash cam that records the cockpit of my plane, and it had never once caused me a safety issue.
On your first point, you are pretty much saying that the cameras haven't changed anything in the police... So maybe it hasn't worked so well. It's a different situation anyway, the cop camera is filming direct communication and confrontations with the general public. Like I said in the video, the aircraft is monitoring and reporting every single thing we do, this is much more useful and objective information than looking at a limited view from a camera. You have complete personal control over the dash cam so the comparison isn't valid in my opinion.
Cameras only to identify people? Are you ignorant about what cameras are for or you are just ignoring other safety uses on purpose? Pilots are infalible when it comes to safety? I think maybe you are an entitled pilot, that values his privacy over other safety considerations, like making YOU completely responsible of your decisions, for example, because we know exactly what you did or did not. .I think it is because pilots like you that we DO need those cameras.
I don't think there's anything wrong with privacy, at home or at work. If you disagree and think privacy is just entitlement, feel free to livestream your entire house and your office to the internet, you won't find me doing it though. Pilots are more monitored than any other job already even without video recorders. Video would mostly be used to go after individual pilots in law suits for money, with bs like our expert thinks he did this tiny bs technicality wrong, and when you ask 10 pilots about it you get 5 different answers. But i think cheesy has the most on point answer, it's pure jealousy, you can hear it. Misery loves Company.
Thank you for your comment, I'll be sure to hand all my pilot licences back as I clearly don't deserve them
I agree with @gajofre. YOU are a biased, entitled “pilot”.
@@Taylairhave you handed it back yet, or were you lying about that as well? Do you think you’re better than the rest of us?
@@Aviationnerd857get bent, loser
Do you think that the AQP training does good, and in this respect?
Better than the "checkride manoeuvre" way of doing things, yes
*cough* germanwings *cough*
What happened on the Germanwings?
I’ll tell you exactly what happened….oh wait I can’t….there weren’t any cameras! We need Flight Deck Cameras!!
If you think the cockpit cameras are going to be released for our viewing pleasure on TH-cam, your head is so far up your arse that you shouldn't be driving a cab, much less flying a commercial jetliner.
Did you even listen to any of the points I raised?
Bro doesn't like being filmed everywhere. He's jealous that pilots aren't being filmed. His solution isn't get rid of cameras in the workplace, it's "you should suffer like I suffer" and that's pretty pathetic. He's just whining the whole time about "the rest of us are recorded at work so you should be too." Weak sauce
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having video recordings which can be stored and reviewed in the case of a crash. I think this could improve our ability to learn from accidents. I don’t see how it’s that different from having voice recordings reviewed in the case of accidents. It’s not constant monitoring, just reviewed when things go wrong.
I think it would create a distracting atmosphere that would hinder critical decision making due to excessive second guessing. Give someone a task to do without a camera and then get them to do the same task with a camera and tell them if they screw it up, the video will be reviewed and their actions scrutinized by a board of judges and watch how different the results are.
@@Taylair I mean, you could say the exact same thing about voice recordings
Video recording is a way more visible intrusion which is likely to cause more of a distraction and will add nothing to the flight data which records absolutely everything we do in the background without us being visually reminded of it by a device pointed at us in the flight deck.
This is such a stupid argument the original video is making. The problem isn't that pilots aren't getting recorded. The problem is that everyone else is. Short of professions that can actively legally harm others, like the Police, there's no reason for everyone to be under constant surveillance, and the EU is much better in this regard.
I think the video would only be stored temporarily and overwritten unless in the case of an accident, just like voice recording. So there wouldn’t be constant monitoring, just extra information in the case of an accident. I see nothing wrong with this, and I think it’s a good idea. I’ve reviewed countless crash investigations and sometimes there is a lot of guesswork that has to be done due to the lack of video.
I can't believe the idiots in the original and in this video comments, supporting and championing a police/surveillance state.. ridiculous!
Same people that were reporting their neighbors for going on too many walks in one day during the lockdowns I bet! 😂
Cameras in the cockpit and passenger cabin. And a few cameras on outside of plane. All CVR and FDR data pushed live to satellite. No more over-written CVR and destroyed recorders losing valuable info.
Perhaps you’d like to copy and paste your browsing history and google search history for the last 6 months into the comments section here too!
I feel like Taylairs comments on this video seems biased. I agree with maximum
What would really be gained over cockpit voice recorder + black box storing all control movements and aircraft movements.
A lot actually. We would know who pressed what button not just that it was pressed, where each pilot was looking and when (did they see xyz displayed ect), what the instruments were displaying in the cockpit vs the data recordings of what they should have been, who was inside on the instruments and who was looking outside for traffic, if one or both of the pilots nod off and for how long, if any inappropriate or unapproved items are brought in the cockpit, and probably more I can't think of off the top of my head. Oh and it would be another redundant sorce of data incase some is destroyed in a crash.
@@X85283 tell me where the MH370 went?

@@X85283 it would be like WhatsApp video call or a Skype video call or FaceTime where the live feed goes straight to company HQ. And then they hire someone to keep watch on those pilots
