  • Using the E6B / CRP-5 flight computer to calculate our fuel burn based on our ground speed.
    The whizz wheel seems to be more popular than I thought!
    This is based on an FAA Pilot theory exam question (probably no longer current).
    This will help you with navigation planning in the 1940s.

    I am not entirely sure if this was supposed to be satire or not. Good contents regardless, obviously. If it is meant seriously, please consider that the most important fact of the slide rule is that whatever ratio is set up remains the same throughout the disc. That means that if in the same span of time the plane burns 15.3 gallons of fuel it moves 167 miles over the ground, that ratio is the same we will use for the 620 mile calculation. I.e. with 15.3 opposite 167, we find 56.8 opposite 620. Btw. you get to choose which ones you want for the inner and the outer scales; it won't make any difference.
