Borrego Contest Recap followed by adjusting the sighting device on the Edge 540
shoutout to Barry Hinrichs for the amazing photos from the contest
Video Text:
Feels good to be back making videos. Today I am working on adjusting my sighting device on the Edge based off feedback I got from the last contest. The last contest didn’t go as well as I had hoped but I learned a lot. The only thing I can do is get right back to practicing for the next one.

Test Flight After Pulling The Prop
มุมมอง 1.3K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Test flight in the Edge 540 after replacing the crankshaft seal. Finally getting back in the air after a few days of maintenance and work. Not the best day to practice, but it felt good to get in the air regardless. The Edge 540 is a surprisingly easy aircraft to work on. The ability to remove panels and access everything quickly makes routine maintenance a breeze.
Aaron McCartan flys better than me
มุมมอง 1.9K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today is all about 3/4 snap rolls on the vertical in the Edge 540 TH-cam has been an unbelievable tool for me throughout my aviation career. I watched aviation conent long before I ever got into flying and have continued to use it to learn to this day. This episode is centered around Aaron McCartan and a video he made about what his practice flights look like.
What Happened to the Bonanza? - a happy story

I know Jeff and Mark constantly rip on influencers, but they are some of my favorite influencers! Mark Pollard and Jeff Petrocelli are the hosts of an aviation podcast called the Fly Cool S Podcast. I honesty owe them so much for motivating me to get into my first contest. Plus all the insight from the guests they bring on has been invaluable. I highly recommend you give the FCS Podcast a listen.
Back in the J-3 Cub
มุมมอง 6536 หลายเดือนก่อน
The streak of flying had to come to an end at some point. While I could have tried harder to make it happen, I was glad I was able to spend a few days with my family out in Florida while on a work trip. I didn’t think I would be able to sneak a flight in today but the weather broke just long enough to make it happen.
Finally Addressing The Wheel Pants
มุมมอง 1.2K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
I was able to sneak a quick flight in before the storm hit California. The “atmospheric river” is closing in on Southern California and I only have a few hours this morning to get a flight in before it hits. I pulled the Cessna out and took it for a quick lap around the lake before starting on a couple long overdue projects. I dug up some old footage to make it complete.
Rendezvous With A Sukhoi Su-26

Edge 540 and Sukhoi Su-26 formation flight Ferrying a new plane home always has its challenges, especially when it’s a plane you’ve never flown before. My friend Brooks just picked up his new, to him, Sukhoi Su-26 and is going to make a stop in Hemet on his way back. I decided to have the Edge ready to rendezvous with him as he approached Hemet.
Radio Failed Mid Flight
มุมมอง 9366 หลายเดือนก่อน
Some days I feel like my timing is just on and I can make the Edge do anything I want it to, others feel like I walked face first into a brick wall. Today was the latter, I felt like I was flying it for the first time. To add insult to injury, my radio stopped working and I had to work my way into a busy pattern with no coms.

    Wings are mounted with an angle of incidence to the fuselage. If the judges are looking at the wing, sight to that, then adjust to taste I’d think

    So some unsolicited advice worth exactly what you paid for it. Zero lol. When you flick (snap). Don’t let the stick stop in the aft (for positive flick) position. Treat it like there is a spring there that it bounces off out straight to the unload. Time your foot accordingly. However fast you load… unload three times as fast. If you flick right. Only unload to neutral plus a little bit. You will find the sweet spot. If you flick left… unload all the way to the firewall!!!! And then try to push the stick more. Use full aileron with both left and right… but hook it. So unload straight and then right into the full aileron. For vertical snaps. Here is a good exercise, first do a level flick. Then pitch it up and do the exact same flick but maybe 25° nose high. Get real comfortable with those then increase the attitude so maybe 45° get comfortable there no keep increasing the angle by 10 or 15° doing multiple flicks until you’re really comfortable until eventually you get up to vertical should make a difference. Again, completely unsolicited advice, but I hope it helps. Blue skies, Rob.

    Hi Alex. Love your vids. Ground judging is unique in that a true perfect maneuver or orientation does not appear as such to those on the ground. You need to have observers to give feedback on your orientations. You adjusting your reference tool may be applicable to one orientation or angle but not all, depending on your ground observers. My point is that the position of judges is paramount and to fly to the perspective of the observer. Good luck fly safe!

    • @alexandercoats
      @alexandercoats 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Andrew! I was able to get out and watch my dad fly it to see how it looked and then he watched me from the ground. We made a few more adjustments and think we have it perfect now. I’ve also thought about adjusting the wrap on the plane to make it appear more straight

    Um yeah. I see even some of the judges missed it. Not unusual Bummer when you dont realise that and have even been doing wrong in training I guess that will go in your brain database of things to never let happen again We just had a comp here last weekend. I was on the downline in a double humpty and it had a full pos flick on it, anyway i just stuffed up, didnt pull quite hard enough, for no particular reason, and i got a pitch and a huge yaw and it just sat there like a cobra and im thinking wtf do i do now So i pulled just a bit more and man did it rotate fast. Yep HZ but i got a huge laugh from the judges when i landed

    You probably have some washout at the wing tip, thus the change from the wing incidences

    • @alexandercoats
      @alexandercoats 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Any idea on how to determine how much?

    • @jerryh265
      @jerryh265 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Need to mesure the difference between wing incidence at the root vs tip if any. I would use the incidence at the root. Could be 0% not sure of your plane-to place your 90/45 sight gauge. I would use two levels, one at the root and one at the tip and see if there is any difference Another to find out is ask the manufacturer and ask if the there is any washout at the tip and if any how many degrees than set your sights with a corrections for the difference

    • @jerryh265
      @jerryh265 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The incidence of the horizontal stabilizers vs the wing incidence will also affect the way the plane flies, but I would think that a high performance acro plane would be set at 0/0 degrees, again question for the manufacturer

      @@alexandercoats I fly an RV-8 at Sports level in the UK. Managed to win the Nationals in 2018 in it, which I was pretty happy with. That aeroplane is great in many ways, but it's a knife at a gunfight in a field of Extras and Pitts. I had always planned to work my way up the categories, but circumstances have thwarted me, and this year will be my first year not competing as I'm working towards a different flying goal. I still fly a lot of aeros, formation, and mock combat in the 8 though. It's a great aeroplane for that stuff. Great videos, please keep them coming!

    Nice to see a local airport to me. I am in Menifee so Hemet and French Valley are my locals. I only wish I was a pilot lol. I have only been in a single engine plane and a helicopter in my life, and those were probably 25-30 years ago as I kid. That is some awesome flying. Im jealous you guys get to do stuff like that, and with Diamond Valley as the backdrop. There used to be an aerobatic plane that was based at Pines Airpark on Scott Road (8CA5). It still shows it as an active airstrip as of 2017, but sat images say different for a while. The owner listed on one of the sites still has a 1977 Bellanca 7GCBC Aerobatic plane registered to them based at French Valley. I grew up off Scott road and used to listen to a plane from Pines climb and do steep dives and maneuvers for hours a couple times a week. That was maybe about 30 years ago. Don't know what happened to them, or if it is the same plane. Would be cool to actually see it instead of just listening to it.
