  • Edge 540 and Sukhoi Su-26 formation flight
    Ferrying a new plane home always has its challenges, especially when it’s a plane you’ve never flown before. My friend Brooks just picked up his new, to him, Sukhoi Su-26 and is going to make a stop in Hemet on his way back. I decided to have the Edge ready to rendezvous with him as he approached Hemet.

    Special shout-out to Rick Volker for being so wonderful to work with from first phone call onward. There has been a lot of texts, phone calls, emails, picturse, documents, and so on and more to come as he helps me transition to it and learn its secrets both on the ground and in the air. Volker owned it for 17 years (twice) as I understand it and I am grateful to buy a plane like this from a guy like that.

    You guys are flying the hottest airplanes. The Sukhoi is a difficult airplane to fly really well. Castor Fantoba and Jurgis Kairys are way ahead of the airplane. Amazing to watch them fly.

    A question. How does the Edge 540 compare to the Extra 330 in aerobatics? The Edge should have a higher roll rate and better climb performance, at the Red Bull Air Race the Edge has dominated. 🤔 But in aerobatics competitions the Extra 330 seems to be the gold standard? Do you know about the differences of those planes?

    • @alexandercoats
      @alexandercoats  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m sure I could find some specs and bring them up for a debate but until I fly a 330SC, I don’t know if I could honestly give you a good answer. I’ve sat in a 330SC and the seating position and wing placement is different which I’m sure gives you a different sensation when performing aerobatics. I know the edge is lighter, but the 330sc has a bigger engine.
      Until I fly one, I’m just going to believe that they are extremely similar.

    • @Mrfabulous7
      @Mrfabulous7 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@alexandercoats Thanks for your answer. I hope you will get the chance to test a 330SC yourself. I'm looking forward to this video. 😉
      Does the engine of the Extra have more engine displacement? But as I read it has less power as the one from the Edge. But I guess you will probably notice differences in the handling and precision due to aerodynamic differences.

    • @alexandercoats
      @alexandercoats  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Mrfabulous7 I believe the 330SC has the AEIO-580 and our Edge has the AEIO-540 exp. The books sat it has 320hp compared to the 330hp of the 330SC engine.

      Your female wants a house. I have a nice new build house on 6 acres in Ohio. At $800,000 it is the same price as my dad’s house in town in Redding, Ca. We have a few large business jet operators here in Central Ohio. I know on my salary I cannot afford California, horses and airplanes.

    Forgive my naivete, but why would you want to keep heat in the engine?

    • @alexandercoats
      @alexandercoats  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don’t need as much engine cooling in cruise compared to taking off

    • @booooooker
      @booooooker 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My guess was (for on the ground in the video), you want the temperatures to change as gradually as possible. So to let it cool down slower. In cold climates we wrap the cowlings in moving blankets for pre-heating and "cooling" the engines.
