    I had planned to put a 2500’ strip right next to my shop. After 5 years on a different small 2500’ grass strip 8 miles away with just 6 other pilots, I couldn’t imagine being on my own strip alone. There’s always something going on and great conversations to be shared. Plus we share mowing duties which definitely beats mowing alone for just my own use. The greatest part of aviation to me, is sharing it with others! Glad to see Dave is having a good time, watched him as he built his 750 on the Zenith forums maybe I’ll have my Zenith done this summer.

      Such a small world! And I completely agree with you. The friends that I’ve made at the airport and get to see every week have been such a huge influence on my life. I’d hate to isolate myself

    Dave is all of us! Also, audio is the bane of my existence. Airports > Airparks.

    I hangared at a private grass strip for 25 years. Loved it. Low cost and almost no aircraft traffic. We had the airspace to ourselves. It was perfect for practicing aerobatics. We had almost no airport politics. Small airports can be super political. Also, my local airport requires their mechanics to work on your airplane. You cannot even be present when they work on your airplane whether certified or experimental. That’s a no-go for me. I prefer the super small airports. I fly into other airports for fun and to visit other pilots and then return home to my super small airport without any fuss.

    • @alexandercoats

      That’s bizarre. I’ve never heard of something like that (MX wise). Not all airports are the same and I get the political part. Everyone has their own bliss.

    Ahh, you watched Trent's video too. Nice Hangar. Sounds like Dave is an awesome fella. He sure enjoyed that J-3 flight! Everybody does, can't not love a Cub. Man don't ever hate to say "Pay it forward". That is the key to life, not just aviation. The fellowship in the aviation community (and the model aviation community) is the most valuable part of it. You're a good dude Alex. You are humble and grateful. You've been blessed, and you'll bless many. You can't ask more of a man than that.

    Hey, I've really been liking your videos. Just some feedback on the opening shots. I like reading the texts, but they are sometimes hard to read with the white text on light backgrounds. Maybe restyling could help? Or also posting the text in the video description?

      @alexandercoats  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You’re not the first person to say that. I’m going to modify them to make it easier to read. As well as I’ll put them in the description from now on.

    Got my wings flying out of Palomar & Oceanside (OKB!). Used to hang out at the cafe attached to the old Barnstormer's hangars at Palomar's front gate. Great place to study & chat people up. The aviation community is filled with peeps from all walks of life with a shared PASSION for Flight. My primary instructor was Calvert "Lowell" Williams who was a pilot in the 357th FG "Yoxford Boys" in WWII. So many GREAT conversations! Broke my heart when they tore down those hangars & replaced them with a corporate jet center :(

    • @alexandercoats
      @alexandercoats  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those had to be some incredible conversations. I love how no matter what everyone does for a living, no matter how much money anyone has, we all can just have a beer and enjoy sharing stories about flying.

    Hey man! Student pilot here, and I can already relate. Have found the local flying community, around Peachtree City, GA, to be so friendly. I have a question for you, and when I just now went to your about page I saw you had a Patreon, so I signed up. So cheers to the extended online community!

      Hey I just saw you signed up. I’m going to refund your money. I totally forgot that was still up. I may use it again later down the road. But to be honest I just want to make content for people to view for free

    Our airport has three grass strips. Just those, no tarmac to be seen anywhere. And we love it for this, as grass is so much nicer on taildraggers.

    Downside however is that during winter, the entire airfield often gets so soggy that we cannot fly for weeks on end. And this year was particularly bad. As a result, most of us didn’t fly a single minute between October and yesterday. But yesterday, the stars aligned. Nice sunny weather, not all that cold, a mild breeze and the airfield finally open.
    And so we all went to fly.
    Joyce flying the J3 Cub with Victor, before handing the keys to her father Hanno, who then took it out to continue training his 14-year-old grandson. Bert tried to get his Nipper going. Madelon had a bunch of students lined up, as did Jaap. Victors RV4 was doing several flights by guys in the group with whom he’s building a Spitfire replica. Stefanie was taking their RV7 out for a lap around, and I couldn’t help myself. After flying I had gone home, thought better of it, got the Jodel out a second time and went up for a few more flights.
    Bliss….
    Yes, we can envy over Trents awesome home and hangar, but indeed, like you said - there is nothing like the camaraderie of a grass roots airport.
    Can’t wait for spring to arrive!!
    Thanks for your channel. Love every video you post!!

      Loved this story! It truly never hit me until one of our close friends was leaving. It just completely changed my mind on the matter. That being said, I’d love one day to have a big hangar here. But until then, I couldn’t be happier

    • @HansTeijgeler
      @HansTeijgeler 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@alexandercoats A hangar. Yes please!!! With the kind of aircraft hoarding that you seem to be doing, a big hangar to yourself would indeed be awesome. I would love to have one here as well. I'm at 4 now. A Jodel, a Fly Baby, an RV3 project and recently bought a Pitts S1C project. Add to that the T6 of my father in law and that hangar would be filling up quite quickly....
      Not going to happen here, but it's nice to have something to dream about, right?
      Happy landings! And keep this TH-cam channel going!!
