Is the $100,000 Imperial Xplore X145 Off Road Trailer Worth It? Find Out!!
Nelson Industries builds the Imperial Outdoor Xplore off road overland trailers. There are two versions the Xplore X145 and X195. As you might guess, the model number indicates the living space length 14.5ft and 19.5ft. We opted for the shorter Imperial X145 trailer.
Overall these trailers have top level componentry with an exceptional “spec sheet”. They have an aggressive exterior and luxurious feeling interior space. There’s a lot to like about this trailer but it’s not perfect.
We paid nearly $100k for this trailer. It is a steep price to be sure! Is it worth it? Maybe.
Stay Tuned for the upcoming video showing everything that is BROKEN.

I have the same one and it comes with a spacer and longer bolt to install where the rod mounts to the frame if you have any kind of lift. That will eliminate that extreme angle you have. If you do not install that ASAP your bearing on the other end won't last very much longer. Also, the instructions specifically say not to exceed 7 degrees between the unit and steering rod. That is why that o-ring came out. You might be okay though - -by the looks of the underside cleanliness I don't it goes off road much. Hope this helps.
Still waiting to see how your going to get the 145 loaded tounge weight below 500 pounds??
Why are Americans so focused on size instead of quality? Seems like a great unit
Agree. Smaller is better! More capable. Hard to find high quality small things. Stay tuned!
The 145 is 21 feet long and pushing 10 feet tall with a gwr of 6,100 pounds. That's not that small for an off-road trailer
@ but it is small compared to a lot of trailers that people are always comparing with these smaller overland trailers. People always say “idk why you’d pay $100k for a trailer this small when you can get one 4 times the size for $25k and blah blah blah”
@woolengrappler it's simply about the raw materials. If you build one with 18k of electronics alone it's gonna cost more regardless of size.
That Rav4 looks Amazing! Great job ! What kind of things did you change on the car to stop licking?
It is a fun one! Not sure on your question...
I know ! My question is regarding the things you replaced on the engine to prevent failures. Mine recently got a leak from the radiator (coolant) and I want to do the same you did so I don’t have to worry about any other issues in the future
@christianalexander3904 It's a long list. Essentially all wear items that fail due to age. Think every gasket and anything rubber. Including radiator, water pump, oil pump...
thank you ! I’ll start making a list. Here in Australia parts are not so bad but it will be an expensive restoration I think. Thank you again
Thanks for the info. Very helpful
Very welcome:)
We strongly recommend avoiding an Imperial, we bought an X195 a year ago and it has been nothing but trouble. The main issue has been delamination, and the subsequent water intrusion. In addition we've had the Truma unit fail, and the interior trim keeps falling off. Sadly it seems like we're going to need to sue Imperial and Tom's Camper Land, the dealer where we bought it, as they wouldn't let us trade it in on a model that actually works. This is after over a year of making payments and not having a usable trailer. Buying the X195 was a HUGE MISTAKE.
Crazy how these were hyped by ROA as the best off road trailers in the world. Now they have moved on to Pause and MDC.
@@bartman1857 We're so upset by the whole experience, what an expensive mistake. Hopefully the lawsuit doesn't drag on too log as we're still making payments on the useless X195.
@overlandcruisers that's a bummer. I know two people that have taken legal action against IO. One won full refund plus legal fees. One worked a deal with Tom's for trade in.
@@bartman1857 Thanks for that info, we're really not looking forward to suing them but they've left us no other option. We're already well over $35K, and 14 months, into the X195 and it has been nothing but trouble.
No disrespect meant but I don't see $100k for a 21' trailer. Am I missing something here? Granted it loos like it's built great and seems really solid.....but $100k?
Check out the components used... rather different from most any trailer out there. It's all in the details. Still expensive tho
He could have got it for 85k 1,500 miles closer to home.
I bought the same unit (without the double cooktop or enlarged fridge) a couple of months back. It's a nice unit, but as you elude, not trouble free. No RV, trailer, or camper is. My previous slide-in pickup bed camper was a nightmare and so far this is so much less of a headache. After getting it home from Nelson Industries, I discovered the Truma water heater simply did not work and had to bring it back to Wisconsin for replacement at no cost. The dry flush toilet so far is fine. Hoping I dont have problems with it. The awning is very nicer and easy to deploy, but boy I found it difficult to roll up and put away all zipped up tight. Since I deliberately bought the smaller unit so I could fit it in my garage, the first thing I did was buy a wall tent for those times when am overnighting for more than one night in one spot. So far, I am quite pleased with my purchase unlike my previous one where I had instant dread. Looking forward to your future videos.
I agree. Nothing is trouble free. We deleted the awning for the reasons you found (not easy to use). Glad it's working well for you. So you bought it directly from Isaac?
@@TruckCamper I bought it new from Shaun at the South Fork CO dealer, but to avoid shipping charges I picked it up from Isaac at Imperial in WI. I found both very easy to work with.
Gotcha. Just out of curiosity... When did you pick it up? What was your build date? Check the VIN sticker on the side it will have the date.
@@TruckCamper I picked it up in August. The build date 10/23 although it was sold to me as 2024 model year.
Our Truma didn't work as well, they said that it wasn't properly plugged in which seemed a little odd.
You seem like nice people, but I'm sorry, but are you guys nuts paying that price! Did you even shop around? Are you first-time rv'ers? You could have bought something nicer just as big or much bigger for half that price, with pull out slides, bigger kitchen, bedroom, more storage space, etc, for 1/2 the price! You guys got ripped off, scammed, taken advantage of, I could go on....why???🤷🙄. I'm sure within a couple of years or so or less, you will see u made a mistake & see other same size or bigger campers you could have or wished you bought for less money. Respectfully...
It would seems that way. However, we have owned 3 truck campers and 1 Class C RV. All of them extensively modified for off road / off grid. I can tell you the cost difference in high quality components is HUGE. Lithium Battery, Larger Solar Systems, Acrylic Windows, HVAC systems... massive cost variance. I realize most people focus on SIZE. However, smaller/lighter is crucial for off road capability. We like getting away from people which requires more capability. We also travel 3+ Months per year and need higher quality. Is it worth it?? Not sure. Still crazy expensive.
LOL, I don't even have to watch this and I can tell you that 100k is ridicules
It's a ton of money, no doubt.
Did you install the big fridge and the double induction cooktop ?
Factory upgrades.
@TruckCamper very nice ! And glad you're back
@richbowie76 Thanks!!
Didn’t know that was possible
We have had a X195 for 18 months. It has issues but still the best trailer for us. Currently camping east of Bend, Oregon in the high desert. 👍
Excellent! Lots of great features for sure. Thanks for sharing and watching.
You remind me of the fellow from Aging Wheels. In fact, I thought you were him when this came through my feed this morning at 5am and that's not a bad thing at all. He's a great human.
Thanks! :)
I like the fresh and grey tank with standard hoses. And the cabinets. And the front storage. Oh and the hitch. And the fridge. Jeepers, i like quite a lot on this thing. But not sure the juice is worth the squeeze, as they say. What the hell...you've got very unusual hair these days. I'll subscribe.
Yes, they got a ton right... which is why we bought one. But it has issues too. :( Stay tuned.
114 nights at the Ritz Carlton seems like a better deal, I gotta a tent, cot and bag...
That is a consideration! Just depends on use. Everyone is different. We enjoy staying out away from people, noise, traffic and pollution. It's fun to camp out on MTB trails and play on off road routes. But certainly is crazy expensive.
$100K is a bit steep for me -- but the TAXA Outdoors TTs are more in my ballpark for the simple things I want one for (no, not to live in or spend weeks in) -- so I'll looking at their Tiger Moth and Cricket (the Mantis is a bit too long and may not fit in my (future) standard/residential 2-car garage length-wise -- the other 2 will. Any TT I get HAS to be garage-able (for several reasons). -- BR
@billredding2000 don't do it trust me . Arkto G12
It is spendy no doubt. TAXA does make nice sized trailers. Just make sure to do research. Talk to owners. Make sure you are aware of any issues they have. Thanks for sharing!
$100,000 for a 15 foot trailer. Sounds legit.
Come on man its 21 feet if you count the tounge and spare tire😅
Don't run the math on cost per square foot! HAHA
True. Gotta count all the inches... :)
These have been on my radar, specifically this smaller version, glad to see you giving it a go. Look forward to your next videos!
Might want to wait for the next vid first
It is a neat trailer. Best overall for capability, comfort and size. But it does have issues. Not sure I'd recommend at this point.
True Story.
Hey man good job going thru this rig. Three comments: Did you say you may try 37" tires? Would they fit and they would create so much more sway. WTF my brother your towing this 6k trailer with a Bronco? And no it's not worth 100k because the CO dealer is selling them for a lot less.
Yes. Plan to test 37" tires. It would add 2" overall height to the trailer. Won't know how it will affect the towing until we try. It's not 6k lbs. Bronco Raptor. It does have upgrades which helped justify the price.
@TruckCamper you do know everything you add to your bronco needs to be subtracted from your tow capacity. What does your owners manual say about towing and tounge weight capacity . My guess is 3,500 and 350 pounds. Subtract all the add ons. Then multiply by say 85% that's your towing capacity. Your x145 is over 4 k pounds dry. Your over brother. Nothing you can do about it. Now let's talk tounge weight. Xplore s are famous for being tounge heavy . The 195 is upwards of 1,000 pounds loaded. Your loaded tounge weight will be 600 lbs. Just so others know the toilet and other upgrades do not add up to 100k at CO dealer. Sorry man
@TruckCamper even if you have the 2024 Raptor which has 4,500 towing capacity your over
Thanks for the education... :) I'm rather familiar with truck builds and weights. We also have corner weight scales and know the exact weights front/rear and side/side. It drives great. Handles great. We did trade a higher price for upgrades. Will it work out? Well... wait and see.
Thank you for your concerns.
We purchased our first new (to us) class A 34 ft motorhome (Ford 460 Chassis, 1997 Winnebago Adventurer) over the summer. The old lead-acid 6V deep cycle house batteries were tired and inefficient so we're upgrading to four LiFePo4 12.6V 100Ah Power Queen self-heating units. - for a total of 400 useable amp-hours. Lots to figure out here, but we certainly will need a DC-DC charger, as well as cables that will run from the chassis battery (just behind the front bumper) all the way to the storage area under the queen bed at the back of the rig - a distance of around 30 ft. This is necessary to keep the batteries from ever being exposed to temps lower than -4F (-20C), which would damage them. (We're in Alberta, Canada btw, where temps can sometimes dip below -30C or even -40C/F). Locating the batteries in the bedroom where a heat duct and ambient room heat can reach them is therefore a must. But with that long of a cable run and a total of 400 amp-hours' worth of storage, how much amperage would our DC-DC charger need to produce in order to charge that battery bank in a timely manner without damaging them? These batteries do have a 100-amp BMS. Four hours of engine idling seems excessive for this purpose, but whatever it is - it is. How many amps is your charger putting out to charge your 200Ah bank in four hours?
50amp DC Charger = 50amps per hour 400ah batteries = 8 hrs from zero to 100% Wire size calculator = www.wirebarn.com/Wire-Size-Calculator-_ep_41.html You can run multiple DC chargers. But need to size wiring accordingly. Oversized wires is safe. Smaller gauge wires will heat up and be a fire hazzard. You also need to install proper fuses and disconnect switch to keep be safe. Make sure your alternator has enough output for whatever load you want to add. Otherwise it will burn up quickly. Most of the older generation vehicles have much lower alternator power output as the electrical demands decades ago were much less. Do lots of research if doing it yourself... Otherwise find an experienced 12v electrician.
Hey nice ride- can you please share the link to where I can buy the shocks etc
Shocks and springs are from Old Man Emu (OME). Part # can be found on ARB website. I don't have links as this was from 6yrs ago
Important to know the difference between a propane detector and a carbon monoxide detector!
True. And propane detectors should be replaced every couple years.
Still got this? I'd love to see 2 door convertible SUV content. I own a 98 Isuzu Amigo. Originally came with folding soft top, but came to me with aftermarket removable hard top. 5spd, 4x4, fun and also "rare"😂
I just noticed this is your third most popular video! Clearly people want to know more about this awesome SUV
Sadly no... We sold it. Definitely missed. Sooo fun! But we do have a 2dr Bronco now. It is equally fun and more off road capable. We may do some videos on it....
Fun and rare!!!
Great explanation man, had to install a light bar for a friend, and this was exactly what i needed. Definitely have a new sub.
That's awesome, welcome aboard!
i think with the vehicle weight added that 1/4" of clearance can result in an unwanted situation on highways?
Not sure what your concern is. We ran this setup for 40k miles towing, hauling, off road. Worked flawless.
@@TruckCamper good to hear- i just know from off roading tires get kicked back real hard sometimes and it seemed very close - glad it worked out!
That could be. But typically on compression or front impact. Due to the control arms being in the rear... as the suspension compresses it pushes the tire forward. Also, in general high impacts would be with the wheels in somewhat of a straight forward position. Cycling the suspension fully like we showed is the best method to verify clearance through the entire range and steering angle.
I wonder how the northstar pop up camper fares in comparison?
It would be extremely similar. We've looked at most of the models. Any popup material does little for sound or insulation.
I just feel like something is mussing in the F250 idk why lol Tundras are beasts!
Looks are subjective. Function and components are excellent on the Super Duty. Just works.
I got my 18’ SC because of this build.. Family of 4 and came from Toyota as well no regrets 🤙 thanks for the content
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.. :)
It’s nice to see a two door toyota rav restored. I’ve always wondered what compared to a Suzuki Samurai for fun light off-roading, and here it is. Awesome! Thanks you two.
Very welcome! FUN is the best description for the 2dr Rav. Sadly they were not popular new which makes them near impossible to find today.
This is how SHOULD look a proper F250 and drive and not a princess paviment
Agreed. They can be setup to be plenty capable!
I’m wondering, if you had a tape or painted stripe the length of your truck bed at the center line and a centerline mark on the front of the camper at floor level, assuming you could see both through the rear window or a camera , would this aid in loading the camper and keeping it centered.
That's a cleaver idea. Might be helpful. :) The big challenge is off road where the camper and truck are not level. We can quickly 1 shot load in the garage. Outdoors gets a bit interesting with extra factors like wind.
How many clicks are u on? I can’t get mine dialed in right. I’m also having the same issue with the bushing slipping awkwardly
We kept it in the middle range. Fox has a frame spacer & longer bolt available (contact customer service) this will help reduce the angle if lifted. Getting it turned properly is crucial to keep it from binding check full lock turning and compressing/extending suspension and turning. I've seen these snap off from improper positioning. Ours worked great but we did take extra time / testing to ensure position.
The reasoning to say you couldn't find the right drop hitch so you lifted the whole trailer instead is quite comical lol
It fixed the problem. And so much nicer not dragging the trailer. Clearance is essential. We've hauled it off road and through washes, no problem
The official Idaho state tree is the Burnt Pine.
Haha - makes sense to me :)

No plans or fees. It is just amplifying your existing cell phone antenna. Essentially giving it a much increased range.

Still big into off road... We built 2 other rigs since this one sold. Just have been rather occupied with real estate projects. We plan to get back to sharing videos but realistically they are not the highest priority as they are time intensive and don't produce much financially. But we do enjoy sharing info and helping people which the videos are great for! Thanks for watching.
NAH, IT IS AN OVERRATED PIECE OF JUNK, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY A HOUSE INSTEAD, OR BUY YOURSELF A USED DODGE RAM TRUCK.
We owned the truck and camper in 2016. Since then have owned two other truck campers. FWC is fine for what it is (although expensive). Tundra was a great fit for the camper with upgraded suspension and tires; although anything heavier requires an HD truck. Our current truck is a Super Duty and it has much greater capacity

Especially simple and light weight. More fun than modern space ships
What you guys are getting for MPG?
We averaged 17mpg. Best was nearly 20. Worst was 14mpg.

That sounds like a project!
Thanks for the video report. Those lookout towers are very neat. Did you find that there were areas that were not passable on your trip?
They are! It's fun to find them. We had to bypass one section due to active fire. Otherwise, we got through. Electric pole saw was rather useful. :)
I just bought the same rims and I’m having trouble with wheel weights contacting my caliper. Was wondering where they put your wheel weights and if there was any issue balancing them? Thank you in advance !
We had issues once... The shop put the weights in the center and the caliper knocked them off. Put them on the inside of the wheel or outside offset of caliper zone. Works great!
The blue in line hose filters say right on them they are not for disinfection. They filter out chemicals that's what they are supposed to do
They might help with taste but not a functional filter for health or water quality concerns
#1How bad is the Idaho BDR with a camper roll over side hills and the like #2 clearance up top on trees ALIVE OR DEAD#3 frequency of streams to refill drinking water and camp?
Keep weight low to help with COG. No issues with proper suspension. We have an electric pole saw for trees and use it plenty to cut through as needed. Plenty of water fill opportunities - our 40g tank will last 10 days typically
You can bet the 250 is built better than the putt, putt house.
Not sure what that means. But ours has been excellent.
you sound like you're trying to convince yourself a three-quarter ton is the same as a 1 ton. you have a lot of payments on your three-quarter ton and I feel that but it's not a 1 ton and it will never be. Despite all your recitation of statistics, which seems to be a special skill of the cars and coffee generation. I'd like to see you swap suspension components on a heavy duty truck rather than talking about it
We had one payment. And we custom ordered the truck. We chose exactly what we wanted. Video is to explain the physical differences which is nearly nothing. We did swap all the suspension and we did post videos on modifications. I do all the work myself.
What's the mpg?
Depends on conditions and speed. 10-12mpg is average for road driving under 65mph.
What's the mpg?
Off road will vary. On road 10-12mpg keeping speed under 65mph. Not bad considering the modifications
