  • We continue on Section 4 of the Idaho BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) from Darby to Elk City. This route includes the most popular Idaho Overland road segment the “Magruder Corridor”.
You can expect moderately rough and narrow roads with more frequent traffic on this historic 101 mile single lane road. Primarily you’ll encounter dual sport motorcycles. Be watchful. The road travels through the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Sadly much of the forest has been burned and fires are common in the summer months. Be sure to check road condition and status before heading out.
Burnt Knob Fire Lookout is an exceptional detour to explore. It is a rough, steep 4WD only road. This is my favorite lookout tower in Idaho by far. Please tread lightly and keep these special sites trash free. It’s a special place!
    Next week… our adventure continues!

Thanks for posting these great trail videos, helps us us feel more confident about some of the minor rough spots we might encounter with our Super Duty and truck camper!

I was up there in my side by side 3 years ago. Red River Hot Springs, elk City, French creek switchbacks…..tons of place to ride in Idaho.

I resurfaced that road, fixed a bad washout and built one bridge on the Montana side in 2005..

Magruder? I've known about him since I was toddler due to Beachy Park in Lewiston, the place where they hanged the four murderers. It's next to the city pool.

Hi, I was wondering if you could let me know how difficult the 468 Magruder Corridor rd is from Montana to Elk Creek and also the short trip up to Burnt Knob as I am thinking of doing it. I have a 2022 Ford F350 with 35 inch tires and a bigfoot 9.6 truck camper

No issues. Air down tires a bit. Just a tough road in sections. But most any vehicle could travel through. Carry tire repair kit. Air compressor. Drive at safe speeds. Have fun!!

If I was hired to build a lookout station I would have been fired. I would have been caught just sitting on my behind staring at the landscape. So how is your 250/550 lol treating you?

HAHA - Agreed! That view just doesn't seem real. Just incredible. "Donkey" has been a champ! Will do an update video on it after our Idaho series. We still love the truck... which is saying a lot! I've owned well over 60 vehicles and very few last more than 2 years. :)
