  • Barrett Lake Trail is located in Northern California just north of Wrights Lake. You can park trailers on the road before Wrights Lake or in the staging areas. Make sure to follow parking guidelines: detach trailer and park within parking spaces. There is are gate posts at the trail entrance to limit vehicle width to approximately 85”. Measure your Jeep to ensure it will fit. You’ll also want to check if the trail is open. It can be closed anytime and typically is only open from the end of July to the beginning of August.
We’ve driven the trail with our Toyota Tacoma (on 37s) and with the Yamaha Wolverine RMAX. The RMAX is much quicker through the obstacles and can easily complete the 5.5 mile distance in under 2 hours. That’s not to say the trail isn’t difficult! Many say this trail is more difficult than the Rubicon Trail (and I agree).
You can camp at Barrett Lake but there’s no amenities other than a pit toilet and you need to pack out all trash. There is a 2 mile hike from the lake to an historic plane crash site. This is worth the effort. You’ll find debris from a Grumman S-2 plane scattered throughout the forest.
Tips: Avoid the trail on weekends! It can get extremely crowded. Be prepared this trail is extremely difficult some rate 9 of 10.
    What a fun adventure!

Fun rock crawling and a cool hike make for a great adventure. It would be interesting to check out an old historic plane crash. Thank you for sharing. Mary 💕 Fred

Haha... Thanks! We did bring DOT helmets with us but they don't work with comms. Thankfully the other states don't care! Cali... why do the Sierra Nevada mountains need to be there!!
