  • It’s replacement time! After 3 years and 32k miles!
    Yokohama Geolandar XAT - 37x12.5R17 - Load D - 3,525 Capacity - 3 Ply Sidewalls - 19/32nds Tread Depth
    Our tread depth is even on all four tires with each measuring at 7/32 (center) and 11/32 (edges). The crowning and cupping wear has been an issue since the first year of ownership. At the current rate of tread wear the center tread would likely achieve the 45k mileage warranty at 2/32 (center) tread depth. However, we will never know!
    SOO noisy! The tread noise has become comparable to a mud terrain tire which is obnoxious on the highway. There is some light cracking developing (age related). And our tire plug failed causing the rear tire to go flat. Time for replacement.
    Our first flat tire (10 months old) was from a bolt penetrating through a tread block (on road). The hole was plugged and the plug held for over two years. Not bad. Durability has been excellent. Off road traction has not disappointed: deep snow, rock, dirt and gravel. On one trip we had the tires aired down off road for nearly 30 days while traveling the Idaho BDR route of ~ 1,000 miles. No issues.
    We have hauled heavy with the truck camper and enclosed trailer for several months and 3k miles. We’ve towed our dump trailer with 4 yards of gravel. Above all the tires have been reliable and durable.
    On road they have only required balancing once in 3 years. They roll smoothly and track straight (no pulling) with good steering on center feel. Impressive for such a large diameter tire.
    I’m guessing the tire crowning / cupping may be related to: tire carcass design, constant heavy weight or narrow wheel (8.5” wide - minimum required). It’s also possible that the tires were damaged when the Ford dealer overinflated the them to 80psi (max pressure 50psi) and it wasn’t discovered until several weeks later.
    I’d recommend the tires with some reservation due to our tread wear issues. I’m guessing a wider wheel and lighter vehicle may not have the same trouble. Would be curious to hear others experiences.
    Can you guess what the new tires will be??

    Just fitting my second set, 135000 km on my first set. 2.5mm of tread left on middle blocks, 7mm left on outer. Rotate and look after your tire pressures and suspension.

      Good advice. However, these tires do have a crown design, as you also confirmed. We liked many things about the tires but not enough to buy again. Thanks for sharing

    I commented on these tires on my 20 F250 on one of your other threads. At 30k miles I started to notice what you are stating. I ended up getting the Falkins Wildpeaks in 37 12.5 20's and I presently have 35k miles and will easily get another 10-12k miles. They are still relatively quiet and for the occasional snow they see are much better. Hands down better than any Nitto Ridge grappler or Toyo tire I have had. I will be getting another set of falkins.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for sharing your experience. My understanding is the Wildpeak have a 2 ply sidewall construction vs 3 ply sidewall. We spend a good amount of time at low air pressure off road and want the extra durability. Wildpeak may work well on road but off road they have poor lateral traction and overall just don't hook up. I've had issues trying to guide trucks through obstacles with the Wildpeak tires. Really everything is a trade off for tires. The best on road tires are typically lacking off road.

    I have what is essentially the same rig as yours...same truck and weight. I can't say enough good things about the Cooper Discoverer LTX AT3. I've got 285/75/18 and they're fantastic. Quiet, smooth, wearing great and BURLY sidewall. Transformed my truck.

      Great feedback! I've heard others enjoying those tires as well. It seems like a good crossover highway to all terrain design. Looks like they offer the 37x12.5R17 but Load D 124R index. We wanted to move to a Load E 128 index for extra weight capacity. I ran the Cooper ST MAXX tires years ago.
      Are your tires 2 ply sidewall?

    Unfortunately this isn’t a tire brand issue. This is just the traits of any tires that get into the 33” and up. I’ve owned them all…bfg ko2’s, cooper xlt at3, toyo open country, Goodyear duratrac. It’s just the nature of the beast with large A/T tires.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't experienced this issue and been running many brands. Certain tires like the GoodYear Duratrac cup if not rotated every 3-5k miles. There are plenty of variables to factor beyond maintenance like wheel width, load, pressure. Thanks for sharing

    There are soo many tires that have finally caught up to Toyo for HD trucks nowadays. Centramatics have really kept tires on my full-time set-up wear very flat with my 36" Toyo 608z load range H off-road 19.5s. More choices...

  • @mudbuster50
    @mudbuster50 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Run a higher pressure like 62-65 in the front and about the same in the rear or 70 plus when hauling and a load range E for that rig. That will most likely fix your cupping issues.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was a tire carcass issue. The heavy load probably didn't help. It was well within the load capacity rating for the tire and tire pressure was always set for the load.

    • @mudbuster50
      @mudbuster50 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Possible. Speaking of a different tire completely, I had a single wheel f350 and always ran load range E tires before switching to a D rated tire for a better ride. I had a big slide in camper as well. I’ll tell you one thing, it was a noticeable difference in stability even at the recommended tire inflation. The truck is rated for E rated tire for a reason. I was about to ditch a new set of tires and go back to the e rated, but I sold the truck.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mudbuster50 Our truck is setup for off road... it handles well but not rock solid suspension that doesn't move. We also run without sway bars. It has tuned 2.5" Fox resi shocks with progressive rate leaf springs designed for the loaded weight. It is surprisingly good loaded on and off road. We spend way too much time off road to want tires that don't flex. Our replacement tires ar the same size but do have Load E letter rating. However max psi is 65. We match psi to the recommendation from Toyo based on the actual axle weight.

    I'm between the RT trail (looks like your next tire), Recon Grappler, and falken at3w for my Ram. Would like to have the 3 peak snowflake rating but others look like they'll do fine. Also a truck camper guy here.
    Geolanders on my land cruiser and pretty happy with them - only 10k on them so far but still pretty quiet.
    Thanks for this video and looking forward to yours on the RT Trails!

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd look at Toyo AT3 for snowflake. Falken isn't on the same level construction as Toyo and has poor lateral traction. Toyo has some excellent options for heavy loads! Recon Grappler looks interesting. RT Trail has excellent specs will see how they hold up!

    • @TigerRagFishingTeam
      @TigerRagFishingTeam 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @TruckCamper had the AT3 Toyo's on my land cruiser. I didn't really care for them on it and pulled them off during the trial period. They were definitely louder than the Geolanders (g015), and didn't ride or handle as well.
      Good to hear another opinion on the falkens as there seems to be a cult following on them and apparently everyone likes them. I don't like what I'm seeing from their new hybrid tire - balance issues, out of round, and somewhat noisy when brand new.
      I'm coming from BFG KO2's which have been pretty good - quiet and even wear. Tire guy says the quality has gone down on them lately - balance and less mileage (well under 30k miles on heavy duty trucks). Maybe the ko3's will be better.
      Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TigerRagFishingTeam Geolandar g015 are a good tire overall. Toyo RT trail are louder than the X-AT and don't track as well but like the higher weight capacity (essentially a more refined MT). Toyo AT3 is more comparable to Ko2. Yes I agree Ko2 quality has dropped. I've run at least 6 sets of the Ko2 and it was my go to but not as good for HD application. Will be curious how the ko3 does.
      Falken cult following makes no sense. Maybe due to the lower cost? Similar to the Patagonia tires (basically junk but cheap).
      My favorite overall tire is the Michelin defender LTX but limited sizing options. Can't beat the mileage, noise, mpg, snow traction... but they look borning. Haha

    • @TigerRagFishingTeam
      @TigerRagFishingTeam 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TruckCamper thanks for the info on the noise and tracking of the RT Trail. Hard to find many with experience on them. The price on them is still a major advantage on them though. That may push me towards the nitto Recon Grapplers 37x11.5r17. Both have excellent weight capacity for payload for a truck camper.
      Agree on Michelins - have primarily run them for years.

    I have a F350 crew cab and am going to go with the 17" Method Beadgrips you had and the Nitto Recon Grappler in 37x11.50Rx17. I like a tall skinny tire with a lot of sidewall so I can air down to lower psi when needed. Don't be fooled by 2 ply and 3 ply sidewall marketing claims...it depends on how the tire is designed, the thickness and material of the plies, etc. BFG came out with that "3 ply sidewall" BS over 40 years ago to counter the claim that radials had weak sidewalls when compared to bias ply tires.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great setup! I love that tire size. Been thinking about trying those exact tires on a rig. Love the slightly narrower design; perfect for narrow factory wheels. I've heard good things about the Recon Grapplers as well. It is possible for ply counts to be deceiving but in general it is a good indication of strength and durability. I've had good success off road with 3 ply rated tires. I can't believe the "Load C-F" ratings are still used; old school and not relevant (Load Index is more precise). Thanks for sharing your experience. :)
