Enjoyed the review very much but have a question about the song ‘Here And Now.’ The version with the same artist and album cover I found on Amazon Music doesn’t have a female vocalist. It’s purely instrumental. Is there a different version that has vocals?
I found it. The track is ‘La Casa’ on the same album. Way cool!
Thanks for watching. I believe the vocalist's name is Alma Naidu and she's definitely singing in this version. That said, you may be mistaking her voice with the clarinet (Could be a sax but I think it's a clarinet) She sings along side it and the cool part I mentioned is it's hard to tell where one picks up and the other lets off. Very cool track! I'm on Qobuz and don't use Amazon anymore. So no clue if you've got a different recording. Listen carefully and let me know if you hear her.🍻
@@MisterChibs I don’t know what Amazon did but the track ‘Here And Now’ on Wolfgang Haffner’s site definitely has the vocals you describe but the track on Amazon is instrumental. The 3rd track ‘La Casa’ has a lot of that blending of voice and instruments as well. Well, thanks for the music recommendations. The album is really good. I’ll try a different streaming service soon.
@@williamhicks2763glad to help! At this point Qobuz or Tidal will be a better experience for you. Especially if you get into Roon! 🍻
What diffrent power supply do you recommend that is not stock to improve its preformance? please im new also do you need bit perfect software for everything ? or can you just plug and play music after installing drivers and that it.
Hey, you do need Bit perfect software if streaming from your computer. My favourite and what I recommend is Roon. Check out my video on that. As far as power supply upgrades for the SU-6. I never felt the need to upgrade mine. It does a great job without any mods and I’m not sure you would get a perceptible difference. Best off spending that money elsewhere (like Roon) imo. Hope that helps! 🍻
Always a fan of your videos, but not sure why I ddint get a notification for this until today 😢 Anyways great review! I found a used Holo Spring 2 KTE for 1500 and love it! Using it with my Rogue M180s and a borrowed PS Audio Gain Cell Pre, to both Klipsch Cornwall IVs and Magnepan 1.7s is astonishing. In a way so realistic and natural, too much so sometimes. Sound stage is much wider. Gonna try HQ player soon. If youre good with HQ Player, you may wanna try their Holo Red Streamer. Not many reviews of it but from what Ive heard, it does play music up to the highest limits of Holo Audio gear and would be a fun little project :)
Thanks for watching and for the recommendation! Let me know what you think of HQ player if you end up trying it.🍻
No such thing as “burn-in” for a DAC.
My favourite Mark Twain quote: “It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so. “
@@MisterChibs If you think DACs require a burn-in, your understanding of the device is a complete and utter embarrassment. And 500 hours? Seriously, how clueless are you, exactly?
Note the preamp is built into the signal path. Therefore, it isn't possible to remove it. Setting the volume to 94 duplicates normal line level input of 4 volts (balance).
This was not my understanding at all. If this is the case, I understand why they don't have a separate power button for the preamp. Thank you for clarifying! 🍻
China overpriced shit
LOVE the looks & build….but waaaaaay tooooo complicated for me. I am just going to keep smiling with my Volumio Rivo > Iris > I²S >Denefrips Pontus II!!! I just use my set-up for streaming Qobuz via a self-built Roon Server for stereo playback. That’s it…. and it is so enjoyable. I do not need a remote for the DAC…. SIMPLE is better sometimes… COOL review…but I have no FOMO!!! 😅 (you sound like you DO!!! 😀)
Sounds like you’ve got your system dialled in👍🏻 FOMO is my way. 😅
These units are sooooo beautiful. I do not need a preamp…I think that I would be more of a candidate for a MAY DAC. You NEED to review one!! 😂
@@bobb.9917you can buy the spring 3 without Preamp. I would love to get my hands on a May!!🍻
HQPlayer Desktop performs much better on same hardware if run on Linux. The delay in buffering/latency is no problem there. Offloading to GPU (NVIDIA) for compute also assists if CPU not up to task. Prefer up-sampling to DSD myself and with DSD ladder lower output (half of PCM) and HQPlayer default -3dB attenuation you will notice the need for more preamp gain. My combo consists of a Holo Audo Spring 3 KTE with Holo Audio Serene KTE side note : HQPlayer 5 has added some DAC corrections for specific DAC's
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Figures Lynux runs smoother with HQ player. 🍻
too much money!😭😭
No power button on the remote? No thanks
Why do you need a power button on a dac? Shouldn’t cost more than a few dollars per month in electricity to just leave it on.
Would love if they added a standby button! I typically do leave it on but that’s out of laziness 😅
Hey 👋 I once also owned the Spring 3 KTE and though it sounded great the PLL issue with it locking in was really annoying to me, especially when playing the next track in cue and it being of different resolution, I would constantly lose the first two to three seconds of the next track to be played. YES-I know I could have turned this function off but then why have it! In the end it was a deal breaker for me and since moved it forward.
@@juanvalentin3302 thanks for sharing your experience. Wondering what you were streaming from. The only time I noticed the locking was using optical from that TV. 🍻
Hi and thank you for your reply. I can't recall if it happened with all inputs but definitely using the I2S and USB inputs while being fed from a Eversolo DMP-A8 while playing files stored on my NAS and streaming from Qobuz. P.S. I was also smitten by the FOX 🦊 on the top. L.O.L.
Hey Mr chips, im.a new subscriber. Are you from the Toronto GTA?
@@chrishmeet yep🍻
@MisterChibs Hi, Im from Toronto as well. I'm waiting on delivery on a 300B source output stage. Would you be interested in reviewing it ? It's made by Bill Baker from Response Audio. The Harmonia V3 output stage. If you're interested, let me know.
Nice but at close to $7,000 here it’s a bucket load of cash for a DAC.
@@aussie8114 that’s a lot! Are you talking about the May??
@@MisterChibs No, the spring 3 top spec with pre amp. $6,890
@@aussie8114💰wow!
Hello and thanks for the interesting review, please add comparison with H390 internal DAC that will probably interest many of us
I can tell you that this Holo DAC is (much) better than any amplifier internal DAC. But you only need the Cyan 2 to better it, if it’s comfortable enough for you. It will save you a lot of money 💰
Thanks
@@vittoriomartinidonati What Joe said! Spring 3 is much better than H390. As far as integrated DACs go, the H390’s internal is no slouch but getting a Spring will improve things quite a bit. 🍻
I use both. Mainly HQplayer upsampled to DSD 512 using sync L for higher bitrate files and Sync Ll for redbook with ASDM7EC V3 modulator. I occasionally change back to NOS for older rock/pop.
@@joshuabrain9751 You must have a beast of a computer! 🍻
@@MisterChibs up there but there’s better these days. 12700F, 32gb DDR5, RTX3080. It’s in another room to the hifi and streams through to a Pi running RoPieeeXL so no fan noise issues.
Great Review🏆21:32 There is no POWER button bc R2R dac's are better served being left powered on 24/7. They don't draw much power while idle. Just don't let Greta Thunberg know or she'll send her climate activist after you to toss soup & paint all over your gear :P I watched your review of the Denafrips Venus II a while back and came close to purchasing it bc they do actually have a service center about 1hr away from me but I ended up going w/ the Spring 3 KTE w/ the PreAmp instead. I swap back and forth between my Spring 3 & Chord Qutest, neither of which needs a DDC as I use USB for my setup. My Chain: Roon Core (i7-13700K + RTX-3090 64GB Ram) > Roon Bridge/Ubuntu (Beelink EQI12 Mini PC, Intel Core i3-1220P) > Qutest & Spring 3 > GoldPoint DAC Selector Switch > NobSound AMP Selector Switch > Cayin HA-3A or Burson 3X GT or Ferrum Oor + Hypsos > Any of the following: ZMF Caldera LTE (Redheart), Atrium LTE (Koa), Vérité Closed (Sapele), Meze Elite & Empyrean | Sony MDR-Z1R | Focal CMG | Senn HD58X, 580, 600, 6XX, 660. My Roon Core is my HTPC and kept in another room to mitigate noise while the Roon Bridge PC is silent & produces less heat output (damn Texas HEAT is brutal at times). Could have gone w/ a Pi but considering the cost of Pi's these days vs an i3 PC, the i3 PC was a no brainer. Not to mention I've heard reports of Roon Bridge on Pi's can have issues w/ drop outs and often times needs to be reset. Furthermore for anyone considering the Holo May, the Spring 3 will get you to about 90% performance of the May. I went w/ the Spring 3 KTE bc of space as the May is twice the size and cost bc the May KTE (fully loaded) is about twice the price.
I have the Cyan2 and the Spring2kte. Idk about the spring 3 tho. But for my case, I personally would say they’re very different tuned. Cyan2 packs more energy, attack and a deeper stage, while Spring2 sounded more soft and laidback and a better layered imaging also a wider and taller stage. I tested them with speakers 😃
@@henryt9731 Speakers are always better to test with 👍🏻 Tim from Kitsune HiFi told me Cyan 2 is close to spring 2 component wise. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
You have a Steelcase Gesture 🔥😛🔥
@@ramlord6669 Wow, you know your office chairs. Good eye!
@@MisterChibs ❤
I2S was developed as an internal link and it relies on the clock of your source. That's rarely a good thing unless your streamer is better than your dac. The USB in on the Spring 3 is it's best input. Talk to Tim. It's taken from the MaY and uses the Spring 3's oven controlled clock for timing. It's why you just leave it on or in standby.
All ports were great but USB from my computer was mainly used for music streaming. It did not disappoint!!🍻
The Holo May has upsampling, but that was due to their AKM chips. Remember the factory burned down and to save money they decided to have just a NOS dac. Also, in talking to customers, most folks used HQ player anyways, so that's why they went without it.
@@rogerhuston8287 Yea, I hope they put OS in their next revision for the added functionality. AKM is back now but it would be so cool if they partnered with Chord and used their FPGA for OS. Haha that will never happen though. ☺️
@@MisterChibs No, it won't. HQ Player can do more than any chip can. Holo can accept up to 1.5M taps. AKM is back, but even on the Holo, they can barely do a fraction of that. Besides, as I said, most folks use HQPlayer anyways so built in is a myth. I think they've started development on the Holo May v2, be interesting to see where they go with that. I would love to see native conversion to DSD, but that puts even more strain on a processor. Tim is great over there, glad you got a chance to try it. I loved mine for 2 years.
Try NOS on the latest 2023 Denafrips firmware.... 🙂 Cheers!
@@medonk12rs I’m still on original firmware because I don’t want to mess with a good thing. That said, even updated it still won’t be native NOS like the Spring. Thanks for watching!🍻
@@MisterChibs You can go back to the old firmware... I switched back and forth between 3 version last summer, only to find out that the last 2023 release is my favourite. Cheers! :-)
@@medonk12rs cool
Tim is awesome, great guy and really helpful!
@@rogerhuston8287 agreed
It's a great dac for the money. I had mine for 2 years. I went up to the MA3 and while I like the technical clarity of the MA3, I miss the punchiness of the Spring 3.
@@rogerhuston8287 Thanks for watching!🍻
Great review and video! I bought my Spring3 KTE with PreAmp option here in Asia and it is a great DAC! There was a dramatic improvement in sound quality after an initial 50 hours which I was greatly relieved! I have my WIIM connected via optical and I only get a one time PLL lock when selecting optical, and I am using a Amazon basic cable. Maybe a future video you can list your playlist? Looking forward to your next video!
@@Yakena1 Thanks! Not sure if it’s the crappy port on my tv, optical cable, or my Xbox being weird but after 3 or 4 locking attempts it settles down and stays locked while I game. Thanks for watching 🍻
re: cyan; were you saying that the Cyan 2 needs a DDC and/or streamer, but the Spring 3 has better USB?
The Cyan 2 has good usb implementation. The Spring 3KTE has better USB implementation.

Great video. Thanks. How much are you still lovin those Cornwall’s ??
Thanks man 🍻 They were a no regret purchase and I still love em!!
Great review. I currently own the Spring 3 kte, which replaced my Venus 2.... And I also bought a Cyan 2 to compare to the Spring. I also use HQplayer to upsample everything to DSD....always. HQplayer definitely takes time to sort out, especially to get your settings right. I would say most people need more than even a couple months to really get comfortable with it.... And know what settings work best on their system. And when you get it right, it really does make a difference.... And there are literally hundreds of combinations you can pick from. Admittedly though... You need a decent computer to do all the combinations. But you save yourself money from needing to buy an expensive streamer.... So there's that.
Thanks Mike! 🍻 Yea, HQ player boot camp was intense! How do you like the Cyan 2 so far?
Fantastic value..... But, falls short of the spring 3 (using HQplayer to DSD) by just a smidge.
@@mikehuntington4440 Hi Mike, did you ever tried Audirvana? In my experience it has a very good sound too on my M3 Mac.
Will I be running into you at Toronto audio fest?
Definite Maybe! I hurt my back today falling off my Onewheel. 😅 Have to see what state it’s in when I wake up tomorrow.
It's a pity that the transformer hum isn't audible in the video. If you really want to know what effect the DC-block has on audio quality, it would serve you better to do some measurements, like THD, slew rate, noise floor, etc.

Hi, thank you for this great rerview. I am looking for an integrated amp for my ATC SCM19 V2, but don't want to rocks my pocket. Currently Hegel H300 (250w) or Hegel H190 (150w) are available in my local used-market, and the prices are very close. I am struggling whether to choose H190 or the high-power H300. The music I prefer is vocal, country, and leisurely music. Hope I can get your advice. Thank you in advance.
Thanks for watching. I don't have any experience with H300 but the 190 is great! Just speculating but the digital end of things may not be as current in the H300 since it's a much older design. I would be very careful buying used in either case. Make sure you're able to demo first.🍻
@@MisterChibs thank you so much for sharing and suggestions.
Got poly/ mojo2 combo and an iPhone 15, they work great together no white sound also even when I use only the Mojo 2 without Poly trough USB-C ports everything sounds great
Great to hear. Apple going with USBC on their phones makes finding a good cable more simple. If you ever get the noise directly from iPhone 15, try out Thunderbolt 3 or 4 rated cables. They’re made to a much higher standard. 🍻
Its not value for money at all . Stop misleading people or i get u blocked an locked .
I disagree and I'm not alone. Look back at @edhuslik 's comment from 2 weeks ago. He tried to get good synergy with separates multiple times and realized it wasn't at the level of Hegel. Many others feel the same way. Now value is subjective and I understand that you have an opinion. Cool, thanks for sharing in my H390's video. It probably would be more constructive and helpful to offer an alternative. If you're just trolling, that's entertaining in it's own way which is fine too. What I don't appreciate is being threatened. Totally ridiculous.
Mine does the same shit on SPDIF wit a pc... So, they are full of BS. It's not the cable, it's not the iphone, it's Chord Electronics. Also why everybody in the comments calls this white noise?! It's just a horrible noise. My ears were ringing for a good half an hour after.
What type of cable are you using?
We appear to be brothers from anothers mother. I as well chose the Cornwall IV, the patricians choice of a history loaded horn driven speaker hand built in Hope, Arkansas USA. God prosper and long live well.
I bought the cable and it's no longer malfunctioning, thank you very much! I have a question that I'm not sure if you can answer. Does the Mojo 2 connected to the Lightning port of the iPhone 14 Pro Max sound worse than when connected to an iPhone or iPad with a USB-C connection? When I connect it to the iPad Pro, I get the feeling that my headphones sound a bit better. I connect it to the iPad with the same charging cable that Apple includes in the box.
Glad the cable worked out. Tough to answer your question but if you’re worried about sound quality on your Pro Max, you can level things out by turning off cellular and just using wifi to stream. Hope that helps!
It’s been a life saver in cataloging my flag files.
I've heard the originals many times. The metal horns were harsh and shouty. I admit that the IV are *FAR* superior. They addressed and eliminated all of the frequency response issues. The detail comes through more cleanly, completely and smoothly now than in the past. They have ditched the inferior poly tweeter and crossovers for modern, tight tolerance parts and it sounds that way. All the strengths of the older models, none of the weaknesses. They don't shout or get peaky. They aren't your father's cornwalls. The cornwall sound more like real music than boutique high end speakers do. Those speakers mitigate and soften reality. The cornwall IV deliver realism.
Than you so much for your comparison with the originals! I’ve never heard them so it’s interesting to know that Klipsch has come a long way in that regard. Totally agree with you about sounding like real music over some much more expensive speakers. That’s specifically why I fell in love with them when I did the demo. (Check out my Road to Cornwall vid if you haven’t already). Thanks again for your comment! End game speakers!! 🍻
@@MisterChibs I have upgraded and modded klipsch for more than 25 years. The metal horn equipped gen 1 is unlistenable to me unless they are in a BIG treated room, and/or outdoors and they are powered with a soft tube amp (like Conrad Johnson) and maybe some paper in oil caps to tame the scream. The version 2 with tractrix horns was a vast improvement, but the phenolic tweeters were still peaky and veiled sounding. Not to mention. the crossover was junk. They still shouted. The new drivers and crossover in the IV are far beyond either of those. There is no need for specialized gear. Just proper space and a treated room like any other speaker.
"I just asked the company for it, and they sent me one" lol. Guess I never thought of trying that method. 🤔 Norah Jones, man? 😴
Yo, what them KEFs?
Keff R3 Meta. Will eventually get around to reviewing them. Boss level speakers!🤟
I've gone down the rabbit hole of trying to buy separates three times instead of just going with the Hegel. Can't explain why, the H390 is a no brainier, yet instead of just buying it, I keep falling into the trap of thinking I can do better with separates. Of course, you now have a huge problem with synergy with different systems and trying to match separates is nearly impossible from just reading reviews. In the long run, you'll end up spending more money anyway. I'm a slow learner, obviously. 😒
All part of your trip as long as you end up enjoying yourself. There’s something to be said for having a well matched amp with preamp. Hegel is tops in this department! Some may look at it as training wheels but I just want everything to work and sound good together. With so many other variables that come into play, at least I have a solid “home base”. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!🍻
Hello mr.chibs! your video review always helps me a lot when i choose new gears. Always thankful about it. I am headphone only environment audiophile. I have , Austrain Audio the composer, zmf atrium, erzetich charibdis. Maybe buy tungsten in near future. My current DAC is schiit audio gumby(a2). I am now considering to get one of holo audio DAC but never tried holo DAC before so its hard for me to choose one. IMHO, it is more difficult to detect the difference between decent dac(cyan2) and super high-end dac(like may) in the head-fi only system when they are compared with speaker system. So i am hesitating to spend over 4k usd for just one DAC. For now I'm happy with my gumby dac but the reason I'm buying a new DAC is that if the tube amp only supports the rca input, gumby's rca output is far worse then xlr output(bass is gimped) Thus I'm considering about whether to move on to schiit audio yggy(bigger dac) or holo dac (cyan2 or spring3) to solve this problem. Do you have experience with yggy or gumby? Can you compare them with cyan2? if you don't, I'd like to ask how much can cyan2 perform well when compared to its bigger brothers(spring, may) at the headphone-only listening environment. Thank you for reading my long concern hope you could help me.
@@rkrnddl5 unfortunately I don’t have any experience with Schiit gear yet. The Cyan 2 is an awesome DAC as long as it fits your use case. I’m in the process of making a video review on Spring 3, so stay tuned for that. The Spring is definitely a better DAC but going off of sound quality alone and ONLY using headphones is tough to call. I would still lean towards Spring 3. It just fits me better. But that’s me. You’ll see what I mean in the review. In the meantime, look specifically at all of these DACs features and how they could fit in your system. Some things you don’t think you’ll need or even appreciate can become stuff you don’t want to be without. 🍻
Very entertaining and informative, more content please!
@@dannyhamler4912 thx! Working on some! 🤟
So, what about the May? Do you love it? Is a review coming? Hope so...😊
Would love to review the May eventually. My next review is Spring 3 KTE and it's going to be a fun one! 🦊
I have a fix - a) TV > Eversolo > switch to RCA output > amp .. for watching TV b) Eversolo > Cyan > amp .. for hifi - ALSO I can just not even bother switching to the RCA’s for TV output if I’m being lazy.
@@martyn_g Thanks, good workaround for Eversolo owners. 🍻
