It seems like I am in the minority when it comes to linear power supply upgrades. I bought an Sbooster and even bought another Node 2i so I can do a side-by-side comparison of a stock node 2i with an Sbooster upgraded one. If there was a difference, it was pretty insignificant as I couldn't hear anything. Note: only using it as a network transport. My new EverSolo DMP-A6 was a pretty significant upgrade. My preamp has two coax inputs and was able to switch back and forth making the comparison very easy for me to hear.
Interesting bit on the node 2i S booster upgrade. Really curious myself but like you I would have to have an additional U2mini to properly AB. Would love to test a DMP-A6 eventually. Thanks for watching!🍻
Definitely have to recommend at least trying the very budget-friendly ifi Zen Stream for your desktop setup. I recently added it to my LS50 Meta nearfield system (Roon > ifi Zen Stream > Denafrips Iris DDC > Denafrips Ares 12th via i2s > Musical Fidelity M5si) and it was easily on par with the Hifi Rose RS150B (via USB out on both) and noticeably bested the Node (current version, USB out) and my Mac Mini (serving as my Roon core) in cleanliness / dimensionality / dynamics. And all for just $300 on the used market plus an added iPower X 15V PSU upgrade. Having purchased this recently, I have to say that using wired Ethernet, in Roon exclusive mode, and the current firmware, it’s performed completely flawlessly since I started using it a few weeks ago. Given the cost and quality, this combo has been hands down a steal and especially if all you want is specifically a quality, wired Roon endpoint. (I work for a hifi retailer so I try lot of gear.)
Thanks for your suggestion. The problem with my office setup is the Gan 1 and KC-62. I need trigger and sub out. As I said in this vid, it's the main reason I don't keep the U2 Mini up here. I don't doubt the Zen is a decent streamer and I'm up for reviewing one if sent to me though. 🍻
@@MisterChibs I caught the part about the sub trigger/standby preference, but that is odd about the heat. I leave all of my subwoofers on 24/7 and haven’t experienced any issues in years which is what I would expect to be honest. You might want to get yours looked at. And can’t recall if you addressed using high/speaker level inputs, but it’s worth trying unless you need the bass management / high-pass feature of the Node.
@@beaucauchemar My other subs go into standby while not in use and while plugged into LFE from the Node, so does the KC62. The problem with running it in high level is it keeps them running for some reason. It's a small sub with a lot of power and the housing is aluminum. I'm guessing that acts as a heat sync. Going to speak with Keff regarding this and see what they say.
@@beaucauchemar sent my zen streamer straight back when I tried one a few years ago... very problematic...get a used Lumin U2 mini w/ added BOTW/ linier PS
The most important con that I find is the lack of inputs. In my system I prioritize 2 channel audio streaming quality, but I also need to have it hooked up to my TV. I can do that with my Bluesound Node easily switching from the streamer to the optical input that I use for my TV. This is a deal breaker for me.
Hello, a week ago I installed the LPS kit for LUMIN promoted by Alvin Chee, and the difference is INCREDIBLE, throughout the bandwidth a transparency that I have never heard before, bass with great grip and I have listened to my entire collection again, almost without sleeping until dawn and dancing frequently in my listening room. I recommend Beatechnik's LPS, it has been the biggest cost/benefit improvement.
@@MisterChibs I have a question, how do you rate the sound of LEEDH to your Venus and then to your amplifier, since I use a tube pre (which I love) but what catches my attention is how direct the volume control of the LUMIN would sound. With my DAC it sounds without body, but Venus is in another league, so I would like to know your opinion. Thank you !!
@@luisrodrigonunezolguin7038 In my U2 Mini setup, I leave streamer volume fixed and let my Hegel control volume. That said, Leedh works very well in my testing. 🍻
Is the LPS installed internally? I have a Volumio RIVO and LPS50VA($1200 for the combo), coming from Beatechnik. Going into a Pontus II via RiCable Magnus USB Cable. I am expecting similar or better performance in Sound Quality to your Lumin standard…and maybe equal or close to your Lumin with the LPS. Man…I would love a side by side comparison by iiWi on these streamer-only units!!! Enjoy your system! P.S. may we please have video of you dancing in your music room, 🤓
Good honest review…I am very jealous about your 🔥flame thrower🔥😀….I am new to Lumin…I was taken back by the price of this unit and that at the price point no I²S output 🤔. It looks well made and has a great interface…but still….I am an all separates guy and going into a Pontus II DAC. Currently, like you I am moving my Pi2Design Mercury Streamer v1 to my office and am anxiously awaiting the delivery of a Volumio Rivo Streamer and LHY LPS50 VA Linear Power Supply. ($1200 for the combo from Beatechnik). The Rivo uses Volumio software which is quite nice…no front display (and its Italian Design looks are not for everyone but I love it!). It is limited to 192 kHz 24 bit output (fine with me) but provides VERY similar performance to The Lumin across the board. Based on my research and your Lumin feedback in your two most excellent systems, I am betting that the Sound Quality of the RIVO+LPS50VA may be a tier up from the Lumin…but definitely it’s equal at a much lower pricepoint. Would LOVE to to see these two streamers compared head to head by iiWi Reviews! Good work on your review!
I just picked up a used U1 mini and while it doesn't have the newer processing of the U2 I've been quite ecstatic about it and actually just did a video comparing it versus node n130. My findings were that u1 Mini is more easeful with the music. Almost like in the sense that the bluesound by comparison has this sense of nervousness to it where with the lumin that nervousness completely disappears and you're just left with this nice sense of flow and ease to the music. Personally I think that comes down to better filtering and power supply management with the U1 versus the node. By the way I'm also using the optical out only, for whatever reason in my system I find the optical sounds best, go figure
Dude , the best of the Christmas season and best to you and yours for 24’ . Thinking of upgrading my streaming…but the landline only and external DAC ..is a deal breaker….unless I can take the other 1/2 into letting me thread cables all over the house 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Thanks man! I got someone to rout Ethernet to a couple of key places and it’s way more reliable than wifi. Failing that, you can still have a wifi access point that gives you Ethernet ports. Happy new year! 🎉🍻
Mr. Chibs, you should try adding the Ifi SPIDIF ipurifier 2 on the coax from the Node to the GaN1. It greatly increases sound quality for around $150. I would be interested in knowing how close it comes to the sound quality of the U2 mini.
Have you tried one out Pete? Interesting little device. I've got an SU6 DDC that should clean things up too. One of the reviews I need to still make. 🍻
@@MisterChibs Yes I do, with the NOde and the GaN 1. Just added the ifi ethernet filter also, very nice. Looking fwd to the SU6 review. Please let us know how well it works with the U2 and the node and if it brings the Node to the U2 level.
I was really hoping people would have a few U2 jokes in the comments… but I did enjoy the review with or without you… but seriously nice review as always. Really eager to see how the DDC or even the ifi spidif device improves the sound of the node with Gan 1
I'm glad I watched your video. I would have expected the Lumin mini to have a better performance than you describe as compared to the Node. I'm considering Auralic Aries g1..1 or now Hifi Rose RS 130
Thank you very much for choosing to use LUMIN in your main listening room! Fantastically well-produced video - kudos! Great that you managed to have a chat with Angus.! BTW - If you want, you can A\B test the Leedh Processing Volume vs the 'traditional' digital volume buy turning Leedh off in the settings, although I know that means moving it into your office system again. Looking forward to your future output!
Mr. Chibs - Thanks for another helpful and informative post. Do you know what kind of SQ difference to expect from Lumin mini LPS upgrade? Also, do you have any recommendations for LPS hardware?
I've never AB'd between switch mode and linear power supplies so I have no clue what will happen or if I'll be able to discern between them. Most people I spoke with on the subject say there's a difference but I can't confirm yet. Stay tuned. 🍻
I have the Lumin U1 mini and just bought the fairly new U2. I don’t know why some of my album cover art is missing? I have all of my albums stored on an external SSD, connected to my Mac mini serving as my Roon core and are catalogued using Apple Music. I made sure all of my albums had album covers for my music, but some of them are missing when using the Minim server with the Lumin app? How do I retain all of my album covers using the minim server as I see you have all of your album covers in the video? Also, what are you using as your Roon core? Great video! Thanks!
Thanks man! I'm honestly not sure how to help with your album cover art problem. Definitely post up on the Roon support forum, they're pretty quick to respond and know their stuff. As far as my setup, I use an M1 Mac Mini and only stream with Roon through Qobuz. (no local files) Eventually, I think I'll get a dedicated Roon core. Reason being is that I find the Mac needs to be restarted once in a while to get Roon up and running again. 🍻
@@MisterChibs I see, your album cover art is from Qobuz and I don’t have any issues with my Qobuz album cover art either. It’s only my local files. I did post my question on Roon and Peter Lie of Lumin responded, but I didn’t really understand his instructions? Lol…. I don’t have any issues with my Mac mini needing a restart while using Roon. Have you turned off the power saving options when the computer is idle? I turned all of that off because the Mac mini is not running off of a battery like a laptop. That may solve your issue if you haven’t already looked into that? Thanks for the quick response!
@@DBTAudio I’ll look into power saving options. Assumed it was my user error 😅. As for the reply from Lumin, I’ll try and see if I can make sense of it when I’m back at my computer.

Thanks for your help!
great video, as I am using bluesound note and considering to buy lumin u2 mini, it's very useful info....quick question, you mentioned changing to linear power supply doesn't make different in sound, what DAC, amp and speaker in your reference system?
I haven't swapped the switch mode power supply to a Linear so not sure where you got that idea. My system has changed since, but the gear I used for this review about 10 minutes in. th-cam.com/video/JlkjPLdRgfs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BKXluyB0JDCM6Qqy&t=601 🍻
Great review. Got the mini about a month ago and I had never seen the "Roon only" mode, I am changing it ASAP. One question you are probably asked everyday: how are you showing the Roon information on the screen? It's beautiful and entertaining.
@@borisbobowski628streaming Qobus via audirvana on mac mini to Pontus 2 DAC and considering Lumin u2 mini. Nice to hear that U2 mini is no better than my current streamer. Can you please give me some comparison on SQ?
Haven’t compared the two but if you’re asking, I would just buy LUMIN U2 and don’t mess with your warranty. If you want to save $, just buy U2 Mini and see if that works without any tinkering. It’s a very good streamer in stock configuration. 🍻

If you want to hang on to the node a little longer like me, here is a couple of recommendations. - Upgrade the power supply, some say it makes no difference but that depends on the rest of your equipment, for me the sound is smoother and the background darker, might be just my imagination but at least I stopped wondering ! - Do NOT use the digital volume control of the node as it kills dynamics, get a proper preamplifier !
Glad you're enjoying them. Great band and so diligent always putting out new stuff. Diverse too. Will probably mention PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation" in my next vid. Just reading that title gives me a headache though 🤣
For me it gets switched around quite a lot! LUMIN designed the shelf for extra shielding at the connections. I didn’t realize this when making the review. 🍻
Interesting video. I wonder whether you've compared the Lumin with the internal streaming engine of the H190, which, in my opinion, is better than the Node. I have a H120 that I used to pair with the Zen Stream (also slightly better than the Node soundwise, as far as my ears could catch). When the H120 (and H190) became Roon Ready I stopped using the ZS because both streamers yielded a very similiar sound quality and signature, using the internal DAC (also a good DAC). I guess that if you're using Roon and have your Core up and running (I use a NUC) the difference between Roon Bridges/endpoints becomes rather small, albeit noticeable. Cheers
Thanks man. Haven’t tried comparing them because I always prefer going through a separate DAC to the H190. It’s DAC isn’t bad by any stretch but isn’t bit perfect with Roon. My system also sounds better with my other DACs. Check out my chord mojo 2 & Denafrips Pontus / Venus review for more detail on that 🍻
@@MisterChibs I get that and that's why I was using a Zen Dac Signature V2 between the ZS and the H120, so I would get bit perfect playback. However, I gave up on that because the H120 sounds so good with Roon and moved the Zen stack to the office. I'm sure a higher end DAC would improve things further but that'd probably mean spending almost as much as the cost of the integrated amp in a DAC. Thanks for the feedback anyway.
@@vitorgoncalves6289 If you’re happy with the way things sound, there’s no need to upgrade. If you still feel the itch, Mojo 2 was noticeably better and won’t break the bank. You can also try an Ares 12th for not much more. 👍🏻
They're both very different machines. The A8 has a DAC, preamp, 6" LCD screen, and runs a version of android OS. The U2 mini is just a streamer that concentrates on good quality signal to your existing DAC / preamp / amp. 🍻
Another fantastic video. The Lumin isnt something I would buy myself since my DAC is a roon endpoint, the lossless volume control would be interesting to try against a standalone preamp. Great work. Also whats the outro music?

hi! I tried to understand the difference between Bluesound Node and Lumin u 2 mini.... but could not. I have a very simple system. I have two Mcintosh mc 275 that I use as power amps and a T+A dac 200 that I use as pre and DAC. I have a Bluesound Node 130 and today I picked up a Lumin u2 Mini on loan from a shop for testing. was convinced that I was experiencing a difference, because through Roon I was using my Mac to upsample from PCM to DSD and I seemed to find substantial differences. Today I had Lumin upsampled from PCM to DSD 256 and I connected the Lumin via USB and the buesound via Toslink. I did cross-tests using the same music and simply switching between one and the other. boh I don´t know what to say.... they sound the same to me.
@@MisterChibs sorry my German English...... In my opinion, the difference in sound if it has to be researched so carefully, squeezing and concentrating (I'll try again today) is not worth the 2000 euro difference. it can be me... and in that case I'm glad I don't have golden ears that require certain equipment, I wouldn't appreciate it anyway... or is it my system, which already has a sound with a 'Black' background the two Mc275s sound very good... or if they are bitperfect devices... bits are bits and the DAC does the rest. The thing that I don't understand and that made me try the Lumin was that using Roon, I seemed to perceive using my Mac connected to the Dac and doing Úpsampling, at DSD 256 an audible difference. That I didn't perceive this time. but the strangest thing is that upsampling with the Lumin internally, the sound is not different from a high quality PCM, and this should not be, as the internal circuits of the dac that handle the digital conversion are different.
@@cybermau Really interesting findings. Your equipment is high end and while I haven't demoed any of it, I'm sure it must sound great. Perhaps your amps being tube based has something to do with it? There are so many variables besides that. Your speakers, ears, room acoustics, even cables can make differences. I came to all of my conclusions without any upsampling and using different equipment. Eventually I intend on trying out HQ player and upsampling through Roon, but I'm not there yet. The good news in your case is you can save the over 2000€. Much better spent elsewhere! If you're happy with the way things sound, the Node is certainly no slouch, especially if it's making no perceivable difference. 🍻 Edit: I just found this video from Steve where he discusses accuracy vs euphonic sound. He specifically mentions your MC 275 as the opposite end of the accuracy spectrum. It's more clear to me now why you might not be hearing a difference between streamers. Here's a link to the video: th-cam.com/video/d1xjn3DKm1o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-ahWp9OPiAhhx1Kj&t=403
@@MisterChibs yes, it can be, you should try these Amps and Speaker. Tube sound is different, but when they tell me that a Streamer increases Soundstage, Depth etc. ect... well I haven't seen angels playing... the two Mc275s are the latest model and are (according to what one reads) the 'least' tubed of the whole series. With the T+A the Soundstage is huge and deep. Isolating the left and right channels with the two Mc275´s further isolates the channels towards better definition. Voices sound distinct in a black background, the size of the soundstage is "Plausible" it does not extend beyond the loudspeakers to the RIGHT and LEFT but deep behind them. I´m getting an idea of how much Snake Oil is out there in some channels ... once it was turntables, tonearms and cartridges and now it is Dacs and streamers. Just because some Reviewers test devices every week that are (every week) the best they have tried and cost tens of thousands of dollars/euros..... how much are they just looking for Likes?! I tried it and saw with my own eyes or rather ears. what I actually imagined... if the devices are not flawed in construction, the Bits are Bits and it is the DAC that does the rest, despite my tube amps.... I am also lucky not to have golden ears, and yes.. I can save over 2000€.
@@cybermau I hope you're not grouping me in with the snake oil salesman. My positive opinion on the Lumin is that only because it's what I experienced. No angels singing, just better than the Bluesound Node with MY equipment. I purchased the U2 mini with my own money and don't care weather or not you buy one from your dealer or like / dislike this video. Having said that, you came on here asking if it's possibly your equipment and I assumed you actually wanted me to try and help answer. So I actually did this. I went out of my way to research your gear and found that video of Steve (whom I respect as a reviewer) saying it's a warm and euphonic amp and on the opposite end of the spectrum of the highly resolving solid state amp he picked out. Now it makes sense to me that would get in the way of perceiving detail elsewhere in your sound chain. That said, I haven’t tried your gear out. I have however tried out tube amps and McIntosh are among the ones I demoed. They’re great and fun to listen to. I just prefer class AB for a number of reasons. Now even though it was my intent to help, I can see from your response that you have somehow taken offence. No good deed goes unpunished 😅 This was not my intent at all. Enjoy your system and your Node. I happen to like my Node and use it in an other room. It’s great.

It is a luxury item. But its also a very high quality toy. I am using as a Roon endpoint. Everything maxed out on Roon. Yes its better than Roon through the Aries. Much better. I'm sure your heard this before.....but you should try a raspberry pi with a linear power supply. Honestly, you might be surprised that it keeps up with the U2
Hey Mike, at the time I bought the Lumin I remember looking at an audio file raspberry pi (forget the brand) as a prospect but they were not available due to chip shortage. I’m not apposed to trying one out in future though.
Nice review 👍 It seems you get 5% more performance fo 300% more money. I asked iiwi reviews that reviews tons of dacs and streamers which influence the sound more ? Dac or streamer he said that definitely dac more influence and important to the end sound , correlate what i thought at first. Conclusion: better to invest the major monyon dac and minor on streamer, I built mine based on raspberry pi 4 with ropeexl and happy with that although i know its limitations regarding connections an user interface. Also use mconnect and tidal. Dac is denafrips. As you said, its in the deminition return territory (lumin).
Yes, speakers / amp / dac / and even room treatment make more of a difference than the streamer. A streamer still matters once everything else is at a certain level though. The difference I noticed was more than 5% but I think features, use-case, and reliability are equally important to factor in. Thanks for watching! 🍻
So buying lumin u1 mini would get you 95% there and with the savings apply to to good quality Dac a Pontus ii 12th or Gustard r26 or save even more and go with wiim pro plus, eversolo dmp-6 as transport or ifi zen streamer or save all the eggs and go with gustard r26 and use its internal streamer/renderer with roon
@@MisterChibsThis is an important point. Everything you mention is true…my system is digital input focused (streaming and CD/SACD playback), and I did not revisit my streamer situation until I had DAC, Equalizer, Preamp, Power Amp, Speakers, Subs and Room Treatment "to a place". 😀 Then I thought it made sense to go back to the front end. 👉🏼LPS on my modem, Network Switch, and my on-the-way LHY LPS50VA and Volumio Rivo. I have the Node 2i used with the Denifrips Ares ll as it’s Dac. I’ve been considering upgrading it with a power supply from LHY affiliated with Alvin from Vinshine audio. @@cruzingrsx4484 same here. Enjoying the pursuit! And I can't state with ANY certainty that an LPS on a Node would make no improvement. Maybe it does in other scenarios. I think I would invest in a higher end streamer and try that route before modding my node though

@@MisterChibs There probably are very minor difference between these streamers, but they are so slight as to be imperceptible and definitely not things the average person should even consider spending money on unless they have the cash to burn.,
@@NeverTakeNoCut-offs You make a good point and I can appreciate where you're coming from. Spending the extra $ on a streamer and not hearing much of a difference would be frustrating for anyone. Having said that, my experience is to the contrary. Maybe my gear, ears, age, room acoustics in both setups are not average. But in my testing, there is a noticeable difference. Now I'm in no position to say what "average" is in this hobby, only reporting on my personal experience . Qualifying an opinion as universal is flawed. The lid is made to go past the connection points for performance in blocking out nearby interference.
Makes sense, thanks for the info. 🍻

Going to speak with Keff regarding this and see what they say.

sent my zen streamer straight back when I tried one a few years ago... very problematic...get a used Lumin U2 mini w/ added BOTW/ linier PS
Nothing beats Bluesound Node’s versatility. 🍻
Right but this is more of a purist piece as opposed to the node which is designed to be more versatile.
Thanks for sharing your experience Luis. 🍻

Based on my research and your
Lumin feedback in your two most excellent systems, I am betting that the Sound Quality of the RIVO+LPS50VA may be a tier up from the Lumin…but definitely it’s equal at a much lower pricepoint. Would LOVE to to see these two streamers compared head to head by iiWi Reviews! Good work on your review!
Thanks for watching!
Nice, Lumin makes great stuff! 🍻

Mr. Chibs, you should try adding the Ifi SPIDIF ipurifier 2 on the coax from the Node to the GaN1. It greatly increases sound quality for around $150. I would be interested in knowing how close it comes to the sound quality of the U2 mini.

Hey Mr Chibs, GREAT video and advice as usual... love your style, man! KKEP IT UP.

That may solve your issue if you haven’t already looked into that? Thanks for the quick response!

Good suggestions! 🍻

About connecting cables to the u2 mini: How often do you do that? I’ve done it once when connecting it to my system after I bought it!
very well done! bravo!
Thanks for watching! 🍻
Thank for the video. How the Lumin U2 mini compere to the Eversolo 8 ?

Thanks for sharing your findings. You had me until the end where you said "boh I can't say, they sound the same to me." So they don't sound the same?
Edit:
I just found this video from Steve where he discusses accuracy vs euphonic sound. He specifically mentions your MC 275 as the opposite end of the accuracy spectrum. It's more clear to me now why you might not be hearing a difference between streamers.
Here's a link to the video:
th-cam.com/video/d1xjn3DKm1o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-ahWp9OPiAhhx1Kj&t=403
It’s great.

I asked iiwi reviews that reviews tons of dacs and streamers which influence the sound more ? Dac or streamer he said that definitely dac more influence and important to the end sound , correlate what i thought at first.

Looking forward to the implementation!
I have the Node 2i used with the Denifrips Ares ll as it’s Dac. I’ve been considering upgrading it with a power supply from LHY affiliated with Alvin from Vinshine audio. As the LPS I would go with an Sbooster if I did it. That would bring the overall cost of my streaming system to about $1,100, the rest of the system is dialed in I feel
Someone else commented earlier saying that they couldn't hear the difference in their upgraded Node2i. Let me know if you end up going through with it. Genuinely curious.🍻
A colleague of mine did a LPS upgrade to his Node. He reported no noticeable change. For whatever that's worth. .
@@erics.4113 thanks! I was skeptical of any improvement it would make. This rabbit hole is deep and there’s always an upgrade available in Hifi. In the meantime I’m enjoying the journey ✌🏼
@@cruzingrsx4484 same here. Enjoying the pursuit! And I can't state with ANY certainty that an LPS on a Node would make no improvement. Maybe it does in other scenarios. I think I would invest in a higher end streamer and try that route before modding my node though
I have the LHY power supply for the node 2i and yes very worthwhile upgrade. massive improvement
$3,600 here. Not paying that for a streamer with no DAC. I’ll keep my Node, it gets the job done as a transport.
Nothing wrong with the Node! 🍻
U2 mini another dimension compares to node.
no i2s no deal
Shame they didn’t include it.
The display that size is pretty useless especially when you put it in the middle of your speakers.
@@rppwwn8321 Because of its high contrast, you’d be surprised how legible it is from a distance. Much better than any 6 - 8 inch lcd. Regardless, I keep mine off because there’s an 85” displaying with Roon. 🍻
This video tells you nothing.
Drink a glass of warm milk and try watching again. Make sure your sound is on.
I have this,a wiim pp, and the node. There is NO discernable difference between any of these. This is a scam and a total waste of money. Get better speakers before this unless money is no object for you.
Thanks for sharing your experience. What gear are you running these streamers with?
@@MisterChibs My current main setup is a schiit Yggdrasil, Harbeth monitor 40.3, and a Yamaha s3200. The harbeths are the star of the show, however
@@NeverTakeNoCut-offs interesting! I doubt your gear is the bottleneck here.
My advice is demo first or buy with a good return policy.🍻
