    The GaN-1 is a true digital amplifier that accepts only digital signals. I used the Minidsp SHD Studio to pair with the GaN-1. The lossless DSP volume control(no bit truncation) of the MiniDSP makes it a perfect match with the GaN-1 and the result is phenomenal.

    GanFet is fkn awesome. There are a few brands using it ..but rare still. Orchard Audio sells kits for DIY amp chassis.
    This one .. can be DAC/ preamp direct.. whish is great.. but doesn't fit in older systems with a classic preamp. etc.

    *Update on Wiim Mini compatibility.* This is a cut / paste from Peachtree’s Facebook group.
    “Attention GaN 1 owners and potentia l GaN 1 owners, we do NOT recommend using the WiiM brand of streamers with the GaN 1 at this time. It is our understanding that when the digital volume control in the WiiM is engaged (the internal DSP is turned on), the sampling rate of the Wiim is set to 48kHz. But, more importantly, the product is audibly noisier than when the internal DSP is bypassed. This is NOT an issue in the GaN 1 or when using a Bluesound NODE with the GaN 1.
    Until the WiiM products are updated, which may require different internal hardware/DSP processing, we can NOT recommend them with our GaN 1. We also recommend that if you are using a WiiM streamer with any of our OTHER products, do NOT engage the functions that utilize the internal DSP, to achieve the best sound quality. The WiiM steamers are attractive Wi-Fi solutions due to their low price, but they have design limitations that should be understood to get the best sound quality from them.”
    When I tried this combo, I did not notice extra noise but also did not directly AB the Wiim mini against my Bluesound Node. It’s a shame the Wiim’s internal dsp has to get involved and on top of that, it’s not even bit perfect. Maybe this can get fixed in one of Wiim’s many firmware updates. I’ll update if and when they do. 🙃

    Just received GaN1 and my first impression is great! I think NAD M33 may need an upgrade. This sounds better than Michi X3.
    Enjoyed watching your review.
    I also find roon difficult operating. I own Antipodes K50, Vault2i, MiniDSP SHD studio, Aurender N20.
    I have trouble setting it up with roon cores, simply they didn’t work after new roon updates. 😢 need to figure out.
    I found somewhat bright and harsh in highs with GaN1.
    Gonna find out if streamer makes difference.
    I tested GaN1 with Devore O/96, Mon Acoustic PlatiMon VC One, and B&W805 D3. All sounded amazing with GaN1. Very impressive for the price! 🎉🎉🎉

    Very interesting! Glad you tested the amp with the Klipsch Speakers! I‘m thinking about getting a pair of Forte IV or Sourcepoint 10s. I‘m still undecided. The amp/streamer combo really could work. What do you mean by saying that HDMI doesn‘t work with some TVs? As an alternative, I thought about a Leak Stereo 230 and an Ifi Zen Streamer.

    Big props for your (production) quality. Very pleasant to watch!
    Question: I did hear some say the gan fet tech might bring potential for a tube sound in a solid state. It seems like this isn’t the case with the GAN1.
    > Is that correct and do you know of any other amps that are able to do this besides the Vincent SV237mk(2) or Kinki Audio CHoco?

    • @MisterChibs
      @MisterChibs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! No, the GaN1 does not sound like a tube amp. I don’t know of any Gan amps that output tube like sound but I’m guessing it could be possible? Having said that, I wouldn’t hold your breath. If you want warm tubey sound, best off getting tubes. Ideally it would be great having both tube and solid state if budget permits. Failing that, the GaN1 is a good start.🍻

    I usually use an ultraRendu with the Singxer SU-6 but just changed to the new Holo Audio Red (streamer with zero jitter out direct to the GaN1). Control via Roon including volume. Hope you try it. More clarity than the Holo Audio May KTE plus Serene going to a Pass X250.8. Way cheaper (similar cost to the cables alone on the other system), runs cool and way less power consumption.

    I’m running the GaN1 with the Node combo, but I upgraded to the Teddy Pardo lps for the node and also use a ifi spdif purifier2 on the coax. The GaN1 is a revelation and my Triangles have never sounded better. Replaced a Rega Elex R and NAD C658 with the GaN1/Node. Only complaint is the lossy digital volume on the Node. Will look to upgrade that in the future. Eyeing the Lumin U2 mini or the new ifi Neo Stream, potentially. Any recommendations?

      Check out the Pros and cons of this video, more specifically the bit on versatility you'll see the Lumin U2 Mini Easter egg I dropped. Still testing it out right now but the Lumin does boast lossless volume control. I haven't checked out ifi's offerings so can't comment on that. Hope this helps. 🍻

    • @chrisfluke459
      @chrisfluke459 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d be interested to hear your impressions on the U2 mini vs the node. Especially at lower volumes. It would be hard to drop BluOS for another streamer ui, but performance is king. I wish there were more streaming transports on the market (that handle volume like Lumin), but I understand the general consumer wanting something more plug n’ play. Sucks to have to pay for the DAC portion of a unit, just to bypass it.

    Thanks for the review. Just ordered a Gan 1 along with a MiniDSP Flex because I don't need streaming. I just use an Apple TV 4K connected to an HDMI switch which outputs coax. Plan to feed coax to the MiniDSP flex for volume control and room correction then straight into the Gan 1. Just trying to decide on bookshelf speakers. Either the KEF R3 Meta or Buchardt S400MK2. The only part of of your review that concerned me was that you said the Gan 1 was about equivalent to a chord mojo 2 DAC...was hoping it would sound at least as good as an R2R dad like a Denfrips Areas 12th....

    • @MisterChibs
      @MisterChibs  ปีที่แล้ว

      So much to say here. First off, I doubt you'll regret ordering the GaN 1. I'm eventually going to make a follow video on how I've been using mine and how invaluable it's become. Now - as far as bookshelves, I haven't tried either of those BUT hear me out. Keff LS50 Metas with more low end? - Sign me up for That!! The R3 Metas are definitely on my radar and where I would personally steer towards. As to, your last concern: I wouldn't worry about R2R at this stage of your trip. Remember, I'm not comparing with Ares as I've never used one in my system. I'm comparing with a much more expensive Venus DAC. Having said that, look at R2R as a different flavour. Yes, it can definitely be preferable but this isn't apples to apples. You don't get R2R in an all in one package like the GAN 1. You'd have to spend quite a lot more and deal with added complexity, wires, interconnects etc. Save R2R for an other system / trip. Okay, i think that's all for now and hope it helps! Let me know what you end up with. 🍻

      @@MisterChibs - got my GaN 1 today! Also received my MiniDSP Flex (digital version). They work great together. I have an HDMI switch which outputs COAX > MiniDSP Flex which has a remote control and does Pre-amp, Dirac Room Correction and EQ (not using this yet) > GaN 1. Connected to my HDMI switch is an Apple 4K which I use for audio and video airplay and a PS 5. The DSP for room correction does wonders. Currently just have a budget pair of bookshelf speakers from 1991 connected to it. They sound great! GaN 1 is clean and with room correction, even though the speakers are close to the wall, it provides a deep, holographic sound stage with nice imaging. I recommend you give room correction a try and share your results in a future video :)

      @@MisterChibs Will do! Temporarily using NEAR 10-M speakers - never heard them sound so good, but I'm upgrading some KEF Q100s - adding internal bracing, damping and new cross overs. Will see how that goes. Ultimately though, I will be getting another set of Buchardt S400 MK2s. In my space, I don't have the luxury of pulling speakers away from the wall and although with the right space, I think I'd enjoy the KEF R3 Meta (also love the aesthetics), I think the Buchardt will fare better in my room. Also the slightly warm nature of the Buchardt should pair nicely with he GaN 1.

    No volume display is a negative for the node, not the gan 1. I don't know any amps that have volume displays. Another plus, you save a lot of money not having to buy a dac and only 1 interconnect.

      Comparing the Gan 1 as an integrated when "No volume display" was mentioned. The way I'm currently using my BS Node, it's also connected to my Headphone amp with volume set to fixed. So I have to be SUPER careful when switching to my loudspeakers. DAC-less is a definite plus! 🍻

    • @MisterChibs
      @MisterChibs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @No sht Sherlock I think the way Rel subs work is they piggy back on the binding posts directly from the amp (Correct me if I’m wrong). If this is the case, I could use something like a Wiim mini / Wiim pro that doesn’t have a sub port to connect to. That makes the Rel more versatile in that case.

    • @erics.4113
      @erics.4113 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MisterChibs I have a stereo pair of rel, and tie in their connections with my bananas at the speaker connection. That way if I want to rotate amps or speakers, the rel connection is incorporated into my speaker cable. It is also tapping the signal AFTER it has traveled the length of the speaker cable first. So if you believe your speaker cable adds any special flavoring to the whole equation, you're getting it to your subs in addition to the speaker terminals.

      @@MisterChibs I use a pair of t7x. Capable of texture and tone and very articulate bass indeed, but they are -3dB at something like 30ish Hz so they aren't the extension kings like the Kef kc62... It 'feels' like their in-room is a little better than the specs indicate. But that's my subjective take, I haven't measured in-room response.

  • @joeg3763
    @joeg3763 ปีที่แล้ว

    They can call it a DAC-less design, but in essence, wouldn't the amp itself just be a DAC? It would simply be one with a very high output, not a traditional low level DAC that then gets further amplification in the analog world. Say what you want, but what goes to a speaker is analog. As to a wife who tells you to get your stereo out of the living room and back to the basement - time to find a new wife! lol
    I would like to see a wave of traditional amps/receivers coming down the line using the Gallium transistors. Comparison will make more sense then. I do agree there are some reasons to have interest in these devices (efficiency, heat transmission), but since PWM supplies have become a thing, there has been an extra level of reliability issues introduced. A transformer, bridge rectifier, and supply caps is inherently simple, very reliable, and a simple fix in the rare case of failure - which if anything, is decades down the road. PWM supplies are component laden, and with many active devices in play - not an easy fix, plenty of things that can fail, and not too many techs that are adept at diagnosing them. Surface mount stuff often doesn't help the latter.
