    I love your finished pages! Beautiful color work. I've been coloring for around 2 years now and you are so right about getting to know your medium and how it performs. I only have 5 books. I used to have 7 but I donated a Christmas themed book as I bought it way before I understood what quality illustrations are and it really wasn't what I wanted. Johanna Basford's Christmas book will be my next purchase. I also donated one of the Mythographic books (I can't remember which one) and I absolutely regret it because I was so intimidated by the illustrations. Now that I have some experience under my belt, I wish I had that book back 😂 I absolutely do not recommend those books for beginners but I wish I would have had the forethought to just keep it instead of donating it now that I have a bit more self confidence. Jane Maday has some really cute books, mostly flowers and little animals and birds but all of her books are one sided and she uses really good paper, at least the one I have does) and I've used alcohol markers in her books before. You will get bleed through but it doesn't matter because her pages are blank on the back side of all her illustrations. I have to say that Johanna Basford' is hands down my favorite illustrator. I know lots of people rave about the Romantic Country books by Eriy but honestly, the one I have isn't my favorite and probably won't buy another. It's a nice book with quality paper and her illustrations are really good, it's just not my favorite. Her line work is somewhat bold and I much prefer thinner line work. ❤

      Ah, the eternal struggle of choosing the perfect background color! I'm still learning this myself, but I would suggest either using the lightest or darkest colour in your chosen colour palette. That way, the illustrations will pop off the background. Hopefully that helps!

I bought the new extra colours individually online from the UK and they are some of just fave colours in the set. If you’re going to make the investment you might as well get the full set, right!? Europa is one mod my all time fave books! Boulea de Poils is gorgeous!!! You should totally get it!! Also Grains of Gold by Hanna Karlzon is a compilation of pages from a range of her books! You are slowly convincing me I really need to get one of Rita Berman's travel books! I was colouring in Magical Jungle while watching this video (after not colouring a ingle page since I got it 😬), I too have Johanna as my majority illustrator. For the Inktense you could get a couple of open stock of colours you'll use the majority of - I got some Polychromo and Chromoflow greens this week to see which set I'd like to save up for

    I also always wait for sales. My first set of pencils was a Faber Castell red (for children) that I got from the back to school isle, but then I got 100 intense for €122 (that's less than the price for 72), and 60 Albrecht Durer for €54 (less than the price for 36). I just had to wait quite a while to be able to get them... (a year in the case of the AD ones). But I'm patient, and at least now I know that if my colouring sucks, it's not the supplies. Also, I noticed that the French versions of the books are always much cheaper and on similar paper (at least on Amazon Spain), so I get the French versions. Also have a whishlist, and I have noticed that at some point e.g. Hanna Karlzon and Maria Trolle have at least a book at a much lower price vs. the regular one. I got my Dutch editions (usually much thicker paper) for under €10. Probably this won't work in Australia, but for people in Europe it can be amazing.

    yess i also use karma to email me when prices drop and i use swagbucks extension to redeem for giftcards for amazon which i get by accumulating points from either shoppin on other websites likes walmart or ebay or aliexpress and a bunch others or from doing daily tasks. rn ive a 10cad amazon ca giftcard to use and a 5cad one. this prime day sale didnt have that much stuff i wanted on sale so i only got 2 things non coloring related. i also have that witches coloring book i got the bind up of 3 in 1 (which turns out cheaper in the long run if u plan to buy all 3 individually) like a month ago and ive been coloring on it non stop with markers (which i hadnt been using in a long time) so rn i dont plan to buy any new coloring books bc ive just been coloring in this one and havin fun. some of my ohuhus that ive been using on these colorin pages are drying which sucks.

    Amazon paper really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. I'd much rather color on it than some others. Of the books I've purchased for myself, my least favorite paper is in Lulu Mayo's A Million books. So many regular colored pencil brands are miserable on it. The fact that it can take tiny amounts of water fairly well is the thing that has kept me from ripping them to shreds. Gives me an excuse to play with watercolor pencils, if nothing else. And, yet, there's still worse. In 2018, someone gave me a few Kappa Publishing books (probably from the dollar store). The paper was so smooth (and even reflected a tiny bit of light), I couldn't get much pencil on it, but all I had at the time was the pack of 50 Crayola pencils (Crayola pencils were still pretty good pencils back them, I could sharpen them, without breaking the sharpener). The easiest "trick" to coloring on Amazon paper is something Alyce Keegan's Kit and Clowder coloring classes reminded me of. Small pencil strokes are the key to filling in the valleys in paper tooth. When you color using long strokes, the pencil tip skips over a lot of valleys, and pigment is mostly added to the hills. So you're left with lots of white speckles of paper tooth showing through. Additionally, if you try to burnish (fill in the rest of the tooth) with "heavy pressure," the surface of the paper turns sort of fuzzy looking. You may be able to temporarily get a little more pigment down, but it will fade and fuzzy up again. So, in order to work around that, you need to use small strokes, in lots of light layers. In the end, burnishing with "heavy pressure," as so many TH-camrs advocate, is bad for your hand. Over time, you'll create repetitive stress injuries. I have long-term problems from other repetitive stress that couldn't be helped. Believe me, you don't want that kind of pain in ten or twenty years, just because of something as trivial as coloring. If you can't have, or don't want, a lot tools in your coloring process, your next simplest solution is probably a solvent of some sort. Something as simple as an inexpensive alcohol colorless blender marker can help break down pencil pigments down a little bit, so it fills the paper tooth. Various brands make liquid blender pens now (Derwent and Speedball all are the ones that come to mind). I've never tried the Derwent. I wasn't very impressed with the Speedball one, because the nib frayed with pretty light use. Many household solvent can be used: petroleum jelly, rubbing alcohol, and various oils. Some leave residues. Colouring Chemist has a couple of comparison videos. Then, there's the more professional blending solvent. Odorless mineral spirits is often used to blend colored pencils. However, it's both flammable and toxic, so it's not for everyone. There's also Zest It. It's hard to obtain here in the US, so I've never tried it. I don't know if it's a form of OMS. Then, there's something you've already discovered: basing. Some people base with alcohol or water based markers, some use soft pastels, some use acrylic paint pens, and some use watercolor pencils (or regular watercolor paint). When it comes to water soluble pencils, one can activate them with: water in a water brush (using very little water), an alcohol colorless blender marker, A Tombow (water based) colorless blender, 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. I had been experimenting with something for quite a while, before Colouring Chemist discovered it, and let the cat out of the bag. Using Holbein Meltz to activate watercolor pencils. I put some in an empty Copic marker. It works really well. However, the price of the Meltz went back to $12 USD on Amazon, pretty quickly after that comparison video, where she tried it. Not that $10 is much cheaper. Lol. It works really well, I'm just not certain how long I'll be able to excuse the price, if it continues to increase. Although, when using it in the Copic marker, instead of with a brush, or in a water brush, makes it go a lot farther. Amazon paper is just like everything else: you have to try different things. Figure out what works best for you. It could be worse... In the 80s, some coloring book paper was very gray and newspaper like paper. And sometimes there were large areas with lumps, due to flaws in the pulp. Impossible for everyone to color on really well.

      @apicturedpurpose วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow thank you so much for taking the time to give myself and others all these tips! They are so helpful 😍 I think I was a BIT too quick to judge the Amazon paper. Since filming this video, I’ve definitely found a lot more ways to enjoy colouring on the paper. And yes, I’m definitely concerned about damaging my hands in the long run, so I’ll look into those blending methods. Thank you again! 🙌🏻❤️

    I use the amazon wish list a lot. I lucked out a ton last week. Target stores here in the usa had a buy 2 get 1 free sale on books and movies. Well amazon decided to price match that sale ( on selected items ). They even had a spend $50 and save 20% off coupon that stacked. There was a huge amount of coloring books from my wish list that were a part of that sale. I splurged. I had a gift card from my birthday and i got whatever I could. They just came yesterday. I am so excited. Most of my collection has been just amazon paper coloring books because they are cheap and cute. I finally have some high quality books and I can't wait to start coloring in them. Michael's craft store sent me a $10 and a $5 off any purchase coupon and a 40% off any 1 item coupon. Sadly they couldn't be used on books, but I finally did get a set of pastels. Now I just need to save up for some good markers and I will be in coloring heaven. I haven't used markers before but I really want to try them. Anyway, enjoy your goodies! 💜

    If you don't mind used books, check out your used bookshops, they usually have a coloring section. I also use places like Thrift Books, World of Books, Book Outlet to hunt for coloring books. It also makes it fun to flip through to find what has been colored and see if I can fix it. Most of the time maybe 1-2 pages have been colored, most of the time they are brand new. The worst was A Million Unicorns, with about half the pages scribbled on by a child. 😂 But I salvaged about 25 pages, not bad for $3. So try used bookstores, thrift shops, garage sales! I had an amazing haul from an estate sale once. RIP to them, but their Hannah Karlzon, Maria Trolle, and a couple of Japanese artists found themselves a good home where they will be much appreciated. It made my day! 😊

I am such an impulse shopper, but currently need to stick to a budget. There are so many videos out there of people sharing their big hauls or that are full of expensive items. So I really appreciated seeing your video that had a budget closer to mine. Also, I loved your idea of setting a $30 monthly limit and if you want something that costs more, to save up for it. I am with you on the rules for spending! I love how everyone has different methods! For example, I'm don't allow myself to buy another coloring book until I've colored a specific number of pages. Currently the number is 3 times the number of books I have, and I currently have 4 books, so I have to finish 12 pages before I can get another. I'm so close! I'm a really slow colorist and have a lot of hobbies so it takes a long time for me to finish that many, so far this year I've only finished 9 pages, but I have 2 WIPs (one is a 2 page spread) that are both almost done! Picking which book to get next is so hard! There are so many amazing books! Last week I had a very dramatic Hannah Karlzon coloringbook showdown! I watched flip through of all her books and made a tally of how many pages I liked. But there was a tie between Spirit Animals and Grains of Gold. To break the tie I watched flip throughs again but this time gave each page a 1 to 5 score and totalled the scores, and can you beleive it? THEY TIED AGAIN! So to try and break that tie I counted how many pages in each book got a score of 5 and finally got a winner! But it was really close still, Spirit Animals got 28 and Grains of gold got 25. And then... sometimes I break my rule.... my husband gifted me Mythographic Wild Summer last month as a late birthday gift, and this morning I bought Kerby Rosanes Kaliedomorphia (a compilation book of all his best morphia pages) because I already have Colormorphia (the other morphia compilation book) and it is their devine right as 2 sister compilation books to be together. Two parts of a whole! Basically, one book! And! I'll basically have everything worth having from ALL his morphia series in just this "one" book! Sorry I always leave such long comments, it's just such fun to talk about coloring! I can't help myself!

    • @MyStarseedColoring

      That book rule is a good one!! I think I have over 50 books now, it'd take me AGES though lol. I just try to budget limit and reeally think about what I'm getting.

    • @solod2087
      @solod2087 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MyStarseedColoring oh man yeah that would take forever if you did it how I did. I'm hoping this method will lead me to finishing books as I build my collection. It also gets me actually coloring! If I didn't have a rule based on pages colored I'd just buy a ton of books and never use them, I know myself! Hahaha I love how we all have the same hobby and we all tackle it in our own unique ways!

    • @MyStarseedColoring
      @MyStarseedColoring 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@solod2087 So true! I do color a lot, average about 8-10 pages per month, but that's partially thanks to my channel. The channel is of course another reason I tend to get new books though, I like getting new releases I am fairly certain I'll like to do flipthroughs for the community. Luckily that does mean I get a lot of coloring done in my books! Does mean I spread out the love and it'll take longer to finish any one in particular. Working on Worlds of Wonder consistently though, I'm a quarter done after a year and a half of owning it!

    • @solod2087

      @MyStarseedColoring it's folks like you that do the flipthroughs that make it possible for me to have dramatic Hannah Karlzon book comparison tournaments to help me choose my next book! So thank you souch for your contribution to the community! I appreciate you! Also, if people can collect sports jerseys and shot glass, we can totally collect coloring books! Collecting them for the sake of it is also very valid!

      I love the long comments so never apologise! I think it’s great that you are so thorough and thoughtful with your book shopping and selection. I think it’s so much more gratifying at the end of the day and leads to a lot less regret and guilt ✨

    This was so fun to watch! All great choices! I think setting a spending budget is such a good idea...it is way too easy to overspend when it comes to this hobby 😂 I love Enchanted Earth and A Million Baby Animals. I hope you enjoy your new books and supplies 💕

    I don't know how I was so lucky but last week (9 July), I bought a set 132 Prismacolor Premier Color Pencils for AUD 132.00 (free postage) fr Amazon. I was in Tokyo when I ordered so dunno if that made a difference. Order arrived in Australia on Wed ie one week later. Def made me realise I need alerts. Oh--I just looked and they're now AUD$185.

    Hello, on Kerby Rosanes, I was intimidated in the beginning, but his books I find are the best to use brushes to set backgrounds, then use pencils for accents and contrasts. I would definitely recommend giving one of them a try. For background Johanna Basford is my go to illustrator.

    So many good tips 😄 I sometimes struggle with picking a color palette, even though I’ve been coloring for years 😅 So it’s great having different ways of finding a color palette or inspiration. The page turned out beautifully 🩷

    Awesome tips! Colour combos have always been a pretty natural thing for me too. But I definitely have my go-tos that I love. Which is why I started my palette challenge each month to challenge myself (and anyone else who’d like to) to use colour combos I don’t usually gravitate towards. I’d love to invite you to join in if you’d like. Details are on my channel and Instagram account.
