Such a great video. Especially for people who are on the fence about trying a new medium. And I love how you try to do multiple types of backgrounds for each of these videos. Thanks for sharing!! ☺️
Wow! You picked that up quickly! And you are definitely not giving yourself enough credit! The northern lights page and the final apage are actually stunning IMHO. Well done, thanks for sharing with us as always!
Wonderful video!! I have to say your channel has brought me so much joy in the 2~ months since I have been watching. I recently binged all of your tutorials and I cannot wait to try all your background ideas in my adult coloring books. I just purchased some watercolor pencils and next week I plan to get the Caran D’Ache Neocolor II’s. I have never considered myself an artistic person but you have me craving the desire to color/create. It seems fun and doable because of your videos. It seems dramatic to say, but you have changed my life 🫶🏻 art has been missing from my life and it has never been more needed than now!
I am so thrilled to hear that my channel has brought you joy and inspired you to create! That’s the reason I created this channel in the first place. Thank you so much for your kind words and support. It is seriously appreciated 🫶🏻💖
Hi Kyra I hope you’re well and keeping cool.. up here in North Queensland we are having horrible heatwaves.. u have done amazing job with those oil pastels thank you for sharing ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxxx
You can use a smooth glass plate/pallet (not plastic as it stains/doesn't wash completely clean) and put oil pastel on that and then pick it up with the brush and then apply to the coloring page. Also, you can use orderless mineral spirits (like Gamsol or Zest-it) with a brush to blend/smooth the oil pastel you apply to the page. Enjoy your experimenting!
Nice I like your last one the best, with the clouds. I have never tried oil pastels and I'm not sure that I will. I do appreciate this video and the way you did it though, definitely makes it less scary and less unknown!
I've been on the oil pastel backgrounds from watching Maia's channel. Let's just say i went a little crazy " collecting "sets ! I love them in my coloring books. I haven't tried using my acrylic tools for blending. Blending with my finger works best but I am very limited in using this one bc I have severe arthritis. I love your channel. You are fearless, inspiring and so talented. ✨️
It sounds like you’ve found your perfect coloring medium! I’m glad you’re finding success with oil pastels. ❤️ Thank you so much for your support, I seriously appreciate it ✨
This was so informative, and all backgrounds were so pretty! You're a great (and bad, haha) influence for these mediums; I've already purchased a set of Neocolor II after your last video to help me get over my fear of backgrounds
I've wanted to try northern lights also - thanks for the great idea! And the last one looked fantastic -- you taped it well - looked less messy than masking fluid. I've only tried oil pastel one time as an all-over background and sprayed with a fixative but I still had some blur into my pencil work. Will take so much more practice to not mess up the rest picture.
I literally just ordered some oil pastels today, this video couldn't have come at a better time lol this was super helpful, I'll definitely keep everything in mind when I try them
I like the idea of using them in theory... but it definitely takes experimentation and patience to figure out. No matter how many people i watch using them, i still seem to come out with different effects (wanted or unwanted) every time. I think the brand and texture of each one makes a huuuuuuge difference int he experience too. I shall continue to try and find a brand and technique thats right for me.
I think the northern lights background turned out wonderfully! I also really want to do a northern lights background but can’t decide what medium to try. I’m thinking neo II’s. I absolutely love when colorists use oil pastels in their work, but I don’t think they are for me personally. I am very uncoordinated and could see getting oil pastels on everything and making such a mess!
This video came at the best time, I just got a set secondhand. Ive noticed them trending too so wanted to try them, I love my Neocolour 2s but I like the idea of getting messy and using my finger to blend :) Thanks for this video!! Your sky scene turned out so beautiful
I love this. Tip for using oil pastels in colouring books I find a slightly more firm pastel works better on a smoother surface and I use the softer oil pastels on top as my final layer if I need more blending. At spotlight you can get their home brand for like $10 and you get 20 I think. For your first time using oil pastels you did really good you should be proud of yourself ❤
Hi Kyra! I’ve been on the fence quite a while with oil pastels. I don’t like that they’re messy and often they don’t seemed blended as well as I would like. I loved your third attempt! That sky and water was perfection! If I could get that result I’d get them. I guess I don’t have enough confidence in myself. They’re in my Amazon cart along with the blenders. I need to have a think. Thanks for another awesome video!!! ❤
I was definitely on the fence about them for a while as well! But I’m glad I gave them a try. I’m looking forward to do some more experimenting in the future to see what other effects I can create. Let me know if you end up giving them a try! 🥰🌈
An additional blending method that works really well is just using a paintbrush and a small amount of odourless mineral spirits. I've used that on single-sided pages and it actually didn't bleed through to the other side, so it's possible it would even work okay in thicker double-sided books. It also makes the oil pastels less likely to smudge or rub off on your fingers.
Love the Northern Lights if or when i attempt it I will leave out the white and yellow.. I really loved the other colors you used first. As for painting first with acrylic then going over with pastel never tried it so another thing I will definitely try ❤👍🏼 thank you for a helpful video
I was not going to purchase any because they look so messy, but Jen at Jen‘s coloring corner used them in a color along and it looked so quick and easy, so Ipurchased some. Love them! Yours turned out great.
I use those brushes for gel crayons and soft pastels too. I love them. (Thanks to Shelly) 🙂 I feel like I have more control placing the pigments, and the end result is very smooth. 💕
This was such a fun video thanks for sharing, your backgrounds turned out great. Do you spray all your finished pages with a fixative or only the ones with pastels on them?
@@apicturedpurpose What do you spray your pages with? What are they specifically called and what brands? I never considered that people do it with other mediums. Would be great to do that myself!
@@brittanyw8074I personally use and love the micador workable Matt fixative (it’s in Australia) it’s a protection spray for pencils, chalk, pastels etc…… works great.
All of them are beautiful but I think my favorite is the northern lights background. That one turned out just beautiful. I think they might be too messy for me but my son is a painter and I bet he would love these. He tried chalk pastels but didn't care for them. I might buy a small set for him and then I can play with them too but I'd have to try blending with something other than my fingers, I don't like my hands to get dirty 😂 This is the year I make an attempt at backgrounds so I'm very interested in your opinion on the various mediums. I think I'm going to go with watercolor pencils because I feel like they best fit my overall coloring style and aesthetic. I was going to get out today and spend my Christmas gift card but currently Houston is having a dang snowstorm so after months of research and finally making a decision, now I have to wait until the snow and ice melts 😂
I'd love to see how you work on doing the Northern lights and galaxy type backgrounds!! 🌌 I love both effects and would like to figure them out, too!! 💞 Those backgrounds look awesome!! 🥰 I really liked the effect of the mini ink blending brush!! 👍 I'm a bit concerned about how I would feel about using such a messy medium as I can get messy with pencils!! 😅 How were the fixatives for keeping the pastels in place, and were you able to pencil over them??
I haven’t colored the pages with pencils yet, but just by feeling the texture of the finished result, I think I’ll be able to color over the top with no issues. But I’ll keep you updated!
Such a great video. Especially for people who are on the fence about trying a new medium. And I love how you try to do multiple types of backgrounds for each of these videos. Thanks for sharing!! ☺️
Thank you Erica! I’m glad you’ve rediscovered enjoyed the video. PS I’ve really been enjoying your mythographic color alongs! ❤️✨

You’re too kind Nicole! Thank you so much ☺️💖
You did such a fantastic job trying out this medium!! Well done and thanks for sharing 😊
I really love the way the Northern Lights page turned out! Simply amazing! TFS have a blessed week ❤
Aww thank you so much for watching. I hope you have a great week too ☺️💕
Love all 3 backgrounds!!! You might just have swayed me into buying a set, I kinda love the messiness of them, and you made it look easy to use them 💜
Yay! Thank you! You should definitely go for it ❤️✨

Thankyou for this video, I have never been confident in using my oil pastels, your backgrounds where beautiful, especially the northern lights 😊 🌼🌷
You are so welcome! I totally understand being a bit hesitant. I was at first as well but once I ripped off the bandaid, I actually had a lot fun 🤩 💕
