Racing Stories and Secrets! Race Engine Building. A conversation with Ed Smith
Tranny fluid is 10w
A modern turbo 6 makes more power.
anyways 😂
Called bearings but they are bushings. Imagine the performance enhancement if we actually used roller bearings? Mains, crank/piston, cam on through...😮
these new cars are made out of recycled soda bottles bunch of throwaway cars
Has to be a V8. Light flywheel on a 4cyl is a bad idea.
👍
Don't forget the "French Flathead" that was made up into the 90s. It was an updated version of the 8BA (49-53) and they ironed out alot of issues with overheating and casting flaws. They put them in tons of military equipment but you can't run them in certain classes here in the USA because they were not cast in this country.
That’s cool. I need to look into that, also I might ask Ed what he knows about it.
This is true for a gm. But newer they've found that newer hemi motors benifit from replacing the oem with a hellcat pump. It's higher volume but isn’t crazy. It is enough to wet the upper better at an idle.
I have heard this, thanks for adding some detail here
Ed is the man!
Lake speed will tell you! Lake speed is the man he definitely knows some Speed secrets!😂
He sure does
Totally Right I understand that 💯 👌 🙂, called playing the game. 😅😂
That’s a great way to put it!
I’ve only been watching y’all for a couple months. I love to know what state you’re in if you’re in the south somewhere I would love to meet this national treasure of a man.!!!! nothing but respect should’ve been filming this guy!!!! He has forgotten more than Mr. Banks !!! 💯✌️👍🏻✊🛠🍀
Thanks so much - more to come. We are in Arizona 👍🌵

Mine went from 350 to 427
Yes sir!👍
Cyl. Sleeves are not steel. They are centrifugal cast iron. On the subject of defining terms, explain motor oil and motor mounts.
Thanks - I’ll ask Ed!
Agreed one time use stuff of your lucky, thumbs up,great video
Thanks 👍
That style of freeze plug is actually a welch plug
Thank you for adding that detail for us!
You probably don’t want to do it with a stock block! We’ve been doing 421s for years, but they are with a aftermarket block or a decent 400 block! 4.160 bore X 3.875 stroke! If you want to run a 4in stroke In a stock block, you are going to have issues with rods running into the camshaft! Anything can be done, but how much do you want to spend, for what result! If you want to run boost on it, it needs to be a aftermarket block, & should have a raised camshaft! Also keep bore to 4.125! Which would knock it down to 414cuin! You need the thicker bores for the cylinder pressure!
You are absolutely right, start with the right block and in a perfect world I think Ed would say get an aftermarket block…
God I love old Machinists
❤️
would Love to hear ED'S thoughts on 2-strokes. he's gotta know something we dont
Thanks for bringing up this topic, I will ask Ed in an upcoming episode!
Most of the people under 40 don't even know what dwell is lol
I have a feeling you’re right
@@BarryTsGarage some of us old crazy hot rodders that were not concerned with street "drivability" would lock the timing on full advance. We had to have a separate switch for the ignition to flip on after the engine was rotating, and if everything was right that thing would jump out from under you when you hit the gas!
Pistons match the crank....but he forgot about 400 c.i.d. rod are shorter than a 350 rod
Not bearing inserts, but the had poured babbits -
👍
Beautiful classic
Thanks for joining!
No free lunch! In nature, chemistry or physics.
Exactly 👍
I almost understand what he's talking about but I'm missing something.
Putting shims between the small end of the rod and the adjacent piston edges on the wrist pin keep everything in place for Less vibration… 👍
Great knowledge to soak up! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks
Lingenfelter had a way to make a 420 sbc, I crunched the numbers with the right block you could make a 427 sbc
True 👍😁
A 350 bored 60 over.... Steel crank 202 heads on alcohol.... Balanced and blueprinted Very powerful motor... An inexpensive
Well put. 👍
This old boy has seen it all. What a beauty. Dying breed
🙏
Put mothballs in the gas tank
You run windshield washer fluid into the intake with a sprayer nozzle
There are a lot of different types of washer fluid, what ingredient are you proposing?
@@BarryTsGarage it's a way to cheat folks have made a lot of money doing this they buy a junkyard motor and they run windshield washer fluid in the intake works for diesel or gas its water meth injection
Old School Basic Education , I love it !!! Keep it coming Ed !!!
More to come 👍
Love the BIG BEAUTIFUL BUICKS LIKE DRIVING A COUCH DOWN THE ROAD!!! FRIGGIN NICE..WHICH ARM DO YOU WANT...IM FRESH OUTA FIRST BORNS🤣🤣
Love it
A real v 8 nigah
🙏
It's called "Planned Obsolescence". These car manufacturers want the car you've purchased to break down within a certain amount of time so you'll purchase a new one.
Also cost weight savings that isn’t felt right away… 👍👍
In 1962 chevy usrd the same casting for the 283 and the 327
👍
@@chasnelson5753 was this the one with the oil filter reassessed up in the block.
JUNK! there was bakelite in the flatty and it didn't just fall apart...
👍🙏
Were the flatheads two pease valve guides ? Like 8n or 9n tractors ?
Yes indeed
I need 3h videos of this man explaining shit.
🙏🙏👍
They tune intakes now. One needs velocity to mix the charge. Like blowing through a straw vs an open mouth exhale. Is it a similar thing to using multiple valves. So it will run at the light?
I love working with old guys like this I'm working with an old guy at 75 years old and it does car restorations in his soul some of his cars at Barrett-Jackson and he just had a fire in the shop and I'm helping him clean it up now and hopefully I can talk him into keeping the shop for a little while longer if not I understand they got to sell everything
Wow yes - good on you for helping out!
Slant 6 was/is a great engine. It was bullet proof
It was
Ходят слухи, что дед растопил льды и вызвал глобальное потепление благодаря этой штуке
😂😂
I knew a guy like this that could tell you what flywheel would fit a certain crank and interchange. He also knew what starter you would need for that change. Short strokes and long strokes. Some that could turn 8500 RPM. It's crazy what they know about.
@BarryTsGarage Thank you to big Ed & all his wise wisdom I enjoy learning from ✌️😇🔧 I noticed that there is 1 or 2 heads laying around too ✌️😁🔧
Thank you! I’ll pass that along to Ed and we’ll do some more 👍
351c bellhouseing came as 302
Maybe the boss 302. The old 302 was a match to the 351w
I couldn’t agree more if Ed had a Mic he could’ve dropped it 😀🇨🇦
Hahaha 😂 yes. Exactly!!
