    I bought some tulle for my broccoli plants. Also want to cover my strawberry plants - but how will be bees get in to fertilize the flowers?? No bees - no berries from what I understand. Wouldn't that be true with tomato's too? I don't worry about all that with the broccoli and cauliflower etc. But don't you have to be concerned with berries & tomato flowers & bees for pollination? Just wondering what you think about the bee scenario?

    • @debbiesorganicgarden

      None of the plants you mention need pollinators. They pollinate themselves with wind movement. t doesn't have to be windy, just air movement.

    So… ummm… how do farmers grow big onions like what you would buy in the grocery store? I mow=ean I am fine with the smaller green onions up to a point. But when I cook dinner it almost always starts with chopping one whole medium to large yellow onion. It would be cool to grow them but there does not seem to be very much available know how.

    • @debbiesorganicgarden

      The large onions are a different variety. You can buy seeds that better fit what you want. Some suppliers will also sell plants that are already started so all you have to do is plant the starter plants.

  • @SandcastleDreams
    @SandcastleDreams 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I grew pole butterbeans one year down in Orland. They grew but got very few pods. That's when we lived in the swamp and we mulched. Then I realized that any time you mulch, the mulch robs your soil of nitrigen and so does watering when it gets really hot. Anywhere I mulch I add extra nitrogen. Now, I'm over on the Gulf side and instead of acidic I've got the opposite. Learning curves. I've also got clay. Green beans don't like it here but Vigna beans love it. Any yard long, cow pea, adzuki goes crazy. And my tall telephone peas loved my old garden. They hate it up here. I grew those puppies all through the summer heat and they kept pumping out peas. Up here, even with inoculent they just don't like it. So, I'm having to relearn gardening.

    • @debbiesorganicgarden
      @debbiesorganicgarden 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @SandcastleDreams I agree about the mulch except that it's when you till it in at the raw state, the decomposition will rob the soil of nitrogen. If you lay it only on top, it doesn't affect the soil except to keep it from drying out so fast. My experience with leaf mulch on top is that beans and peas perk up almost overnight with it. I understand about learning curves. Soils can be so different. I hope you don't give up. Get to know your soil and you will be awarded.

There are several sellers on Etsy. Get the red ones that are only thumbnail or less size. Once you get one bush, save the seeds from ripe tomatoes just in case they don't reseed themselves. I have never grown either variety of beans but I have had amazing all round success with banana peel and egg shell water liquid fertilizer. I make this constantly in old coffee jars by putting at least two banana skins and as many egg shells as will fit in the jar. Then I pour boiling water over the lot and let it stew in the sun for 3 weeks. At that point I tip the very smelly water into 3 litres of clean water and spray all over everything. I can hear the plants lapping it up as I do it. Within 2 days everything that hasn't flowered, starts flowering and they continue for a very long time. I do this regime, once a fortnight. Oh yes, do not clean the water empty jar out, simply add another peel and an egg sheel or two and top up with boiled water to stew again. Free and high in potassium and calcium.

    • @debbiesorganicgarden

    I dry my green tops and process them through the coffee grinder. This makes onion powder, useful in everything. I do the same with celery tops. No waste at all and gives immune health when sprinkled in savoury dishes. You must remember that 1 tspn of dried or dehydrated powder is worth 4 bunching onion stems or 2 celery stems, very potent stuff.

      Try a stiffer netting. I live in Central Florida and this kind lasts several seasons. Do squash bugs crawl under the netting?

      These come up volunteer in or near my compost. I think they need very fertile ground.

    I use tulle too, but how will the good pollinators get on the plant?

    • @debbiesorganicgarden
      @debbiesorganicgarden 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      tomatoes and strawberries do not need pollinators. The wind will shake the flowers enough to pollinate themselves. If you cover squash and cucumbers, you will either need to uncover them daily or hand pollinate.

    My only thought is that the Fordhook require just-right temps to develop strong roots. Maybe you got lucky that particular year?Snip your saved seeds & place in water 6-8.hrs. Then start in a dixie cup to transplant. Baby them in the beginning & see what happens. Best Wishes.

      Thank you! I think the weather had a lot to do with it. I plan on covering the latest ones with shade cloth. It doesn't hurt to try.

    I guess I’m the only one that listened to the intro of the kids singing. Or I’m hearing things 😜

      My siblings said they couldn't understand them, being unfamiliar with hymns. So, I have started adding the words in the intro. Thanks for noticing.

    Yes, finally a great solution. I mean this is revolutionary. Green onions really broke my bank account. I lost my house, car, and above all my sanity because of the price of green onions. Thank You savior queen 👸

    Thanks for the info. I had worms eat up my tomato plants a couple of years ago. I will try this and let you know how it works.
