Tesla Model Y Donor Vehicle Introduction
I am super impressed
i would like to convert a 60's cadillac coupe to ev using a rear tesla suspension&drive unit. tesla is attached with only 4 bolts, correct? would that need a complete new chassis or can an original chassis be used? i dont shy off a newly built one. batteries can be fitted in bonnet and trunk too? to achieve 120-150 kWh with battery=5-600kg equivalent to (engine, gearbox, ear axle+propshaft, tank etc). would that be viable project?
Hi, thank you for your great video! I still have a few questions I can’t find awnsers for on the internet. I would like to repair a salvage Tesla. However, I am from Québec and I discovered that our resalvaging laws appear far more strict than in Ontario (I could be wrong). It requires absurd structure verification welding and documentation, with only official Tesla repair instructions. It seems almost impossible to recertify it unless one is himself a certified Tesla repairman. I hope Ontario won’t fall in the same path. Thus I am trying to find a total loss, but still clean title Tesla for my ambition. My question is: how worried should I be that the car be declared "Unsupported" by Tesla (thus losing access to Superchargers)? Can an "unsupported" car be realistically "resupported" by Tesla if one keeps a title clean (or Rebuilt)? Could I buy, and maintain, autopilot if the Tesla is declared unsupported? Will normal 240volt charging also be cut if I get "unsupported" ? I am young and relatively poor, so fixing a Tesla might be my only way to acquire my dream car. Thank you very much. 100% subscribing to your channel!
Im not sure about the differences in Quebec to be honest. Obviously the best option would be a clean title car, but everyone want that one... In ontario we still need the structural safety done to tesla specs as well as normal mechanical safety. Unsupported is kind of misleading. You will loose the warranty for sure, but I still get all over the air updates. The model 3's can have a high voltage inspection done to regain supercharging, for a cost. My car had full self driving and it did stay with the car, even though it is rebuilt. I would assume you could purchase it after the fact aswell. The normal level 2 charging works perfect, it only affects supercharging. Hope that helps!
This is great!
Thanks!
I've changed my mind about EVs. I think they are a great choice for people who see their car as an appliance (like a toaster or microwave). Actually, a self-driving EV would be ideal.
Which is 95-99% of ALL people who own a vehicle. Spoken as a passionate enthusiast whose owned over 80+vehicle's in my 41 years. And I've run a very profitable tire and service shop here in ATL. They casually ignore the recommended service intervals, abhor paying for new tires, batteries, filters or alignments. Never check under the hood for fluid levels, check their tire pressures etc. Treating them exactly like an appliance hidden away in a dark room! 😀
@@4literv6 Perhaps you're like the physician or therapist who sees only sick or complaining patients, therefore assuming that everyone is similar. I try to surround myself with enthusiasts who enjoy not only the thrill of driving but also appreciate the design, engineering, and aesthetic of the automobile. I remain the eternal optimist.
EV’s are an excellent option providing they are used for their intended purpose. It is still not a solution for everyone. But using the components in the secondary hotrod market makes for some super interesting possibilities. The power is incredible! Exciting times ahead if you are open minded.
@@mchristr "I try to surround myself with enthusiasts who enjoy not only the thrill of driving but also appreciate the design, engineering, and aesthetic of the automobile." Do you think EV's don't also have all of those things?
@@JRP3 Aesthetics is the study of beauty, and we utilize all of our senses (not eyesight alone) to apprehend that beauty. Baseball, for example, is a beautiful game. We not only watch but take in the pop of a ball hitting a mitt, the crack of the bat, and the roar of the crowd. Imagine going to your favorite sporting event wearing noise-canceling headphones?
Can’t wait to see the results
WOW! Fascinating skills. Thanks for the inspiration. P.S.....Early Vettes = GORGEOUS! 😀
I agree! I personally think that is the best looking version.
There are tons of wrecked Model 3 and Y's out at reasonable prices now. If you could come up with a simple and affordable kit that allows you to shape batteries into different configurations and also change out suspension arms/driveshafts to shorten them to retro-fit older cars, you could make a fortune!
Those vehicles have 4 large modules with cells glued in place. The most you could do is remove those 4 modules from the Tesla pack but they are already in the most compact form possible. It doesn't look as if he's using Model 3/Y modules.
We have done all sorts of things with those batteries and @JRP3 is correct. They are just too awkward for most builds. We even explored custom 4680 packs…. Tesla drives however do still remain my favourite so far and I have a couple options in the works for axle and mount options.
Currently rebuilding a M3 in California . Is there any way I can email you , I have a few questions wondering if maybe you can help ?
Yeah of course. Dan@519kustomz.com
Just emailed you!
Excellent ! This is exactly why I am driving a VW ID 4 for rideshare(uber/lyft) instead of a Tesla. If After warranty I ever have a bad cell I dont need to replace the entire battery like with Tesla(because they are designed not to be serviceable as you stated) I cna buy a used Module for $500 /new for 800 and take it to someeone like 519Kustomz to install(used with similar cell voltages might be best )
Why do they need "reprogramming" Can you explain please ?
Firmware need to be flashed to match the third party controller

what Throttle cable did ya use? thanks
Hard to remember but I think I adapted the ford cable

Great vid! Was it hard to divorce the penthouse from the pack? Could you keep it all mostly together in a package to place elsewhere in the build?
I ended up making a mini penthouse as I wanted to keep the main contactors within the pack for safety reasons. I did have to make a new box to house the rest of the goodies elsewhere, but did re-organize their layout. It was alot of extra messing around!
Ferrari kitcar? I was assuming an AMX.
Currently rebuilding M3 in Ontario (not slavaged). I must say it is much easier to do this now then couple years ago with all the availbility of parts and information online.
Very true. Parts used to take forever! Hope everything goes smoothly for you.
Yes, and I remember when a turbocharged musclecar wasn't a real musclecar, but a 6-71 blower made you awesome. Bring on the new technology, and let's go for a ride!
Couldn’t agree more!
What type of engines are these? ASM, PSM or EESM?
These are PSM. Nice package
so you turmed a tesla into trash and wasted time and money. cool. can i have my time back pl :D
Get rid of the loud and annoying music! Or at least increase the volume of your narration! Impossible to watch!
As per your salvage Y with 4680 battery, are all software (including FSD) updates and subscriptions available to rebuilt Tesla from salvage title?
Why not use cheap mx5 hubs and wishbone suspension on the front?
Amazing video!!! would you be willing to share the photos of the tesla you bought from the auction because we are thinking of doing the same but I dont want to buy anything which has a structural because I dont have the tools to fix. Dents and changing parts here and there should be ok but no structural damage. Just wondering what do you look for when buying salvage teslas? how do you spot structural damage in Teslas?
Tough one but usually you can see the insurance adjusters estimate before you bid on a car in the insurance auctions. That is very helpfull, but it can still be a gamble. Point and direction of impact can be quite telling also.
@@519Kustomz what would you prefer what should we buy? In terms of how much damage is there. Also is it better to buy front end collision with no undercarriage damage as a first starter rebuild car?
When you say "no warranty" do you mean just no warranty on the car or do you also mean no warranty on the battery?
Warranty is void on everything. Unless you had to have a drive or battery replaced to get it back on the road.
@@519Kustomz Thanks for the info!
Could you use this base for a van ?
This one is purpose built, but yes, some iteration of this would work.
@@519Kustomz looking to use the tesla base for a Renault van in Europe. Should client accept the proposal. Probably need a model Y.
@@Manhoof cool project. Yeah lots to consider. Really depends on track width and wheel base. The Tesla stuff is a solid choice.
@@519Kustomz how long did it take you from receiving the parts to full drive readiness ?
I have built several off-road gas powered race cars through the years. And I would like to try Electric. Can I hire you to build a chassis like this for a Vintage Mustang body

I love kit cars…purist are idiots. Hot Rods have always been “outside of the box”
You're a wizard. Keep it up man!!
I appreciate that!
Rebuilding a model y tomorrow so this definitely helped! You noted that we don’t like long videos… actually long views do really well and get a shit ton of views. 1-2 long are great.
Hmm, maybe ill try that long format! Hope everything goes well with the model Y rebuild

How did you find out which encoder you needed? I bought a similar truck for 500 bucks from my family friend. It has some of the same symptoms except for when you put it in drive it automatically starts to drive away. It would be throttle pedal order a new one of those I haven’t tried it, but I just want to get a few extra parts in case I need to go that route.
I just ran the part number off the old encoder. It is normal for it to start moving as soon as it is in forward or reverse, but I think you can change that setting if you have the curtis programmer. It is like a creep mode. Information is slim but the electric 'kit' is from HPEVS if that helps
I woder what that weighs as is
Have you seen this video? th-cam.com/video/hHhf223jGIE/w-d-xo.html Assuming it's not totally fake (lots of claims online it is), I would love to figure out how he got this to work as the main thing holding me back from getting one is having to stop to charge on long drives. Any idea? Comments online indicate you'd at least need the generator (obvious) but then a separate BMS to manage the charging without triggering the safety that prevents you from driving while charging. Or just a way to bypass that safety feature.
bro just ruined a great american luxury/muscle car and made it electric
The heart and soul gone from a v dub😢
Or is it another classic Volkswagen saved from the crusher, rebuilt and stands proud as a beacon of possibilities for the next generation of enthusiast?
@519Kustomz there is some value in what you say but old cars hardly go to the crusher lol. Especially one in that condition. Finding a motor is sooooooo easy
Did you get the post processor figured out, or just write the code in a text file? I just got an Emco 365 with live tooling and sub spindle. Looking at the programming books that came along with the machine definitely different from fanuc programming! Glad to see you hobbing those splines! Keep it up.
I have a post working for the turning / boring, but for the live tool stuff I have to write the G code. Very confusing with the limited documentation at the start but I worked through it. Good luck with the emco, i really like the machine!
imagine you need to weld something deeper down because you see a crack.... you need to disassembly the entire car also you are welding back a none structural part of the entire mold, imagine if you would have something more important broken, would you dare to weld at places where the thickness of the diecast is not 5mm ? Welding cast aluminum with thickness of 20-30mm ?
Yeah much more that this and it wouldn't be worth fixing.
I love you work and vids
I love you work and vids
Math checks out
It's that that awesome Emco with the 810T ?
Yep! working pretty good so far
Gahh, I wish I owned these tools
It has been a lifetime of saving and collecting tools!
How much was the build?
I literally love old cnc machines, I have a 1989 Mikron vf21d tnc 355 at home that I run through a fusion 360, which is interesting because it works perfectly on an unedited 155 post processor one day I will definitely take an old cnc lathe, I just don't know which model, but it must also have a C axis
C-Axis and live tool makes it much more useful for sure. and complex....
I enjoyed learning how you made the T clamps and showed how useful they are. Out of curiosity, what was the end product to be used for?
Thanks! End part is just some exterior trim for car project
calculation spot on haha
Appreciate the content!!!
The more stuff people can share the better l reckon. Looks like you're going to do something l have been wondering about. Custom battery packs. lt will be really interesting to see how things like performance and range are affected by the reconfiguration. l'm also interested to see how you handle battery box sealing , venting and waterproofing given this is going to be a floor mounted version l'm assuming . Cheers.
