- Freshly completed rolling chassis overview. Chassis uses a rear Tesla model 3 drive and a shortened standard range 50kw model 3 battery pack. Custom design and fabricated double a-arm front suspension using Tesla model 3 brakes and hub assemblies.

This is the best EV swap as a base kit. It's the lightest, cheapest, off the shelf and highest quality you can start with for any kit car swaps. I can see this being the future for 3d printed cars. Just stick on body panels and reuse the tesla interior.

Dang I'm looking to do this same setup on my Tesla Ranger project.
Will need custom frame but will try using front and rear subframe with a custom shock/spring mount.
I'm going to try and keep the Tesla system stock so I can keep stability, Abs and traction control.

Wicked, I would love to check out how its going. If you have any questions don't hesitate, i've done a couple now. I have always abandoned the tesla ecosystem as aftermarket stuff has traction control available usually. Simplify the whole build.

You are right regarding history repeating itself. This is the future, but 2023 and 2024 will be less consumption maybe these products are not so effected. But shopping in general will for sure take a hit.

Looks like another cool project.
That rear beams where the whole cradle/EDU is mounted will transfer a lot of bending moment on the rear Y axis chassis frame. That is if the unibody does not structurally tie the rear end to the rest over the B / C pillars.
I would strongly suggest to you to try and get some official high voltage training. Please always use HV PPE and keep all live terminals of the battery always properly insulated. Not trying to be safety nazi but coming from that industry, shit can go bad quickly.
Thanks man. Yeah the unibody is going to tie the whole thing together. I’m always hesitant about showing projects part way through because not everything is explained right away. I have actually put some serious thought into offering high voltage training / awareness, so safety nazi is alright with me!
Looking to build something similar for my 1936 Chevy / Sumlin (part of my last name lol) retro style street rod . With a hand built fiberglass body . With a few twist.

It will take a bit still but pricing will come down eventually. However, it is actually quite comparable to a high horsepower motor and transmission, all things considered.
Great video, I was wondering the wheel base minimum in inches of your chassis and the frame width between the axles? This looks applicable to early smaller muscle car bodies, and pickups? What is the kit car you built the chassis for, a Cobra by chance?
Wheel base was 98 inches. The width I would have to look up again, but that can be a issue in smaller muscle cars that had narrow-ish frames stock. This was for a fiberglass Ferrari replica
I would love to see a 4x4 4 wheel steer with electric power steering front and back. But an aluminum tube chassis/ roll cage. And fibre glass shell.
It looks like the rear chassis rails should be connected at the back. Is there any support back there?
Yeah this is getting a unibody car grafted to the chassis, so lots of support everywhere. We did consider an aluminum chassis for this one but cost killed it.
That front suspension is brilluant. Would love to see an episode of how you build your frames. Are they flat plates that you corner weld into boxes? How do you jig that up?

Thanks! Yeah, they are CAD designed laser cut flat plates, formed and welded corner to corner. I have much more on my Instagram page that shows fabrication stuff.

There would be a market for something like that! Van is pretty heavy though.

Cooling is factory but slightly re-plumbed. The BMS is kind of hacked factory. I use the battery controller from Ingenext.
Great vid! Was it hard to divorce the penthouse from the pack? Could you keep it all mostly together in a package to place elsewhere in the build?
I ended up making a mini penthouse as I wanted to keep the main contactors within the pack for safety reasons. I did have to make a new box to house the rest of the goodies elsewhere, but did re-organize their layout. It was alot of extra messing around!

What gauge steel do you use for the chassis? I’ve already got a Tesla model 3 dual motor donor car for a 1957 Chevy Belair 4 door sport sedan which I also already have for the swap. What you have done is really the best solution for this sort of conversion. I’m planning on using as much of the Tesla as possible including power steering, Regenerative brakes, motors, penthouse wiring harness and battery pack mounted exactly as you have done it.
Have you or will you cut out as much weight from the body as you can? Building a chassis is one thing but getting the overall weight down with the classic body is probably the biggest challenge. The other option is to just not worry about the weight, beef up the brakes a bit and drive a bit more mindful of a really heavy car. Been building a new geothermal power station so am now just short of time until the project ends. Should get started on the belair ev conversion project in 2024. Andrew.

When referencing the battery I think you mean to say it's a 50kWh unit not 50kW.

Fantastic execution. I am currently looking for a salvage tesla plaid to start a similar build for my 69 mustang. I bet in 3-5 years people will look back at this as a turning point for alot of gearheads. I would love to see more content on your chassis build proccess. Its awsome.
What is your total width edge to edge on the frame?
Mustang would be awesome! Plaid is a pretty wide track width to deal with. I'm with you, it is a bit early still but people will catch on. I just started the TH-cam thing after I had these mostly built, so most of the build stuff is just photos. But the next one I'm just starting the CAD work for and I will video much more indepth and share.

@@haaseuros9789 this controller is made by ingenext. I don’t think they support the plaid drive. Try EV Controls in Ottawa, they might.
@519Kustomz I sent them an email. My engine is kinda old now so I think I want to go ev next. Honestly might be cheaper to go even plaid drive unit then another built turbo engine and trans next.
Would you ever consider doing a chassis for someone wanting to do something similar? I have a 72 2 door Impala... Im not sure if that would work but I would think it would be similar in size to your Galaxie.
Yeah of course I would. The impala should be close to the galaxie just not sure how the frame was originally configured. Makes a big difference on how the battery fits.

When you get a complete the car do you have a problem getting it registered ?
That is a tricky question as the laws are different everywhere. Generally though, it is best to start with the car certified and licensed and registered, then it is just modified. In Canada for example, it is ultimately the certifying mechanics discrestion.

i would like to convert a 60's cadillac coupe to ev using a rear tesla suspension&drive unit. tesla is attached with only 4 bolts, correct? would that need a complete new chassis or can an original chassis be used? i dont shy off a newly built one. batteries can be fitted in bonnet and trunk too? to achieve 120-150 kWh with battery=5-600kg equivalent to (engine,gearbox,ear axle+propshaft, tank etc). would that be viable project?
could this be possible with a 98 3000gt? except with 2 models plaid rear drive units, one for front wheels and one for rear wheels.
Anything is possible. I would however run a single plaid rear drive and a front motor, instead of two rear motors. They way tesla runs them is the rear motor is the master and the front motor is basically a slave. Trying to run two rear motors, perfectly in sync would likely not be worth the headache.

Good question. I'm not familiar with the exact dimensions of the I8, but I bet it is close?, Seat height would likely be an issue.

of course! I would use a different battery option though.

Yes you could absolutely use a modified version of this. More like the Galaxie I did, with AWD and long range battery though.

Sir, With this setup how much mileage one can expect, while giving optimum output.
This is just over 50kwh so it should give around 250 kilometres range given its weight.

This chassis is around 25K but everyone is a little different so pricing varies. That does not include the tesla donor components.
Could you use this base for a van ?
This one is purpose built, but yes, some iteration of this would work.

Nice work, What did you do to shorten the coolant lines inside the battery pack, What type of connection did you use ?
I used as much of the plastic coolant lines as i could and found gates shrink fit coolant "clamps" exactly like the factory white ones.
I live in Florida. I have a very nice condition 56 Chevy Belair and I have a 67 Ford galaxy 500. Would you be able to convert either one of those to an electric vehicle for me? If not, do you know anyone that would be willing to do that project?
I am sure I could convert both of those! I'm not to familiar with the shops in and around Florida but there is bound to be someone closer to you. If not, happy to help!
Advice for future videos... Not knowing the difference between a kW and a kWh is like not knowing the difference between horsepower and how much gas the fuel tank holds. Pretty basic stuff.
