Thank you for this video!
If I grew up and was raised in the wilderness and very knowledgeable of outdoor life, bushcraft, wildlife, ecology, hunting, fishing, carpentry, gardening, fire-building, navigation, first-aid, private-pilot license, nautical skills, Spanish, knowledge in geology, conservation, and forestry......would I still be automatically passed over by someone that has a bachelors degree that took all the correct courses? For something like a 'protection ranger', 'backcountry', 'resource management' ? Or do you think they would take my experience into account?
It's encouraging to see so many career paths available in conservation. I might check out Resubot for help with my application materials.
For those applying to these positions, I've heard that an ATS-friendly resume can make a big difference. ResuBot has some useful tools for that.
I found the part about wildland firefighting really interesting. I've been thinking about a career change and this could be a good fit.
Great to see that there are pathways into environmental jobs without needing a degree. Definitely sharing this with my friends.
This is such valuable information for anyone looking to start a career in environmental work. I wish I had known about these options earlier.
Trump shuts down funding Jan 2025 to Drill Baby Drill
I'm considering dropping out of my field ecology degree for a variety of reasons, but I don't want to get stuck in front of a desk or a cash register. I want to be outdoors getting my hands and shoes covered in mud and learning stuff. I think this video will be a fucking life saver. THANK YOU.
I worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and now the National Park Service as a botanist. Covid issues with the parents forced me to leave the FWS and I wish I could go back. The FWS is super chill and puts wildlife and habitat first although botanist positions are rare and they are not funded as well. The NPS is far too bureaucratic, and visitors are priority over the environment, but they at least try. I would never work for the Bureau of Land Management (aka The Bureau of Livestock and Mining). Their priority is sucking up to ranchers and mineral extraction companies. The result is millions of acres of trashed out public lands and you will spend your entire time there cleaning up their messes or locked in litigation from natural resource non-profits.
I am from Pakistan and I also graduated recently in botany. Your videos was very helpful .
Hi :) what kind of bachelors do you need to be a specialist/conservationist?
So I generally post a few postings in the video description (it’s been a while since I really looked at it). It’ll show you exactly what they accept. Generally being a more of generalist biology or ecology or something like that is good enough with different degrees being available for people that want to really hone in on one. A lot of land grant type schools have directly developed some degree tracks specifically named and structured to meet the criteria of jobs.
bruh what if you live in the uk lolll
Broooo sounds like you might want to look into uksda jobs lol. Idk man, foreign stuff if you’re asking is possible but weird in a way I haven’t fully understood. A good alternative is pretty much any job has a state agency and private agency working with it. Find who you want from that and getting in is much more straightforward.
Is every ranger an police officer?
So, kinda confusing but, in some agencies yes 100% and in others not necessarily. In the national park service almost every job is a ranger from science to law to whatever else. In the world of some state agencies it’s 100% law. Ranger as a naming convention can help people fill non desirable postings literally just because it’s a Ranger and we have an association due to the deep historical roots of the title. This video was kinda to highlight how diverse it really is.
For other country
That is trash pay
Broooo even more true now years after I made this
So helpful, thank you! 🙂
Bro I'll pay the 35k I'm just not college material
Yeah, this is like a, foot in the door material. TBH I’m years off this channel and since finding work I like which is kinda outside of this video even it’s better taking continued education and all of that. I also struggled doing college and school for school. This videos hope might be out of date with current economic struggle more than when it came out but like I generally feel better finding work I like and investing into that instead of just nebulous school. To each their own though dawg. Good luck and I love you!
I work on natural resource management. Because it's not a conventional sector so the future is bit gloomy here. Can you suggest some alternative
Awesome video man, even after three years this video still gives me the information i need. I am starting work for the Conservation corps and i really hope that itll open up opportunities for me to work in the fire service. this makes me very excited for the future as coming straight out of highschool im looking for a career that requires minimal/no schooling.
I need job please contact me
Not really how that works, sounds like you might want to contact some jobs haha.
I'm a HighSchool student, But i know i want to work with plants. Are there any colleges with botany or botany-adjacent majors I should look into?
I want to talk with you. I have degree. I want to work in usa. I dont have your Mail id, so that,i cant contact with you. 😢
Hey! Firstly, i just wanted to say thanks for your video. i'm a recent graduate with an environmental studies degree from the university of washington. so far, i have about 9 months worth of experience doing environmental fieldwork, more specifically urban forestry restoration work as an intern. and soon enough, this upcoming january, i have an earthcorp crew member position i will be filling in, its an americorp program im pretty sure. do you have any general advice for me going forward if im interested in eventually landing a stable career in any form of environmental work? im not limited to fieldwork, but also policy, consulting, research, etc.
Why don't you just act like one
Or 7!
@ecologystorymode oh I thought you were talking about money laundering
Thank you this helped with my school alot
Well i have done forestry degree in Bangladesh. I want to do Work with forest Department in the usa. Whats the process
Nooo there’s no captions:( I’m hard of hearing, I wish there were captions on videos!
video is a little blury
What do you recommend for someone who has an AA in psychology and anthropology and a BA in psychology?
Is there any way to get trained as a wildland firefighter before I graduate highschool then get on a crew right after I graduate in June
go ahead and take 6 months worth of of fire classes, get s 130 and s 190, then s 212 , but 212 doesnt really matter, try to get any job using your hands, for at least 6 months to stand out.
I’m graduating this year with my red card and EMT all to this program my district offers called Warren Tech. It was super helpful to get me a head-start.
I changed Nursing to Environmental and Botany ❤
What are some tips into getting into conservation management (asking as a sophomore in high school)
Hey there! I really love your videos! Hope you can respond! I live in California!
❤ Let me know what you think about this content❤ I love your videos! They are very helpful. Thank you!
❤Thank you for creating this video I've noticed in my line of work that there are many people who take the traditional route via school but there are other options clearly.❤E
which one makes the most $ ?
Damn shame I can't even find a job similar in my province... This shit sucks not being able to find a job that I want literally anywhere near me. I'd have to move across Canada again just for the chance
Can you work any of these jobs, if you have a dog that you need to take care of at home? I cant leave my dog with my dad at home and i have to be the one to take care of him, but it would be interesting to work one of these jobs. Maybe as a guide if its local? Can you bring your dog to wherever you live in any of the other jobs? Is there somewhere you all sleep together with your coworkers? You didnt explain what the living situation for any of these jobs is like
i still get denied. ugh
I was just watching an older video thinking “that guy would look nice with a mustache”. Here you are
So glad you posted these. Good videos and i appreciate the sharing of knowledge
So helpful. Graduating this spring with my BS in biology with ecology emphasis and I’ve been scared shitless about trying to find a job.
Landing even an entry level role in federal is like impossible. Always getting declined even when I will be taking a major pay cut to do something I would enjoy.
I'm starting my bachelor's program next week! I'm super nervous, but your videos give me great insight into the job market. Thank you, and please, keep doing what you're doing!
Sir! As a fresh graduate of environmental science, like we dont have internship, can I join internship in your country ? To grow and enhancd my technical skill for no xperience?
Good luck. I have an MS in natural resource management 15 years experience in parks and public lands, and if your not a veteran, and even if you are, all these jobs are temp jobs. You cant survive with any quality of life.
Yeah, this isn’t an invalid point. When I made this I was working in some more remote areas and while you can absolutely find full time spots on a lot of these, it’s really field office dependent and luck dependent for postings. I now work in a more competitive environment and would probably reframe this years later.
Navy Veteran denied entrance to Morro Bay Campground using free day use pass from Library , th-cam.com/video/mxY676m76_w/w-d-xo.html
This Navy Veteran , me , was denied entry to the Morro Bay Campground with my free day use pass from the Calif library system. I was also issued on another day a ticket for non payment of camping fees $233, when I was not camping Ranger B.E. Wrote that ticket after watching me just 15 mins earlier drive into the park. Another Calif Park Ranger that works in that area Ranger K also likes writing mass tickets to everyone even those that work in the park. Her boss told her and B. E to stop but they won't. An 80 year old Campground host of 15 years was told to not come back to his job as host in October as they Rangers try to blame me & him for all sorts of made up stuff... video on th-cam.com/video/mxY676m76_w/w-d-xo.html Reply
