Hey guys, lab jobs are the other major part of my work experience which I haven't talked about too much yet but I think is a great way to not only bring more types of people into science but offers a greater amount of diversity in applications for job seekers. I loved my time in labs just like I love my time outdoors working. Comment if you like this or if you want to see more of these kinds of videos!

I really appreciate this video as well as one you did a while back on being a broke student! I graduated with a Botany degree not too long ago but have been struggling to find a career within botany/STEM I enjoy. The path I wanted to take (field botantist) didn't work out and I feel stuck working a non-STEM job and not putting my degree to use. It seems like I should give a lab tech job a shot, it is just unfortunate they don't pay all that well compared to other careers. Does it take very long to work up to a lab specialist? Not sure I want to go back and get into more debt for a Masters...

Hey, sorry for the late response here. Generally, it's going to be based on what education and type of lab you work at is going to be. At most labs that I've worked at for instance, if you want to become a tech you just need to show you're a decent person and have a general aptitude for the skills they need with no specific experience necessary. I've worked with no degree people in ag labs as well as been a student and worked in other labs where if you show you're generally competent at technical skills and can tech you whatever procedure you need to do from there. A pro tip for applying is to a lab is that usually they have technical tools and especially older staff with newer tech in places I've worked love having people that can work on computers or do simple troubleshooting. You don't need to stress about their specific tools but just showing you are able to troubleshoot and maintain equipment goes a LOOOONGGGGGG way. haha
