Lincoln LS: European manners
Your support is much appreciated!: boosty.to/redlinecarshow/donate
If nowadays you were to say that Lincoln, a company whose lineup consists only of crossovers (and one sedan for the Chinese market), suddenly made a Europeanized, rear-wheel-drive sports sedan - a competitor to BMW, Mercedes, and premium Japanese cars - no one would likely believe you. However, that's exactly what they did over 20 years ago. By the early '90s, Lincoln, whose lineup consisted mainly of large sedans and coupes, wasn't particularly interested in competing with its European and Japanese rivals. Compared to Cadillac, which took notice of Europeans back in the '70s and tried to catch up by releasing cars like the Seville, Cimarron, and later the Catera, models that, to put it mildly, did not enjoy the best reputation.
The only thing Lincoln rolled out against the Europeans was a rebadged Granada, sold as the Lincoln Versailles, which even then mainly competed with the Seville. But by the mid-'90s, watching the Europeans win almost every comparison test, along with slowly but surely winning out Lincoln’s buyers, Ford decided to make their move and roll out a response to the foreign sports sedans!

When the Saab 99 came out in 1968, it originally came with 1.7 and 1.8-liter inline-four engines, known as the "Slant-Four," produced by the British company Triumph. However, by 1971, Triumph had developed a 3.0-liter V8 engine, which was also considered for the Saab 99. Despite building 28 prototypes with this engine, the project didn’t move forward, and instead, Saab decided to produce their ...

The car of this episode came out pretty much in the shadow of its older brother, the GTO. By that time, Japan's economic bubble had already burst, leading to a decade-long stagnation. Saab had established a good reputation for itself by the second half of the 1970s, not only due to their unique high-quality cars that were in demand in both Europe and the US, but also thanks to their participation in motorsports, earning victories in many notable events, mostly thanks to Eric "Mr.Saab" Carlsson and Stig Blomqvist. The company remained profitable, but it still lagged behind it...

the crappy gm ignition switches killed saab, to many new cars on flatbeds will do that to a brand.
I got a Impreza and Legacy. I found a white svx at the dealership. Had to buy her. SVX is a porsche.
GS430 made 300hp not 284
I love mine. I have a final model year second gen V8. 2005 GS430, black on black, with wood grain steering wheel, heated seats, navigation, mark levinson audio, xenon auto leveling headlights, 6 disk CD changer. 1 of 422 V8 GSs produced in 2005. It’s such a gem of a car and it feels very special to drive. My buddy also has a 1996 GS300 rare first gen. Car drives immaculately perfect. The ES is a great car as well though, I have a 2005 ES330 with 352,000 miles. Wonderful car as well. Even more options than the GS.
My dream car! Came across one parked on the street a couple of days ago, in my country it's not common at all and i mean at all, so i really didn't believe my eyes lmao.
beautiful looking car, but the motor and exhaust didn’t match the image.
3000 GTO VR4 deserved such a better history. It literally had EVERYTHING and was leaps and bounds ahead of it's time :(
Believe it or not Lumina APVs were imported into China with large quantity due to trade agreements between China and US in 90s, I had a chance to rode on them an vomited violently due to motion sickness and the super soft suspension, we call them “子弹头” or "Bullet Head" judge by it's super sleek look.
This platform end V8 engine, as well as the boring interior, were also used in the gorgeous 2002-2005 Ford Thunderbird
The second gen Lexus GS 300 was my favorite. Back in 2014, I bought a silver 2005 one from a independent car dealership with the 2JZ GTE engine. It had 232,000 miles and it still drove smooth like a new car. Only problem was a busted radiator and that was all. Now I drive a 2006 Acura TL and it got 205,000 miles that I bought used 3 years ago started at 141,000 miles in 2021 and it to drive smooth. Toyota/Lexus and Honda/ Acura are the best new and used car to buy. Like Nissan (before CVTs)/ Infiniti were good cars too.
Bro the car was called gto everywhere except the US. Mitsubishi couldn't use GTO in the US because of pontiac, but they didn't care what people thought. It was purely legal
Honestly, my conquest is easily one of my favorite cars. It doesn't feel outdated even in 2024. Some of the creature comforts I prefer more than modern cars.
Man I loved this car. There is a cult of enthusiasts who still hopes for the return of the LS. If you ever been in a Gen II LS it rides like a dream and even today still looks good. I had a 03 v8 Sport and then a 04 and then a 06 Ultimate with every available option. The trans is its weak spot as it needed rebuilding but other than the cooling system needing a complete overhaul (which is why many think blown headgaskets) no other issues. Mines was in the Dark Cherry Metallic with the taupe interior, THX Navi and sound system, moonroof and heated and cooled seats.
US Ford after 2006 could save Ford Australia build Australian Ford Falcon with RWD convert LHD for American market. Choice was 4.0lt straight six with turbo option, their G6E falcon was nice luxury with turbo or 5.4lt V8 with 4 valve per head or late Mustang 5.0lt V8. Ford had their own performance brand Tickford then it change to FPV, just like Holden n HSV both pumping out high performance plus luxury sedans, also utes versions.
Thanks for talking about this car. This car should have been heavily on Lincoln’s radar for keeping the brand appealing especially sedans.
thank you for showing pieces of the "Amazing Journey" advert, an award-winning video with continuous pullback that re-integrated scenes of the LS and its passengers as the scenery changes. That ad also featured a remix of composer Don Davis' "Furious Angels" which would later be featured in the "Woman in Red" sequence from "The Matrix." I was a big Ford fan at the time, driving a high-spec Mercury Mystique LS (no pun intended) and hoped to drive an LS6 one day. Alas.
I liked these enough to research them as a used car once. Suffice it to say there is a reason you don't see these on the road anymore. This car had Jaguar-Land Rover reliability. As in disposable euro trash. Too bad, beautiful car.
What do you mean? Not sure where you live but there are plenty of LSes here in Chicago. I see them literally every day.
God i love this car
I like this car shame it wasnt sold in europe i would love one with a diesel lol
This car and the Mitsubishi Starion Turbo had been the cars that I would like to own as collection.
Back in my day I thought these minivans from GM were the coolest thing!
I really wish Lincoln had pursued this path further. They had the Towncar which used the 4.6 from the Mustang, which made less power (til 2005 in the Mustang), and weighed more but was far more reliable. But an almost 50/50 weight distribution in the LS with double independent wishbone suspension up front with a multilink in the rear was a revelation at the time of domestic live rear axles and modified macphersons with crap weight distribution. Some say the engine was underpowered compared to the European equivalent, and they were right. But I never thought it felt slow. At least in my buddies v8 version. It had more than enough to light up the tires from a dig or around a corner. And it handled like a dream. These were always very underrated imo.
The "experts" in the comments LOVE to bitch about and trash this model.
I always loved the LS.
Great doc. I read where the new Explorer chassis was originally going to be a spiritual successor until they decided to go all SUV PUP. Now the rumor is the Mustang will spawn a sports sedan. My question is, what took so long?!
Thought it was really cool of these to be offered with a 5 speed manual. Lincoln hadn't offered a manual option since the 50s.
Indeed! Though It's a shame that they didn't offer a manual for the V8, so is that the LSE's by McLaren didn't go into production 😢
The V8 was underpowered even by the standards of the day; and it was still unreliable. Head gaskets anyone?
It was a Jaguar engine after all🙃
Precisely why in my opinion they never should have built the AJ V8 in the first place but used the DOHC version of the modular engine. That would have been a great way to boost not only economies of scale but also giving Jaguar a more competitive engine. Imagine If the LS had the modular engine family all the possibilities. The standard 4.6 DOHC would be more powerful than the Jaguar 3.9 for starters producing close to 300 horsepower during that time frame. It could have had a variant of the 5.4l V8 found in the Cobra R or the supercharged 4.6 used in the 03-04 Cobra, or the supercharged 5.4 used in the Ford GT. The other part is they needed to invest more money in the interior. The exterior was beautiful though.
They almost never had head headgaskets. It was the cooling system losing pressure because of stress cracks in the hoses that most of the time were misdiagnosed. I've had a total of 4. I know these cars like the back of my hand. And the 3.9 in 2003 was not underpowered it had almost 300hp and hit 0to60 in 6.7 secs. By comparison the CTS had a 3.2 and the Lexus GS had a 3.5, Infiniti also had the 3.7 with all similar horsepower ratings.
The 4.2 AJ V8 was fantastically reliable. The LS could’ve used that❤
@@MugatuJag It was redundant though having two v8s with roughly the same technology being produced around the same time. If the AJV8 had featured technology that was beyond the four valve head modular V8, I could see the logic behind it; however, being that the to used such similar technology at the core it makes me think that having its own engine worked against the ability for the company to be profitable under Ford's tutelage. In my opinion, they would have been better off to just use the four valve head modular engine with jaguars own tuning and adding more advanced technology like they did with the Duratec V6. This would enable them either to save cost to hopefully turn a profit or use their funding instead on something Ford didn't have that their competitors did have (namely a new V12 engine). Imagine if Jaguar had a version of the Aston Martin V12 for their vehicles.
Isuzu Vehicross was such a cool car and way ahead of its time. The late 90s and early 00s truly were the future! Too bad 9/11 took the wind out of everybody's sails. Also, bonus because it was featured in Mission to Mars.
Love Oldsmobile, and honestly love the bubble cars of the 90s and 00s.
When new 370 hp Not 365 The 4.0 L V8 supercharged with the Eaton M112 370 hp 387 ft-Ibs of torque 0-60 mph in about 5.2 seconds This video is good but it has the figures wrong!
I have a ninety nine jaguar vanden plas i love this body style i definitely subscribed to your channel
Cool vid, such a shame the brand is no more.
Very interesting. But... I have a feeling that some things were not meant to be. Moving to four-stroke motors with the Ford V4 and later the Triumph slant four makes sense... But a SAAB with a V8 lump seems somehow beyond illogical. It is fair enough to try to chase the US market, but doing it with a V8 seems odd. I'm glad this didn't happen. I love Saabs. My wife still drives one.
Why would offering a V8 option to the American market have been odd? Americans love V8s. Which is one of the reasons BMW and Mercedes used to have V8 engine options.
@@Kivikesku Indeed. It suits a significant part of the US market (or it did at one time). But for many, the entire ethos of Saab is somehow contrary to the "cubes and pistons" mentality. Citroën was (in a way) similar - they flirted with 22cv V8 version of the Traction Avant. But essentially, they stayed away from the V8. It is like putting humps on the back of a race horse to make a camel... There's no need. There are already camels, which are very popular on desert areas. But crossing deserts is not what race horse do.
I always liked the VehiCross for all its quirkiness. The world needs more odd vehicles like this. The closest thing the U.S. had since then is maybe the Nissan Juke. There were a couple of these at my local junkyard a few years back, and I regret not taking the funky two-toned leather seats out and making cool garage chairs out of them.
I hope the yt algorithm picks up your channel soon. Your channel is excellent
Thanks a lot! It did pick up my previous two videos (sort of), but then I had to skip and upload a video a week later because of a cold I caught earlier, oh well! 🙃
The XJS successor was not cancelled, it was turned into the Aston Martin DB7, a brand also owned by Ford at the time.
SAAB Turbo was a fun car to drive.
had a 94 pontiac transport, one of the best cars I've ever own, drove it 10hrs a week for 5 yrs. Then gave it to son inlaw who beat it up roofing for a couple more years. Almost 400k when it was done. Never had any major problems with it the whole time! Just a great van!
Saab 8:32
I've heard so much Finland in this video that I'm starting to question whether SAAB was Swedish or really Finnish
My parents went through several minivans when I was growing up, but the Silhouette and the Ford Aerostar were hands down the worst. They bought a Honda Odyssey in 2002 and my dad still drives it.
I would love to have a Chevrolet Astro AWD with the high output 4.3 V6 that was in god condition. You can haul and tow a lot and still have the interior space to carry your family.
I LOVE my 1990 LS400. Never going to sale this thing. I always wanted one when I saw them come out and I was 6 years old. Didn’t know what it was but I knew I wanted one. It looked cool as hell. Only 2 other cars that looked just as good were the Acura Legend and Q45 of the time.
The Ford Aereostar vans were much more reliable compared too the latter Windstar vans
really glad they didn't; you can get same power from original engine today with better tech. Also, please send me one of those extras so I can shove it in my 900 immediately!
I believe Oldsmobile, Pontiac could have been save by looking over GM fence into Australia. In 1989 new plaform the Holden VN Commodore RWD with 3800 V6, Holden EFi 5.0lt V.8 later Holden 3800 V6 supercharged n Holden 5.7lt V8. HSV made performance car which improve on Holden range which Oldsmobile could had long wheel base Statesmen n Caprice n Pontiac short wheelbase. Add ute, wagon n other platforms like second generation VT which increase sales like it did in Australia until 2008. What miss opportunity.
How do I steal that museum 9000?
I had a Lemona I mean Lumina. What a piece of junk. It always stalled while driving down the road. There was a fix -- snip the overdrive wire. That means your'e rocking a 3-speed auto transmission and getting 12-14 mpg.
Ive seen it a couple of times, my car is in the same museum as the 2 v8’s
If you want me to take some videos of the car or engine let me know!
