First Ride on We Are One Convergence Fuse Carbon Rims - Piedmont Hero Dirt - Duluth, MN
I've been interested in carbon fiber wheels for years now, and recently bought a pair of We Are One Convergence Fuse rims on sale after damaging yet another alloy rear wheel. I was interested in the new Convergence rims from We Are One Composites ever since I saw their unique design and ride characteristics of muting/dampening trail chatter and feedback. I had the Fuse rims built up how We Are One recommends, with Sapim Race Spokes and Polyax Alloy Spoke Nipples laced to Industry Nine Hydra Hubs. After my first ride with them I was extremely impressed by them, and after a couple more rides on the Fuse rims they are the best feeling wheels I've ever ridden. Set them up exactly the same as my old RaceFace AR30 rims, with the same tires, tire pressure, and cush core inserts. This way any changes in ride feel would be directly from the new Fuse rims, and there was a definite improvement in ride feel. Tubeless installation for me was a breeze, even with reinforced Maxxis Doubledown tires and full sized Cush Core Pro tire inserts. I would be interested in testing these wheels in the future without Cush Core on the front wheel, or keeping Cush Core installed and using lighter, more supple EXO+ tires. These wheels definitely feel stout and I'm very happy with my new We Are One Convergence Fuse wheels.
Trails I rode were the classic NIMBY cluster downhill trails over in Piedmont and most of the trails over in Brewer Park, including the much improved Homebrew trail where Rudy has been building a ton of new features. Thanks to @Randy_Johnson for riding and filming the new Homebrew with me.
Thanks for watching everyone, I've had a great year on the bike! There's lots of footage from this fall that I simply didn't have time to edit so consider subscribing and keep an eye out for new videos next Spring!

I did this in the wet, need to re edit my video and color correct it. Growing up in the late 80's riding the rocks of Northern New Jersey/Southern New York was just like these trails!
@@RoblovesMTBs That’s crazy to ride Fade to Blue in the wet, would be even more of a challenge trying to find traction in those rock sections! Good to know that the east coast has some challenging tech too similar to some of the most challenging in the Midwest!
It’s quadruple black diamond if you go back up the trail.
Spirit mountain looks so cool, almost like a mini whistler. Gotta check it out next year!
@@pyromonic694 I hope you get out to Spirit, easily one of the best bike parks in the Midwest and they’re always building and expanding. I’ve heard riders from the PNW describe the terrain as a mini Squamish with the challenging rock slabs. Don’t have the raw elevation but some of the double black diamonds here can get rowdy!
Quit drawing on the wooden drop Andrew! 😂. Dude your bike is sounding great, just rock hits and zippy hubs, love it! Great riding on great trails on what looked like primo conditions, with new carbon hoops to boot!
@@robonbikes Haha I promise it wasn’t me, can’t fit a spray can in the hip pack or weigh myself down with an unnecessary 150 grams 🤣 Thanks Rob, keeping the bike running smooth and quiet has been some work, creaks just seem to appear after riding Spirit. First time riding carbon wheels was awesome, they felt great on that sweet Piedmont hero dirt!
I loved my last set of carbon rims! They felt so good and soaked up a lot of chatter! Those hubs sure give your bike some zip! Killer riding dude!
Thanks man, carbon wheels with a warranty are the way to go, first time riding carbon wheels and they feel amazing and soak up a lot of harshness from the trail. Still lighter too even though I went with the heaviest, burliest rims.
Newb here. Are these trails considered medium or hard?
The trails in the first part of the video were all hard double black diamond trails, and in the second half the trails were blue and single black diamond medium difficulty trails.
@ thanks for reply!
Great riding! Are you filming with a chest mount or chin mount?
Thanks! Both actually, the gnarlier trails in Piedmont in the first part were filmed with a chin mount on my full face helmet, and the trails in Brewer Park in the second half were filmed with a chest mount.

@@valerie_gain It’s real lol, this is an easy green rated trail at Spirit Mountain too
🤙 Super clean riding Andrew! Love how quiet you've got 'er riding
@@rileygoesoutside Thanks Riley, its been a bit of work tracking down and fixing all those creaks on the bike that seem to appear after riding at Spirit Mountain! You were right about carbon wheels, they definitely have an amazing on trail ride feel!
Awesome job Rudy and Zenith Co. Very glad you’re impressed with new carbon wheels and convergence rims!! That’s a pretty awesome late season ride!! Lucky you!!
Thanks, I'm hoping to get one more weekend ride in Duluth near the end of November! I am very impressed with the Convergence rims, had been researching them for awhile and the timing was right after breaking yet another aluminum rim. Rudy has built a ton of fun features at Piedmont and Brewer Park! I did not ride the incredible new trail Zenith recently built in this video, but search "Spirit Mountain Dreamland" for some videos of it, it's incredible!
Which trek marlin did you have. As an amateur I'm very happy with my 6. Nice trails. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanks Harry, I had a 2014 Trek Marlin 6. That bike was a lot of fun, but I haven't ridden it in years because I destroyed the rear alloy wheel (go figure).
@@AndrewGehn sad. You know it's an easy fix right. I bought mine used I think it's an '17. I lose track. Still love it.
Amazing video, Andrew! Great editing. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can hear and see the difference when you’re riding your new carbon rims. I know you can feel the difference! Such a smoother and snappier ride! You’ll not regret buying them. I’ve had Reserve carbon rims and Cush Core on my Hightower, 3-years, and Megatower, 1-year, and have never flatted or had to true the rims, either. You’ll ride better and have even more confidence on the gnarliest of trails.
Thanks Randy, seeing your great experiences with you carbon Reserve wheels was definitely a factor in making the upgrade! After constantly damaging or having to true alloy wheels, it was time to make the upgrade to carbon rims that have a lifetime warranty. They feel and ride incredible on the trails, hopefully we can get one more ride in at Piedmont together!
Honestly IDK how you do any of this 🛹
Start small and lots of practice over time, just like skateboarding!

@ thanks! Lots of Duluths out there. Was hoping it was GA
That looks like a blast. Thanks for sharing this with us. We're those hikers about half way through?
Homebrew is always a great ride, especially now after the improvements. They were one the eastern section, kind of by the Superior Hiking Trail I think.
It was a great ride that day videoing each other doing Home Brew’s newest features! So fun to explore. The trail is top notch, thanks to Rudy! Looking forward to another Andrew/Randy ride before the end of the season.
That was a great ride with you that day, sessioning and filming all the new features Rudy built! Really hope we can get one more Piedmont ride this season!
Cool man! Rudy’s been a busy guy!
Can't believe how many features Rudy has built on Homebrew recently! The mini excavator was still parked up there last time too so he's probably still building!
Yeah it’s on my list for next year. I have a big list! 😁

okay I loved watching y’all loghopping u r mad
That loghopping attempt was the definition of madness
I think it does ride a little more flowy going N to S, but like 5%. It's very challenging in either direction. One other thing I learned the hard way is that the S trailhead has water but the N does not. So if you ride S to N you need enough water for the return trip back.
@@user-fg1bg3bb4j There are definitely fun and challenging parts either direction, but the majority of my favorite downhills are riding N to S. The S to N then back ride is one of the few rides I use my camelbak for that reason.
When I’m 66 i’ll guide you down our nursing home hallway to the cafeteria. Just be sure to keep up! Randy is rad!!!
@@Tkolbo_ Race you to the dessert table. Randy is inspirational, would love to be still riding double black diamonds on a regular bike then!

@@valerie_gain When Duluth rates a trail as a double black diamond, it certainly is! 🤙🏻
Great trail and great company! Seriously though, that’s a trail where I would love a beefier bike. So many hits!
@@robonbikes One of the best trails around and one of the gnarliest in Minnesota! Been riding it on the 130 mm Fuel a lot recently and it’s extra rowdy; 120 mm Tallboy would be even more so! Randy is sending it at 66!
Looks like fun my kinda trails
This is one of the best trails in Minnesota for downhill technical rock riding, can’t get enough of it!
@AndrewGehn Minnesota has trails like that badass , I'm in Missouri we have trails similar to that there a good time .
Duluth has the best terrain in the state and is like a slice of Squamish terrain. Howler Bike Park in MO is on my ride list!
@AndrewGehn on your way down to howler on 44 outside of st.louis stop off to chubb trail and zombie trail you'll like those as well .
@AndrewGehn ill have to add dulth to my list as well thank ya .

@@AndrewGehn still. I would have to try it at least once 😜
This makes me want to ride now! Looked like a fun day with a great crew!
@@Dialed1 Such a rad day, we all missed you and Sam! Winona has great terrain by Midwest standards, need to get back here in the spring! Know exactly how you feel watching your guys group ride at Lebanon Hills in the fall two years ago while I was off the bike recovering…heal up!
With the bike parks closed, I’m gonna have to check out that area 😂
It’s a really cool area, and there’s about the same amount of elevation as Spirit Mountain, just without the chairlift 🤣 Definitely want to ride here in the spring again to ride some longer descents before the bike parks up north open
That was such a fun day on the bike!! It’s always a good time riding with you and Evan! Killer video! Quarry looks rad! I can’t wait to hit it next spring! Glad you were able to use some of my footage in this! Let’s hit memorial and Winona next spring!
Always a great time riding with you and the others! Such a fun day exploring these new trails with the crew, Winona is the real deal! Really looking forward to yours and Evan’s videos on this day and riding with you again next spring!
Ok, that was cool. I lived in Winona over 20 years ago and I used to ride at bluffside park all the time. Obviously they have created a great trail system since then.
Winona has some amazing terrain to work with, rode here for the first time 4 years ago and knew there was potential. It’s a great trail system and I’m definitely planning on riding there again next year!
Dang this looked like a bangin’ day with a great crew - bummer I had to miss it 😢. These trails look so good, a steady mix of flow and rocks! Can’t wait to head down here next Spring! Great video!
Thanks Rob, wish that you, Jeremy, and Sam could’ve all made it, that would be an incredible day! Winona has some awesome terrain, good flow and technical singletrack, with descents around 450 feet which is similar to Spirit Mountain! I will definitely be back next spring, maybe we can ride there
The fall colors really add another element to these trail riding videos no extra editing required. Good stuff. I think Judge Judy is coming for you on that case! Lol! We all do it.
Haha you know it's a bad one when almost the entire saddle is in frame, that was actually my best attempt at that jump too trying to follow TKolbo...Fall is by far the best time of year to ride, always try to spend as much time as possible outdoors biking and hiking before winter.
Awesome day on the bike this was! Can't wait to see this place get even better!
Such a great day and great crew to ride new trails with, wish Jeremy and Sam could have been there...Winona has some awesome terrain, I'll definitely be back to ride early season and see what they continue to build. Looking forward to your edit on this day, you shot a ton of footage to work with!
La Crosse area native. Winona trails are great! Climbed Ope and Troll Scroll, then looped Chickadee, went down Troll scroll, back up Ope, did Wildwood trails, upper and lower connector and then descended Danger Noodle last Tuesday. I plan on coming back next year to try Horse Trail and Quarry. Too sketchy right now with the leaves. Same as you, I ride Red Wing, La Crosse, and recently Winona since they added the new trails.
Memorial Park in Red Wing used to be my local trails so I'm a huge fan of the driftless trails, glad to see Winona is building out the awesome terrain they have! I need to get back to La Crosse, it's been several years since I rode there and I really enjoyed the War Eagle trail. Quarry trail was a ton of fun, wish I had fresher legs for that awesome technical climb instead of attempting it at the very end of the ride, Winona has some elevation!
Sick trails and awesome riding, guys! Gotta love those fun, long days on the bike with buddies. The wet leaves look so sketchy!! That’s the only thing that always freaks me out when riding. I’ll ride absolutely anything else without even thinking about it, but wet leaves are my kryptonite! If I don’t have grip or can’t see what’s underneath the leaves, it’s tough to handle. I will put this system on my bucket list for next year.
Thanks Randy, great crew to ride new trails with! Winona was a ton of fun, their riding season opens much earlier than ours up north so I'd like to go back in the spring and get some early season downhill laps! The leaves added to the sketchiness, especially on Horse and Quarry trails that already had loose rock and roots everywhere!
Yep. Im going to say it. Rocks? I hate rocks. 30 secs in.
I'm guessing you aren't a geologist Harry? Flow trails are fun but I do enjoy the challenge of rocky terrain. Stay far away from Split Rock Wilds...
Dang that looked like an Autumn Wonderland! 🍁. Can’t wait to see a full-length video of this ride!
@@robonbikes It was peak fall colors down south that day, lucked out on the colors again! It was an awesome day riding new trails with everyone, Winona has great terrain in the river bluffs. Thanks, I’ll be back there in the spring since they open earlier than the Range, you need to ride here!
So much damn fun! That trail has some serious length to it too!
@@Tkolbo_ Yeah it does, was looking at some familiar trails to compare it to and it’s almost the exact same vertical as Smorgasbord at Spirit Mountain! Awesome day riding with everyone exploring these great new trails in the driftless river bluffs!
Cool trail! It looks a bit sketchy with all the leaf coverage.
Surprisingly the leaves weren’t bad at all!
@@Tkolbo_I suppose the leaves were dry and that helped with any sketchiness?
@@Randy_Johnson 100%. There were other trains that the leaves covered all the rocks and such…that was very sketchy lol
@@Randy_Johnson Winona has some really awesome terrain up in the River Bluffs! This trail has almost the same vertical descent as Smorgasbord at Spirit, took several minutes to complete a full pull descent! The leaves were dry and weren’t horrible on this trail, but there was definitely some sketchy moments on other trails this day!
