A Lighthouse Keeper's guided tours Episode Thirty Three, Great Ormes Head Lighthouse.
This was filmed in the early 1990's.
We've finally left Anglesey and are now heading along the North Wales coast to visit the Great Ormes Head Lighthouse at Llandudno.
This Lighthouse is located on a one way toll road.
Also, as it is now a B&B, it isn't open to visitors unless you stay there.
The lens was removed and is now located inside the visitors centre, which you have to visit first, as it is located off on a side road, before the lighthouse.

A Lighthouse Keeper's guided tours, Episode Thirty Two. Llanddwyn Island Lighthouses.
มุมมอง 40414 วันที่ผ่านมา
We are visiting the last Lighthouses on the Southern end of Anglesey, Llanddwyn Island. There are two Lighthouses Twr Bach and Twr Mawr. Bach means small and Mawr means big in Welsh. There isn't much to see I'm afraid as the big tower was just an empty shell, and rather sad inside. The Lighthouses are not open to the Public, and it is a pay car park to get near them. However, it is stunning sce...

Still on Anglesey, North West Wales and heading for Point Lynas Lighthouse. Before we get there, we do a slight detour to visit a unique ex Keepers grave near Amlwch. The headstone is a very tall stone Lighthouse. Then onto Point Lynas. I was a Keeper here from 1983 to 1987. This video was shot in the early 1990's. This is now onto Anglesey on the far North West coast of Wales. We visit South stack Lighthouse, which I was stationed at from 1980 to 1983. To reach the Lighthouse, you have to negotiate over 400 steps down, and a foot bridge to get onto the small Island that South Stack sits upon. So bear that in mind when visiting. It appears that Anglesey no longer seems to have a Tourist Information Centre...

    Yet another really interesting video. I just searched on the British Newspaper Archive and found in the Western Morning News and Daily Gazette, Saturday 3rd October 1936, a radio programme called 'In Passing' broadcast at 8.30pm has the following description 'The microphone will visit The Great Orme Lighthouse, Llandudno, and Richard Greaves caretaker, will be interviewed'. I wonder if that recording still exists somewhere?

      @PeterHalil 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you very much for that, sounds interesting. Somebody somewhere may have that stashed. It would be like looking for a needle in the proverbial haystack I guess. I often think of how little footage that seems to be out there on Keepers going up the winch on boat reliefs on the Bishop Rock, and yet every boat relief had tourist boats out watching it all with several people filming it. Lost in a box in the loft no doubt. Cheers and take care.

    Really interesting. So sad that the lighthouses lost their keepers. It is like the beating heart was taken out of them. Where I live in Canada we still have some staffed lighthouses. They did try and automate them all but the need to have human eyes and ears on the ground in very remote parts over-ruled that. So they survive today. I wonder where else there are staffed lighthouses?

    Thanks for yet another fine video, Peter. I believe the bell has by now been done away with and replaced by a modern foghorn. That's a shame.

      Hi Mark, welcome to my channel, glad you like my videos. I was in Florida early this year and visited a small amount of lighthouses. These will appear after I've completed this current run that I'm doing. They all had to be done hand held camera wise and as a normal tourist, but hopefully will turn out ok. Cheers and stay safe.

      @@MarkfromtheStates Great, I did a couple of longer ones that are mainly on a sort of documentary feel to them. life inside a lighthouse. A Lighthouse Keepers Story. 1994 is a nice one and the other one is The Needles Lighthouse at Christmas, they give a good all round look at our lives out to sea. Cheers stay safe and hopefully they will enjoy the videos.

    What did lighthouse keepers do during their day? Operation and maintenance? Did they have to keep watch or to be 'on call' or around in case something happened? I get the impression from these videos that they often worked in teams, was that the norm? Did they work shifts? Was flogging ever a thing? (joke) Did they spend a lot of time drunk or did they read / study? Was there a lighthouse keeper subculture? Were they always chatting on the radio, like truckers? It just seem like a fascinating, parallel reality from the past.

    • @PeterHalil
      @PeterHalil หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi,Most jobs were done before mid day. But when on watch there were engines etc to make sure were working ok. The olden day Keepers would have been doing loads more work. Brass to polish. When radios came into service there was a general chat for a short while when testing in the mornings. You listened in on the distress frequency plus somebody was on watch all the time 24/7 365 days of the year. Cheers and take care

    Hi Peter, another great video from you sir. One that has turned out to be really important now she has suffered an arson attack in Feb 2024. I am very fortunate to broadcast from Radio Mi Amigo which has it's studios on-board the LV18. Inside her accommodation it is now in a sorry state due to the arson attack especially at the aft end as much of it is now gone. She is a great ship and hopefully she will eventually be repaired. 🇮🇲🇮🇲

      That is a shock to hear. What a complete A**hole to have done that to such a majestic lady, unbelievable. That was also news to me that not only was Radio Mi Amigo still going but that she was onboard LV 18. Donkeys years ago now I used to listen to Caroline and others whilst growing up nin East Anglia. I wish you well and I hope you all get back up and running soon. Take care and stay safe. Thanks again.
