Sailing with Sharks and 50 knot Winds: Scotland's Serene and Savage Coast.
We are in what can only be described as one of the most beautiful destinations we've ever sailed to. Anchored in this remote bay nestled between 2 small islands in the Outer Hebrides, we explore the island's rugged coastline and cascading waterfalls.
From here we continue on our Scottish sailing journey, and head a little south to the Island of Taransay where we experience some strong winds and encounter the rare sighting of several basking sharks.

    Love the 'real world sailing'. You're not teaching what's written in textbooks, but what works out in the real world. It's important to differentiate between knowledge and experience. Both of which you both seem to share based on this video! Can't wait to see more! Soon to have my own boat out of Troon in the coming weeks. Cannot wait!!

      Thanks for taking the time to leave your nice comment, if we can inspire just one person to leave the dock to explore it’s worth our effort. Good luck with buying the new boat. We hope you get out sailing soon and keep learning as you go. We try to continue learning new ways to do things, as the more ways you know, the more informed your decision becomes. You also have more options if you need to adapt to a situation or things go wrong.

    Great video! I hace some tips to consider. We manufacture for Vetus the fuel filter water separator that you have in your vessel. -never share same inlet line for the engine fuel system and the polishing system.. if there is a problem in that line both systems are useless. -the inline for the polishing filter take it from the drain valve of the tank and install a 3 way valve there. In this way you take the water that sits at the bottom of the tank daily and drain it from the Racor filter. That black mud in the tank is a fungus and it grows in the layer between the water and the Diesel. Taking out the water daily , prevents the growth of the fungus.(Cladosporium resinae) - put a bigger "Racor" filter for polishing like a 900fh . Bigger filtration surface and bigger see thru bowl for collecting water and more internal flow. - the dual Vetus always use one in service and the other in stand by mode full of fuel in case of emergency just open its valves. In every filter change alternate the filter use. (The new one stays in stand-by mode). Change filters every 300hrs or once a year aprox...what comes first. -drain daily, or look for water mostly in the polishing filter.

    Good video. Thank you. My friend's boat needs a couple of blocks added close to the mast for her reef lines. This is really helpful. I've not had very good luck using mold release. A good trick if you're using something like that bolt as a mold: Wrap it in two layers of Teflon plumbing tape. One layer the epoxy might get through and it sticks. Two layers has always worked for me. But it means the threaded hole is oversized. So maybe use a smaller bolt as a mold and then tap the hole. Keying: that's a bit what you're doing with the small grinder. Usually people use 100 grit sandpaper to 'key' a surface for epoxy. If it's hardware and not a hull or deck or something that has to look great, I use really rough sandpaper, 20 or 40 grit. And of course you don't want to wait too long after the first epoxy to soak into the balsa and the final thickened epoxy. Otherwise it might not stick. Good job. I'll share this with my friend and we'll fix her reef blocks.

    Was watching you from ashore yesterday - what was that manouevre you were up to with the anchor before finally dropping it? - just curious! - Martin

    • @SailingHiraeth
      @SailingHiraeth หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there Martin. We're still here, so say hello if you see us. The wind was only very light at the time we anchored, but the forecast was for it increase to around 30kts over night. So, we set the anchor in the opposing direction to that predicted wind not the then current wind direction. Unfortunately the first time we dropped it, we were not able to let enough chain out without potentially hitting a dubiously place buoy in the middle of the allocated anchorage (the little red one). That's why we pulled anchor, circled around to re-test the depth 50m to the west and re-set the hook there. Without any danger of hitting any of the mooring buoys if we swung around. This might seem like some faff. But, I'm inherently lazy and I don't enjoy getting out of bed at 0300 to move an anchor because I couldn't be bothered scoping It out properly first time.

    I notice that You haven't let the main sheet out so far that the boom is almost touching the shrouds. Most cruisers do it like this, which in my opinion raises the risk of an accidental gybe. If the main boom is let out as far as it can go there's much more wiggle room in degrees before the top of the sail catches the wind from the wrong side (that initiaties the accidental gybe). Almost every sailboats with original sheets I've been on have had too short main sheets so it's not possible to let the main out far enough. Edit: I noticed You're talking about chafe on the sheet, are You worried about chafe on the mainsail if it's touching the shrouds?

    • @SailingHiraeth
      @SailingHiraeth หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there. We don't have aft lower or intermediate shrouds and the spreaders are not swept back at all, so it may look as though the boom is not the far out. But, in the video the boom is out at around 100 degrees and the mainsail is touching up against the spreaders. I don't know if it shows but we have chafe patches on the mainsail at the height of both sets of spreaders in locations for full sail and 1 & 2 reefs in. I agree with you in regards to the potential danger of not letting the mainsheet out enough to get the boom out as far as is possible to reduce that risk of the sail back winding. I do think that using a preventer is FAR more important than eeking an extra few degrees of boom angle.
