Sailing to a Soviet Ghost Town: Ep 8

In the last episode, we sailed up to 80 degrees of latitude and got to see Polar bears.
Now, as we leave the north of Svalbard, we head back into Isfjorden to visit the Russian ghost-mining town of Pyramiden.
On the way, we meet a herd of Atlantic Arctic Walrus and encounter two groups of Beluga whales. One of these has well over 100 animals in the pod.
Eventually, we make our way back to Longyearbyen to get the boat and ourselves ready to continue sailing on what may be a surprisingly long passage back south.

The whole thing is utterly bonkers……the deserted mining town, the scale of it, the lights still working in the cinema, swimming pool and gymnasium……..even the reindeer with their antlers look completely mad…….and as for the fox quietly having a snack……And through it all, Miles’ deadpan commentary, Sally casually strolling with a rifle slung over her shoulder and the beautiful Beluga whales serene, oblivious, timeless………So typically kind and thoughtful of you to recognise your own good fortune in being able to get there on Hiraeth, not to crow but point us in the direction of how we might share in the same experience. Oh, and the sound track was just perfect……..

Amazing to see how wildlife can bounce back after decades or even centuries of humans killing/hunting/exploiting/habitat destroying if they are just left alone.
Gives you a bit of hope for the future.
