  • In this episode, we leave Loch Sunart in the rain and make our way up to Loch Moidart where we negotiate a tricky tidal bar and show you how we use Antares chart to help make navigating into anchorages a lot safer.
    After checking out Castle Tioram and a night on anchor we continue sailing up to Mallaig and spot a pod of dolphins and several minke whales on the way.
    If you are interested in the Antares charts we use in the video check them out here: www.antarescharts.co.uk/

    Antares are fantastic for the West Coast giving great detail in those anchorages.

    Nice video guys. Fabulous anchorage and good to see the Antares charts in action as we’ve heard of them but never seen them. Will definitely be downloading those when we get to Scotland. Great info…thank you 😊⛵️

    Bliss! A great reminder of seasons past and hope for the present one. So lovely to have you back in Stravaiger’s saloon (and you can guess who sat up when she heard your voices…….). I couldn’t agree more about Antares charts - indispensable. I can’t say the same about Miles’ recipe for porridge!

    Those charts look very useful, great work by the guys who produce them.
    Was wondering if the right to roam applies to the islands etc around Scotland or are some private?, I know access rights are different in Scotland than in England in the main.

    For an further navigational aid to the West Coast of Scotland I recommend The Clyde Cruising Club handbook. Sailing Instuctions to The West Coast of Scotland. It is an excellent pilot book updated annually. I used it before GPS, AIS, Plotters or Radar were used on yachts. Good video, I hope you enjoyed my home waters 😀.

    Great video, by my books that's a nutritional breakfast, banana for potassium and enriched with nut butter . . . perhaps go easy on the sugary stuff though ;-) (I always add the nutella before cooking the porridge as it then mixes in sooo easily).
    We are currently choosing a new anchor. The Spade S100 is currently top of our short list. Which size Spade do you have? How are you getting on with it?

      Hi there.
      Glad you enjoyed the video.
      Sometimes food on the boat is based on a neuroscientific strategy to increase serotonin for cognitive function, and to raise dopamine levels.
      OR
      Anything that keeps the crew awake and happy is all good!!
      Our anchor is the Spade S160. We really like it.
      We have a pretty strict anchoring protocol and have (so, far) never dragged anchor at all.
      My thoughts on sizing are...
      Go at least 1 size up from recommended.
      Anchor weight (especially the tip) digs the anchor in. Anchor fluke surface area is what keeps you there.
      Don't not buy the anchor you want because it won't fit on the bow roller. Make it fit.
      5kg in extra anchor weight is only the same as adding about 2m of 10mm anchor chain.
      Nobody ever lay awake in 45kts of wind thinking "I wish I had bought the cheaper anchor".
      Hope this helps.

    What is the story with midges up there then? I have seen people wearing full nets?

    • @SailingHiraeth
      @SailingHiraeth  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, the midges can certainly be an issue in some places on land. Though we've never had a problem with them on the boat.

    Antares verse Navionics. Careful there lad. You showed a view of a non subscription to navionics. Not exactly a great comparison. For those that want to or have navionics, don’t panic - great detail and then some of west coast of Scotland. Personally, I’d be using Navionics every day as far more options.

    • @SailingHiraeth
      @SailingHiraeth  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I think you may be missing the point of what's trying to be made here.
      The Antares charts are an extra aid to navigation in areas that have not necessarily been sounded recently or with a lot of detail.
      We do use Navionics charts on the chartplotter for most of our navigation.
      Antares charts are ONLY pilotage charts for anchorages.
      The detail at the scales shown, are the view you will see on both sets of charts (irrespective of the subscription you have with Navionics).
