Woodturning Basics - How to Turn a Walnut Coffee Scoop with a Simple Custom Jig
Woodturning basics today as we demonstrate how to wood turn a multi-axis one piece solid wooden coffee scoop. The lathe created wood scoop must be turned in two different orientations so we also show you how we made the custom jig while safely removing the scoop's opening. This scoop was turned from hickory and walnut scraps.

    Hello, I really like your videos, I have learned a lot from them, unfortunately I haven't worked with the lathe for a couple of years due to a heart attack I had and I left it for a while. After that I have been trying to do it again, but the only thing I completely forgot is how to use the Digital Caliper to make the exact cuts to size, I have searched all over TH-cam to see if there is a related video on how to make the exact cuts. san stop for segments, but even if I don't exist, I would greatly appreciate your help if you know of any tutorial that explains it in detail, to be able to make the cuts perfectly again since my cuts are not square. I will be very grateful, your friend and follower Enrique

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am not aware of any tutorials using digital calipers to make the segments. Best thing to do is to create some kind of a jig so you have more control over each cut. Another workaround when gluing up the rings is to just glue halves of the ring and then use either a drum sander or jig on the table saw to cut the edges square. That way when going the ring halves together, you’ll have a perfect match

    Question about drilling the hole for the tool shaft. I bought the same carbide tool shaft you used in the video. The rounded shaft end is 15/32 by a hair under 2”. Do I drill a 1/2 hole to ‘make room’ for the epoxy?

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, for a 15/32 shaft you would want to drill a 1/2 inch hole. Epoxy is a bit stronger when it has more “room“ in the joint. I also roughed up the end of the shaft a bit with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. That will allow the epoxy a little extra bite on the metal. Good luck and thanks for watching. Michael.

      Dennis, I didn't have any plans to follow. I just started with how large I wanted the opening to be and worked to the back where the 4" hose was attached. I'm kind of curious as to why you leave that much tailstock in the bowl, I'd assume it wouldn't add much extra support as soon as you reach the thinnest point of it, for example, let's say the tailstock as a curved cone shape, and at the thinnest point of the cone, it's 2 inches in diameter, then wouldn't leaving more than an inch or 2 past the 2 inches in diameter give virtually no extra support? I'd love to hear the explanation, as I'm sure it'd help me get even better myself, and just for clarification what I stated as an example is in no way, shape or form a fact, just my assumption, that I'd love to be corrected on if it's wrong, I love learning new things and improving on myself and my own knowledge, thank you in advance. I love woodturning and I'm fairly new to it, been woodturning for about 2 years but kind of took a long break recently due to the cold weather making it almost unbearable to be in the barn during this winter.

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really didn't need to leave that much of the center "tailstock" portion inside the bowl. This was green turned and if I remember I was just curious how much that piece might warp as the bowl dried out. Really nothing more than that! Appreciate the question and happy turnings.

Step 2: Capture a unicorn to assist with core selection - their expertise in magical spheres is unparalleled. Step 3: Seek out the most elusive dragon for coverstock selection; they hoard the rarest and most potent bowling ball materials. Step 4: Convince a wizard to drill the perfect holes using their mystical precision. Step 5: Merge all components under a full moon while chanting ancient bowling alley incantations. Step 6: Dip the ball in liquid stardust for the ultimate finishing touch. Step 7: Test it out by challenging a genie to a bowling match - their cosmic insights will determine if your ball is truly custom made! Remember, the more fantastical the process, the more legendary your custom bowling ball will be! Great, Best, Today: Michael

    The light blue pearl to walnut color combo provides great contrast. In lighter woods i find deep blue, purple, and reds excels.

      Agreed! I had mixed six different test combinations to find a color that I like best. I debated going with a more royal blue, but ended up choosing aqua. Definitely want to try more of a red color next time. Cheers, Michael
