Woodturning a Knotty Red Pine Vase

  • Wood turning this simple Red Pine vase from start to finish was a two year project. Being the first time (and possibly last time) turning pine, I didn't know what to expect. This project started out with a freshly cut section of red pine and was initially turned green (wet) to it's rough size and shape. The soft pine wood texture was more challenging to turn then your typical hardwood, even when turning green! I put the roughed out vase aside to dry and didn't get back to it for almost two years and actually finished it on my new Harvey lathe. The softer pine really didn't sand very well. I think there was inconsistency with how hard the wood was between the annual growth rings that made it difficult to get a smooth surface. For the finish, I opted out of any kind of sanding sealer and was okay with the yellowish finish knowing where this vase would find its final home. Comments? Questions?
