DLC Finished Tei3 Newport (My Favorite Putter Yet!)
Here is a new one! My new personal favorite gamer! This one I sent out for a DLC finish and it turned out AMAZING!
Unfortunately I won't be able to offer this finish quite yet for any restores, but hopefully soon. In the meantime, I will be experimenting with new finishes for Tei3s! Something more along the classic Black Oxide look, but with more durability!!
Reach out with ANY questions!

What grit was your grinding wheel to get that clean of a finish ?
Was probably 180-240 grit. My most commonly used.
Another great video! What size bit and type did you use with your drill press? Thank you!
It was a plunge cutting end mill. And was in my mill, not a standard drill press. Keeps the hole true and perfectly straight. It was a 3/8 bit as that was the size of the stainless tubing.
So I have the same putter. I removed the black finish and I’m wondering (I’m a noob) if what’s left is the bare carbon steel? Or is there some other plating left under the black finish? Thanks
I believe it's bare carbon steel. Not 100% but I believe it is.
Is the tp mills chrome plated or is it just the black finish?
I'm not even sure what the finish was because it was flaking. Couldn't have been a black oxide. Wasn't chrome as it was black. 🤷♂️
Love the final result. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get the chromatic bronze finish?
This putter was finished in a satin bead blast. Not bronzed.
Looks great! Is this putter face balanced?
It is!
Perfect recipe to ruin a vintage Ping putter and wipe its value.
Definitely didn't hurt it's $25-$30 value. 🤷♂️
@@igolf906 Whatever the value, this is tasteless.
@@florianpilonTo who, you? According to everyone else in the comment section, they think otherwise.
What's in the bath? Hydrochloric acid?
Acetone
Hi, What kind of paint and paint tools do you use to finish the putters? Been digging the videos!
For the paintfill, check my video description for all of my tools and equipment. Everything is listed there!
Is there a trick to ensuring that the putter face is perfectly flat, so that the ball rolls true?
Its sanded on a granite slab. The granite slab is as close to perfectly flat as you can get other than a mill.
I love your work. If it's stainless steel , Can it turn blue or purple ?
It can get a slight shade of blue and purple yes. Not as prevalent as carbon steel though.
What a nice job. Would you consider doing a restoration on another putter for a reasonable rate?
Shoot me an email.
Aside from tiger having red paintfill everywhere no black it’s bang on
This one was requested that way, but yes you're right!
awesome video
Thank you!
Check out my updated video on restoring! I go into much more detail. th-cam.com/video/1_e-j95K6yg/w-d-xo.html
Hi, it was an another great video to watch on your channel. Thank you so much! I have some questions to ask regarding air compressor. What was your psi during the insert sand blasting? Can we use air compressor that is under 7CFM for sand blasting for glass beads? Lastly, do you have any plans for sand blasting Ping brass copper putters by any chance?
For finish blasting, it's glass bead. And I spray between 60 & 80 psi depending on the application. And I've done a few brass heads before with a satin bead blast yes. As far as cfm, anything will work. Just depends on how patient you are between the compressor running. Mine is an 80 gallon at 16cfm at 90psi so I can get a good amount blasted before it kicks on.
@ Awesome!! I will be looking forward to watch your future videos. Once again, thank you so much for your informations!
nice one. You only sand blast to remove rust? You wouldn't use muriatic / hydrochloric acid on the old tei3's? cheers
Just wanted to say your videos got me inspired to try restoring putters. Everything just got delivered today and I can't wait to see how badly I mess up my first putter! I dont think I can mess it up with your videos teaching me the way though
You cleaning the workbench was very satisfying, oh and the putter looks sick!
Thank you!
Great putter! minimum sand blast before DLC ? How will the DLC hold up on carbon steel with it being a "softer steel" Cheers
It was bead blasted prior to DLC. And so far from what I see, this is one of the most durable finishes I've ever seen. I'm very careful with my putters, but I'm really curious to see what it will look like in a year or so.
What would be the alternative to sandblasting? Assume elbow grease & hand sanding?
Are you talking the prep before cerakoting? Then no, there is no alternative. Cerakote has pretty extensive prepping steps, and sandblasting is a must.
@ great, thanks.
Great work. What did you use to fill the gap on the face insert?
Just a standard white tub and tile caulk. Don't let Scotty fool you, that's what he used too 😆
@igolf906 thanks. I've done a couple of putters. Your videos helped a lot, thanks. Any tips on removing the inserts on ping or odyssey putters?
Who do you use for the DLC finish? I've looked but all the places I've called have a min $150 order
A friend of a friend..not really doing orders but hopefully in the future. And yes, that price is about standard anywhere that offers it. From the brief bit I've seen, the machines used to apply these finishes can run between. $50k and a $1mil so. It's understandable
@igolf906 thanks for the help! Keep me posted if he starts doing orders
as always another beautiful job, big fan of the work! I was the guy who sent pics of the studio stainless, I've been wanting to do one of these for awhile, what did you use to put the insert back in? polymer/caulck? keep up the good work bud!
Just standard tub & tile caulk.
it came out great man! i had a question. when you typically use testors paint do you use any of their thinner at all? have been watching your videos and you encouraged me to pick up a old newport to work on. thanks again!
No thinner. When the paint gets cold it will thicken up so, if you're in a colder environment, I recommend hitting the paint jars with a heat gun for a minute. It really helps it thin out.
Putter looks awesome! I have a Tei3 and I've wanted to redo all the holes on the back cavity. After you fill it with the polymer what did you put over the top of them? It looked like white paint but wasn't 100% sure. As always love your videos!!!
Depending on the silicone I use. I like to fill the dots with a drop of paintfill. Makes them pop a little more and looks really clean.
Looks great! I played one of these with the regular length neck for 25 years or so. What is a "DLC" finish? Never heard of that.
It's called Diamond Like Coating. It's super durable and to me looks like a perfect gloss black oxide finish. But won't oxidized like black oxide unless you really wear it down or damage the coating somehow. It's legit beautiful 😍
@@igolf906 it looks beautiful. I'm sure the camera doesn't do it justice.
This one available for sale? Very interested if so
Never say never. But as of now, this one is my new personal gamer. I have about 8 rounds on it and absolutely love it! I may do a few more in the future.
@@igolf906 sounds like I need to find one to send to you to make just like this then lol
@stewboyslabs1578 I can't offer this finish yet so. Will have to be a different finish.
Do you put a drop of water in the dots before the paint? Epic video man you do great work
Nope it's mineral spirits. If you get a nice thin film of it, it makes the paint flow much better
@@igolf906 You are the man. Last question, when you are sand blasting is there one grade that you use mostly or do you go between the two grades often?
That putter was just fine the way it was. People screw things up in the name of restoration. Put on a new grip and you get another forty years of service with no grinding or painting.
Your opinion 🤷♂️
Looks so much better without paintfill
How did you get that color with the torch? I am trying to do this to my newport. I want to know exactly how to get this color if possible! Thanks and great work.
Simply torch it until you get the color you want. I use a Mapp gas torch and it takes awhile to turn. Longer you torch, the darker it gets, then will start turning slightly blue.
Binge watched your Rossie vids. If I don't want to do a full restoration & only wanted to sand the face to make it usable again as part of a budget beginner set, do I have to treat the face with clear coat spray or some other chemical so moisture doesn't compromise the metal or black insert on the dual force version?
You can just sand it smooth. No coating necessary. Make sure however you're doing it that it's perfectly flat. For hand sand smooth faces, I use a block of granite and sand paper.
So to touch up a black putter mask sand and spray paint i assume..?
Spray paint won't last. For a black finish on stainless steel, Cerakote is your best option.
@@igolf906 Thanks I bought a brand new putter, and it was on sale, but only the black was available. so, I bought it but I know those get scratched. It says it is a milled soft putter.
@@igolf906 Thanks, I bought a new milled putter, and it was on sale. Only black remained. I know those get scratched easily.
Now that is impressive. My grandpa owned the AC-108s. Now I own them. I don't suppose you want to restore another set of AC-108s?
Unfortunately, I'm not really set up to do irons efficiently for people. But if you can, send some pics I'd love to assess them and take a look.
Homie used enough silicone for an entire bathroom. Turned out great for how bad it actually was. It always shocks me when I see one in such poor condition. I’m crazy with my putters. The only time they aren’t in their cover is on the putting green, and I always keep my clubs inside the house
Just Beautiful. What media do you use to sandblast this? 180 grit glass?
240 grit glass. Links in the description.
If you were to torch a brand new Scotty, would you need to remove any factory finish with sand blasting?
No. But you would need to remove any weights, sole plates, and paintfill. You need to be 100% certain also that the putter is clean from all oils and debris. Otherwise, the finish will not be uniform.
Thanks for another great video....what paint manufacture do you use? And which applicator do like the best? Thanks!
For paintfill, I use Tamiya mainly. Testors I also use for odd colors. I order custom applicators from Gaunt Industries. All different bottle and tip sizes.
What type of wheel/stone is that?
Check any of my newer video descriptions. All of my tools and materials are listed there.
What grinding/sanding wheel it that? Looks like it takes down the highs and lows but doesn't gouge the metal too much?
Check any of my newer video descriptions. All of my tools and materials are listed there.
I just happened to have ordered this exact putter from Callaway Preowned. I expect it'll need some level of refinishing. I wish I had your skills.
Could you fix my Scotty Cameron Putter? If so, How much would you charge? Thanks, Tim
Shoot me an email
This club is highly illegal as it can be used by both a right hand and as a left onset stroke. I have alerted the authorities so it cannot and must not be used in competition!
🧐
How long do you bake and at what temp after the cerakote? Thanks!
250 for 2 hours.
Hownany degrees to hang ?
Are talking about toe hang? If so, I don't remember what it came out to. Standard plumbers neck probably similar to Newport
@@igolf906 yes was talking about the toe hang. I play a Edel putter with 35 degree upright toe hang, this to correct the twisting off the blade during swinging the putter, this way the blade comes more straith true the ball at impact, just like Honu putters. Wonder if this is possible when making a butter by myself.
Can u do 1 custom for me ??
Shoot me an email
I’m considering purchasing a used laguna select. What would it cost to send it to you for a similar restoration to include face milling?
Responded to your email!
How would you clean up the backside if the wheel didn't fit? Thinking like the smaller areas like on an answer style, along the sight line and in some of those corners
By hand with sand paper if it's bad. MOST cavities are decently clean so, usually don't need much work. I don't recommend usually a dremel.
will this work w chrome plated irons? i have Wilson FG Tour 100s that I want to re-finish, thanks and great job
No, if you're restoring anything with plating, it needs to be professionally stripped. Otherwise, it will be a mess, and the finish will be splotchy at best. And it would definitely need to be replated.
@@igolf906 :/ thanks for the quick reply and bad news lol. I was afraid of that though. what about Cerakoting irons? hmmm sounds cool, but would it hold up? Cerakote is a durable ceramic paint basically right? great job on the putter!
How long do you let paint dry befor wiping away excess with acetone?
An hour is usually fine.
